Grumpys Boston Cream
300317. The label on the bottle states that this is an American Pale Ale. Poured from the bottle with a big gush of beige coloured foam that filled the glass and it took three attempts to pour the beer before I emptied the bottle. The foam eventually settled to leave a hazy dark amber beer that smelt sweet and malty. In the mouth the beer is very lively and there are traces of vanilla, toffee and caramel in the flavour. Purchased on line from Boozebud.

Grumpys Buzz Beer
111612. Bottle from Boozebud. I found this beer to be a bit too sweet for me with an overdose of honey. Everything about this beer reeked of sweetness. Quite thin in the mouth and it had a strange pink tinged colour to it that I wasn’t expecting.

Grumpys Boston Cream
Gold, slightly hazy pour with a ridiculously massive white head. After it eventually settles down there’s malty, spicy aromas but a weird lagery cardboard underneath. Massive fizz, malt and honey but really not a lot of hops to it. Bit of an underlying nasty aftertaste as well - don’t love it at all.

Grumpys Boston Cream
330mL bottle from Booze Bud. Hazy honey gold body, pours a rather excitable white foam. Nose doesn’t give away too much - light toasty malt, subtle woody spicy savoury hop (Northern Brewer?). Full body, somewhat lifted carbonation, bit of chewy malt texture there. Honeyed malts on the body, slightly toasty, savoury hops, touch of dough & minerals on a reasonably mild finish. Would say this hits the brief of being a cream ale - nothing exciting, but pleasant enough.

Grumpys Auld Fokker Altbier
This is a very old rating that I never got to put in and will have to redo. Aroma: socks, apperance: couldy brown, flavour: mainly bland with a touch of bitterness giving way to a nasty aftertaste.

Grumpys Honey Wheat
Pale dull looking almost yellow body with a short head. Honey is in there but it is not doing much for me. Floury and floral aroma and not alot of wheat characters in the taste.

Grumpys Genuine Pale Ale
Slightly cloudy orange gold, with a medium sized head that didn’t last. Dusty aroma with some fruity hops with light raspberry notes as well. Good flavour, with some well balanced bitterness. A light to medium body, and a fine refreshing carbonation that seems just about right. A good solid beer. (tap at brew-pub)

Grumpys Goldrush California Steam Beer
Slightly cloudy amber with a generous head. A very hoppy aroma, reminds me of Goldings hops a bit. Well balanced bitter flavour, with a medium bodied and lasting palate. Well carbonated making this an easy drinking beer that had some good depth. Maybe a little on the bitter side, but that’s better than not enough! (tap at brew-pub)

Cloudy copper brown, with a bit of a head that didn’t really last. The aroma is a robust sweet caramel with a hint of banana. However, the flavour was quite bland, with just a little bitterness that distinguishes it from water. It’s also a bit flat, with a light to medium body. It’s an inoffensive but uninteresting beer. Grumpys Heysen Scottish Oatmeal Stout
Black, poor head. All the requisite chocolate and coffee character without any roastiness or bitterness. On the sweet end of the spectrum but not overly so. A bit too "smooth" for my liking and not real and rough enough. Quite oily. Not bad, but not to my taste.

Grumpys Triple A
Dark amber, clear, OK head. Massively fruity aroma just as described on the tasting notes. Tinned tropical fruit, lychees and American hops. The flavour is also dominated by the fruit character though it still manages to taste quite good. Little malt or hop character really. It’s incredible that a beer with such rampantly dominant ester character can still taste good, but it manages quite well. A very distinctive (bordering on the bizarre) brew.

Grumpys Biggles Best Bitter
Copper, clear, OK head. Aroma is a bit mild but is skewed towards malt - caramel and toast and what I would describe as "typical Maris Otter aroma". Not really any fruit or hop aroma. A nice malt flavour dominates with somewhat restrained hop character though the beer could certainly not be described as sweet. Slight fruit emerges as it warms. Very nice, though not to the standard of the real deal in England. I wonder how much it has to do with correct serving method...

Grumpys Honey Wheat
Pale, clear, OK head. Fruity lime character vaguely like a Riesling (presumably from the honey) which is dominant yet subtle at the same time and never over the top. Light wheaty flavour - very fresh with a slight fruity tartness. No hop character, but well-balanced. Light and dry and very refreshing, even on a freezing cold July day in the hills. Very nice with a very distinctive flavour. It probably deserves a higher rating for overcoming the limitations of the style but it just doesn’t have enough guts to get a real high score.

Grumpys Tom Cat Lager
I gotta say I was really fired up to drink a commercial CAP, firstly because I’d never done so but mostly to see if my own attempts are on the right track (I think they are). It’s quite pale with light haze and OK head retention. There’s a slightly sweet, grainy corn aroma which I quite like, with some mild grassy herbal hop (thyme or rosemary I think.) It’s neither as malty or bitter as I was expecting, though it definitely would have a far lower OG than my own attempts. There’s some light peachy malt which becomes more prevalent as it warms and faint bitterness without much hop character. There’s also some kind of furry roughness. It’s nice stuff, and certainly well-brewed but it just didn’t have as much guts as I would have liked. And on a pedantic note I think this would technically be classed as a post-prohibition CAP on account of the relatively low alcohol content. NB. Poor English in the commercial description comes from the brewery, not me. I left it un-edited (not sure why.)
