78 /100 389 BROCKLEY ROAD The London Beer Dispensary is a fairly traditional-looking pub inside with wooden flooring and panelli g. The front room is small but there's more seating in the back along with a beer garden. They are very friendly & enthusiastic, and the beer is something to be enthusiastic about. Four cask and 10 keg, about half of which is Southey. ABVs and styles tend to be on the conservative side, but they do them well. A recommended stop. |
76 /100 31 HARCOURT ROAD Another one of those 'I didn't know it was there' Brewery taproom. You're invited to go behind the green door... and there it is. I've not been to their other site in Hither Green, but this was a revelation. The layout is a small utilitarian warehouse-y room, tanks to the right, bar in front. So your archetypal taproom really. Four cask and six keg (although some are repeated). Most of their beers are aessionable and of the general UK craft/trad styles, but they did a nice Belgian pale among the hoppy beers, bitter and porter. There aren't masses of good bars in this corner of London, but this one is worth checking out. |
72 /100 Joyce (Bar) 294 BROCKLEY ROAD Interesting little place on the Brockley Road. Has the feel of a hip cocktail bar but they also offer quite a few beers on keg. Very London-cebtric and with few surprises (e.g. Ansbach & Hopday The Black), but I also found a brewery that was new to RateBeer. A pub where it is worth checking King to see what's available. |
92 /100 Water into Beer (Beer Store) UNIT 2 MANTLE COURT, 209-211 MANTLE ROAD Can't praise this bottle shop highly enough. The selection is fantastic with plenty to choose from wether you like DIPAs, Impy stouts, sours, Saissons, pales, trappist or table beers. It's very reasonably priced, costing no extra to drink in with a free bowl of popcorn. Tim the owner is extremely knowledgeable and if he hasn't got what you want in stock he'll try and get it for you. There are plenty of theme nights including quizzes, live music and comedy and a home brew club. Plus WiB has everything you need to set up a homebrew with plenty of helpful advice. Brilliant addition to the area. |
74 /100 Salthouse Bottles (Beer Store) 12 COULGATE SREET Nice, quite compact bottle shop a couple of minutes walk from Brockley station. Opened about 18 months ago. Stock around 200 beers and also have 4 available for growler take-out (with help-yourself sample growlers also available). Helpful staff. Hope to get a chance to go back (easy to combine a visit to here and Water into Beer which is just a couple of minutes walk the other side of the train line). |
76 /100 Water into Beer (Beer Store) UNIT 2 MANTLE COURT, 209-211 MANTLE ROAD Cool drink in bottle shop a couple of minutes walk from Brockley station. Opened about 20 months ago. Stock 200 or so beers including quite a few from local breweries I'd not seen stocked elsewhere. Was left alone to make my selection but when I asked a question about one brewery I got a helpful reply. Hope to get a chance to go back (easy to combine a visit to here and Salthouse which is just a couple of minutes walk the other side of the train line). |
68 /100 389 BROCKLEY ROAD I could have sworn I had already added & review this place...Anyway. The London Beer Dispensary is the Brockley outpost of the growing Late Knights bar mini-chain. It is a bar without a bar... Inside it is a stripped-back and open 1-room job, where the beer is dispensed from the wall in the corner! On my visit they had 8 ales (from gravity dispense), 5 ciders, a few kegs and a decent range of bottles. I am not a huge fan of gravity dispense from bars and I found the beer condition variable. I much prefer the new Gipsy Hill location and Peckham outpost in that respect. A good addition to this part of town and I hope it will only improve going forward. |
54 /100 Jay’s Budgens Crofton Park (Grocery Store) 400-406 BROCKLEY ROAD Offers something different to the Co-op and Londis that are closer to the station. |
56 /100 Jay’s Budgens Crofton Park (Grocery Store) 400-406 BROCKLEY ROAD Decent shop. Has a fair range of British breweries, including a few obscurities that I haven’t seen elsewhere. Limited Belgian selection, some German. Prices are pretty average, ambiance is fine, service is friendly. Good range of foodstuffs as well. Not a place to visit specifically, but worth a stop if you’re passing by. |
