COAST Blackbeerd Imperial Stout
12 ounce can into snifter, canned on 3/15/2016. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a small dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted oats, dark bread, brown sugar, molasses, light smoke/char, herbal, pine, light pepper, slight licorice/dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted oats, dark bread, brown sugar, molasses, light smoke/char, herbal, pine, light pepper, slight licorice/dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted oats, dark bread, brown sugar, molasses, smoke, char, herbal, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a great Russian imperial stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

COD 5/26/16. Golden pour that is crystal clear. World class head volume, lacing and quite outstanding retention. Outstanding nose of light lemon, pale and biscuit malt, very light floral hops and hints of wheat. Light medium body that is smooth and a bit slick. Outstanding carbonation / body balance that is mildly effervescent in the middle and prickly in the finish. The flavor profile is quite outstanding. It begins with a subtly tart weak lemon note that morphs into grainy wheat over subtle biscuit. The middle is slightly sweet and is contrasted with a very subtle floral bitterness. The finish is clean and somewhat crisp. A soft note of honey lingers.

That’ll be me 20K then @ ChrisO’s. Thanks to Padraig. Opaque dark brown beer, good bubbly tan head. Lactose nose. Palate is airy, semi dry and has decent fine carbonation. Thin dark malts, touch of dark malt creamy sweetness. Some lactose carries over from the nose. Spicy bubblegum ester. Spicy dark fruits. Light semi dry finish. Spicy dark malt linger and some unwelcome emulsion paint. Much to like but there are some off things here as well.

4 week old can into a stange. A: Deep gold pour with fast falling head Slow bubbles rising. S: Smells of green apple, alcohol and light toast. T: Dry tart taste is mainly hoppy with dry grassy flavor. A little fermented fruit. M: Medium/light bodied with average level of carbonation and dryish finish. O: Had high hopes for this but found it fairly average. Smells sort of like cheap wine and it’s not all too refreshing. Kolsch lovers advised to try it though.

Bottle [2012 edition] @ home. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized quickly diminishing dark brown head. Aroma is malts, bourbon, bourbon sweetness, vanilla. Lovely. Flavor is dark malts, soft roast, loads of bourbon, vanilla, pretty sweet bourbon flavor flowing into chocolate and light mocha before ending with a moderate malt-slight booze bitter finish. Medium body, oily and lightly sticky texture, soft carbonation. Good beer for sure, but I was so blown away (4.7) by the original that perhaps my expectations were a little too high. Thoroughly enjoyed it though.

Tallboy can into a snifter. 3.0 A: Murky copper plum color. Not quite one finger of frothy off-white head. Retention is below average, especially for the style and a short ring of lacing is left. 3.5 S: Mix of a few different hop components - pine and grapefruit, nondeScript spiciness, orange with a touch of lemon zest, and floral. Mild bready yeastiness with honey and caramel notes. Despite the complexity, it’s not as vibrant as I’d like. 3.5 T: Moderate bitterness. The bready yeastiness is pretty strong and distracting at times. Caramel and a slight toastiness. The hops are primarily piney with grapefruit. The other components listed in the smell are there as well, but all pretty subdued. 3.25 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lacking creaminess but it is rather chewy due to the yeastiness. 3.5 D: It’s not bad, but I prefer cleaner, less yeasty IPAs as a general rule. ★ 911 characters DavoleBomb, Jan 11, 2016

BOD 10/14/15. Slightly hazy medium amber pour. Outstanding head volume, world class lacing and retention. Outstanding nose of citrus hops (orange, grapefruit), tropical hints (mango, melon) and a nice dose of pine coupled with a spicy spruce element. Heavy light body with a smooth texture that has oily aspects. Slightly above normal carbonation with a touch of effervescence in the middle and a fairly prickly finish. The flavor profile is outstanding. Intensity is solid, but not over the top. The beer is nicely complex and quite well balanced. Orange rind and pine are the dominate flavors, with tropical notes appearing in the middle over a solid biscuit sweetness with a heavy caramel influence. The middle bitterness is moderate and is balanced with a rising sweetness as the bitterness fades. Here, also, is where the tropical notes are at their peak yielding a blended burst that fades into a nice sweet orange. The sweetness fades as the finish approaches and allows the spicy spruce to shine. Unfortunately, this is where the alcohol becomes uncovered yielding an astringency that prevents this quite outstanding beer from attaining world class status. The finish leaves that alcohol burn at the back of the throat and an astringent bitterness that lingers.

BOD 9/17/15. Hazy medium amber pour that is blood orange in strong light. Normal head volume, lacing and retention. Typical light marzen nose of biscuit malt with a bit of caramel coupled with a whiff of noble hops. Heavy light body that is smooth and delivers a hint of creaminess. Normal carbonation level with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a fair burst in the finish. The flavor profile is good. Intensity is nice, complexity poor and the balance is good. It begins with an herbal hop flavor that has a touch of spice. Malts provide the middle with a nice grainy cracker biscuit coupled with a soft caramel undertone. Sweetness is subtle. COAST Blackbeerd Imperial Stout - Jack Daniels Barrel
Pours pitch black and opaque with a one finger beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Very good retention for the style with streaks of spotty lacing left behind. Looks great. Very inviting aroma with spicy bourbon barrel notes nicely integrated into the characteristics of the base beer. Boozy with spicy bourbon but it doesn’t completely overpower the other notes. Some dry oak/toothpick character along with velvety vanilla bean, marshmallow and toasted coconut. Really nice barrel character with roasted and sweet malts lingering underneath. Roasted coffee bean, burnt toast, smoke and oatmeal followed by dark chocolate, fudge and faint licorice. Full bodied with slight viscosity and a spicy bourbon barrel presence that’s nicely integrated into the flavors of regular Blackbeerd. I’m not a big fan of he regular version but the barrel aging here has greatly improved the flavor. The four or so years time has mellowed things out considerably but there’s still some very nice whiskey flavor along with dry, toasted oak, coconut and vanilla. Dry, spicy and boozy but doesn’t have any heat at all at this point. JD still dominant but there’s also a decent malt presence lingering underneath. More roast than anything with flavors of burnt toast, bitter coffee grinds, charcoal and tamely but there is some bittersweet dark chocolate, toffee and caramel sweetness balancing things out somewhat. Decently balanced, complex and easy to drink but had lost some of it’s boozy bite over the years. Still, this beer has held up surprisingly well and still has plenty of flavor.
