3.1 Heavyweight Perkunos Hammer Imperial Porter A 2005 trade from Dorwart, finally opened. Some raisin and plum in the nose, a bit of oxidized sherry, but nothing I wouldn't expect of a 17 year old beer that's been through 2 moves. The look in the glass is a bit thin. Not much on bubbles, just a few of them along the edge. Taste is pretty dry, but still a bit of plum brandy, slight sour cherry. Some sludge in the bottom that I'll decant out in a bit. Resolves to a dry red wine note. The only thing I'm disappointed in is my holding on to these vintage beers, and should go through more of them while I still can. Saturday, June 18, 2022

4.4 Heavyweight Ivy League Pils From Aug 2006 Poured from 750ml a reddish-gold with a medium sized head of foam that shrinks slowly but remains as a solid ~1" layer and dang this brew loves to hug the glass. ;^) The smell is quite strong of freshly baked biscuits and a bit of spice, wow. This one may be the best Pilsner for the nose that I've ever experienced. The taste is big! The biscuits in the smell transfer quite nicely into the flavour followed closely by a heaping helping of hop bitterness that makes my mouth pucker but...in a darned good way. Oh, and there's some warming from the 7.3%abv but it's on the subtle side so the drinkability factor suffers not. Bottom line: IMHO, this is a magnificent sample of the style, easily the best I've had. Go to the store and see if you can find it. Then...buy a bunch! Many thanks to my good bud Nutbrown for including this in our trade! Tuesday, October 17, 2017

3.5 Heavyweight Saison de la Soeur Black An old bottle shared by Todd tonight at the Christmas party, thanks for the opportunity! Foamed over as he opened it. Murky dark amber color with a good sized bubbly off white head. Aromas of raisins and sherry with a touch of cardboard. Light brown sugary malt backbone, light earthy yeasty flavors. Fared better than I would have expected given its age. Saturday, December 13, 2014

4 Heavyweight Wee Whale Rated on 02-23-2013 at RBWG (Bottle courtesy of SpringsLicker) The appearance is a small tan head with a long retention, opaque brown body, and spotty amounts of lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, dark fruits and some alcohol. The flavor mimics the aroma along with some semi-sweetness. This beer’s mouthfeel is smooth and this beer is medium bodied. A most quaffable beer with a good malt flavor. This beer is worth trying and a beer I would definitely drink again. Saturday, December 6, 2014

2 Heavyweight Stickenjab Alt Bier Bottle @ The WWGT2D? Tasting. I hope travlr doesn’t rate this. Amber with a small head. The nose is oxidized, as you’d expect. SOme sherry and rotting cherry. Cardboard sprinkled with cocoa powder. The taste is a great advertisement for the benefits of cellaring. Nasty cardboard. Mildly soured cherries. Bear claw donut. Light body, soft carbonation. 3 Heavyweight Browne Mild Notes from 2005. +++ Sampled on cask at Sharp Edge Beer Emporium this beer poured a very dark brown color with a medium sized tan head that left a bit of lacing. 3.7 Heavyweight Saison de la Soeur Black 2005 bottle thanks to Steve for sharing this rare one. Opaque dark brown pour with a huge foamy head that fades to a big ring Cool appearance. Aromas are raisins, licorice, light sour fruit, light roast and hard candy. Big raisin and dark, dried fruit taste with cherry syrup and licorice. It’s turned a bit syrupy over the years but you can tell this was a really good beer at one time. A cool one to try. This obviously aged way better than the hoppy version. 1.8 Heavyweight Saison de la Soeur Hoppy 2005 bottle, thanks to Steve for sharing. Pours cloudy yellow-orange with lots of brown sediment floating even from an early pour from the bottle. Aromas are butter, paper, and sour lemon. Tastes pretty much the same. Very cool to try this extrinct beer but it’s safe to say the 9 years hasn’t treated this well. Wednesday, March 12, 2014

2 Heavyweight Saison de la Soeur Black [Bottle / 2005] Thanks to Sean for the chance to try this rare old brew! Black pour, no wonder it’s called "Black". Some dark brown/ruby at the edges, topped with a quite active, chunky, & foamy light-tan head for being so old. Aroma is strange... dry grains, rye, charred toast, bready yeast, cotton, old cobweb-ridden cellar floor funk, & some light oxidation. I don’t love it, but it’s already better than the "Hoppy" version of this beer. Taste has a very slight date/raisin tartness, sweet prunes, some anise, cotton, mild cardboard-y oxidation, with a little funky wood in the finish. Kind of bland overall, but not quite the trainwreck that the "Hoppy" version is at this point. Pretty "meh" overall, but glad to try this one nonetheless. Sunday, March 2, 2014

0.9 Heavyweight Saison de la Soeur Hoppy [Bottle / 2005] Thanks to Steve for the chance to try this extinct ghost. Murky, brown-ish orange pour with a little, gray film & collar on top. Not bad for almost 9 years of age. The aroma, though... Wow. Oxidation has certainly had it’s way with this beer. Stale cardboard, mildew, with notes of lemon, faint smoke... & not much else. I swear I was getting small notes of gummy worms, though. Taste, unfortunately, also lost to oxidation. Cardboard, burnt booziness... Wet, stale wood, some mild yeast & Belgian ester-y fruit... Rotten. Swallowed by oxidation. Clumpy mouth feel. Fun to be able to try this, but it was pretty gross, actually. Couldn’t finish it. Sunday, March 2, 2014

3.5 Heavyweight Barrel Aged Old Salty Bottle shared at Dan’s Birthday Tasting (Lyons, IL). Pours a well hazed murky brownish amber pour, murky and dark with a frothy tannish head that dies to a decent film, laces ok. Aromas show oak, vinous qualities, some vanilla and spirit. Firmer oxidation, toffee and toast. Some caramel, and biscuits, and bread. Initial is red licorice, caramel and toffee, some biscuits, and oak. Vanilla, spirit and whiskey is gentle. Middle is a bit sweet, but firmly thinned. Some toffee, vanilla, oxidation. Backend is touches of spirit, dryness, and oak. A bit oxidized, dry. Still has held up surpringly well. Nice.
