“Visited on a Sunday afternoon to meet friends. Located in a small business office on the west-side of Lawrence. The interior is basic, with concrete floors, 6 tables, 3 booths and a bunch of seats at the bar. 11 house beers on, along with a house made seltzer. Full pours or 5 oz tasters. Good service. Food menu was typical brewery taproom. It was freezing when I was there, though I did notice a nice outdoor patio area that would be nice in the summer. (Locals should check it out, visitors who are in the area) I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Very nice bottle shop with a well-curated selection. You can find your KS ticks here, but also plenty from all over the Midwest and beyond. Prices are relatively low. Good, helpful, knowledgeable service. Great spot for bottle shopping.“

“I went to two Lawrence breweries, and this one was the better one. I tried 8 beers and most were well-done, especially their gose and berliner. 5 oz pours of anything and staff will also do samples. Service was very good and the place itself is modern-ish and very comfortable. Worth a stop when in Lawrence.“

“The OG and classic Kansas brewery, though not the best one of the Lawrence breweries these days. I'm sure, back in their heyday, this was truly something. The place is located in the heart of downtown Lawrence, with pay street parking during the day and week. They had a dozen or taps when I visited, with 5 oz pours of everything for $2.25 (or $5 for their more expensive beers, which is a ripoff given that you can get a bottle of Old Backus for barely over $3). Beer quality is solid, service is fine, and the place is pleasant. Worth a hit if you're in Lawrence.“

“They had a pretty good selection of Kansas beers available as singles, which served my purpose for visiting. The beers were from the more established Kansas breweries, but not seemingly well curated, especially when compared to Cork and Barrel a couple miles away.“

“The beer selection here is world class, with offerings from top breweries from, both regional and far flung. I spoke with the young man responsible for the beer selection and he was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The fact that so many are available as singles make this a must stop.“

“Huge place in an old industrial space surrounded by abundant parking. Large and beautiful outdoor area almost as big as the cavernous indoors. Long bar and lots of restaurant tables. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. Tasty food. Beers are above average. Tied for my favorite in Lawrence.“

“Visited on a Wednesday evening with Travlr. Located across the street from Free State on Lawrence’s Main Street (Massachusetts Street). As you enter, there is a really nice outdoor space, with tables and places to hangout. Interior is pretty wood and brick, nice layout with a central bar, and seating around. 13 house beers on, the two appetizers we had were tasty. Service was friendly and prompt. Beers I had could use some work, but overall worth the stop. (Locals should check it out, visitors with extended time) I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Visited on a Wednesday night with Travlr. Located in the Warehouse district, ~6 east of Mass St. Parking is available along the street. Interior is a big long bar to the left, secondary bar seating to the right with more traditional restaurant seating beyond. There is also outdoor seating. 8 house beers on draft, good service and the food that was being delivered around us looked solid. Worth a stop if you are in Lawrence. (Locals should check it out, visitors with extended time) I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Visited on a very hot, late afternoon on a Friday. Located right off of 23rd Street on the East side of Lawrence. Parking on the side of the building, as well as the street nearby. The location is split into three areas, the bar area, indoor dining and a large outdoor patio. The bar area is a longer bar with seating, high top tables and a window into the brewery. Normal tables in the dining area, and the outdoor area has a nice design with areas to sit, firepit and what appeared to be a stage. The beer menu featured 12 house beers, available as 5 oz, 10 oz and oz pours as well as 32 oz and 64 oz growlers to go. Also had some bottles available to go. Good variety of styles, all of the beers I have had from Fields & Ivy are solid. The food menu was pizza and sandwiches, the quality of which were standard brewpub fare. Good crowd, good service. Would love to return with nice weather and hang out on the patio. (Worth the visit, must for locals, and visitors with time) I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Stopped in for a beer with Patty and Erica. Nice small place in a nice downtown area. Good service. Brewers in this area don't know how to make a good NEIPA yet. Nice air cooling on a hot day.“

“11 a.m. visit. New brewery just open a few months. Nice location and very nice layout. Very clean and inviting. Great service (first customer). About 14 of their beers on tap. The four I tried were all pretty good. They are working on their first barrel aged stout. Menu looks good. Will visit again.“

“Solid new brewery in Lawrence. Considering how packed this place was on a Friday night, I'd say the Lawrence brewery market is far from saturated. Really friendly staff, plenty of their own brews on tap. Pizza was solid. Great addition to the Lawrence beer scene.“

“Visited mid-March, 2019 while visiting some friends in Lawrence. New place... so new I had to add the brewery and place to RateBeer. Shows you how active we are these days. We didn't eat any food, but get the vibe it would be pretty good. Beer was average. Honestly we didn't get to try much as they had opened pretty recently and we were there after St. Patrick's Day and the waiter informed us a lot of the beers were tapped out and they didn't have stock to put back on. Anyway. Nice place, dimly lit, sort of a fancier restaurant vibe, but not offputting. Big wooden bar, lots of booths and tables. We had a friendly waiter with cursory knowledge of the beers. I'd come back to try some food and get some ticks. A bit on the expensive side, but it goes with the vibe of the place.“

“First visited while in town auditioning at KU back in the spring of 2009, but never reviewed the place, apparently! Visited again late May, 2018 with Mrs. Owl and a couple of friends after a friend's wedding. Couldn't visit Lawrence without hitting up the iconic (to us old RBians) Free State! Neat enough place, friendly and knowledgeable bartenders. Lots of wood everywhere, dimly lit in the evening, but nice and clean. I thought this place was a golden gem back in the day, and they still have some uber famous beers to old school beer nerds, but the truth is most of the beers you'll get on tap are clean but nothing special. They've gotten pretty big now and you can get their mix 12pks and random 6pks all over town and they usually aren't anything special. Hopefully a couple good one off unique beers are on tap when you stop in because those are often worth it!“

“Visited late May, 2018 with Mrs. Owl and a couple of friends while in town for a wedding. Big place, quite big actually, with lots of outdoor seating as well. Dimly lit in the evening, lots of wood, metal, cement; kind of standard operating procedure with breweries these days, but it was clean and nice. Bartenders were friendly and able to answer questions. It was BUSY, so we sat outside, which was pleasant enough. Beer was okay at best. I'd be back for ratings if in town, but not a destination.“

“Visited while in town for a wedding late May, 2018. Kansas has weird laws about where you can buy beer and we were in a hurry so asked someone the closest place to buy craft beer and someone suggested this place. It's basically a wine store, but they had a small selection of craft beers, including some local and regional beers. Clean, well-lit place with very friendly service, knowledgeable about wines. I was just happy to leave with a couple local sixers to drink in the AirBnB, but definitely not an outstanding or destination store. Works in a pinch.“

“Revised rating: I said I would be back if I was ever in town again and here I am 13 years hence. Same footprint, but everything is way better. Service is outstanding, beer selection is now huge, food excellent and with very reasonable prices. They still don’t have Owd Macs or Old Backus, and since I could find neither on Untappd, I’m guessing they don’t make them anymore. No matter; all the beers I had in my 5 beer flight were excellent. A must stop for beer lovers in Lawrence. Original rating (3,6,7,na,na,13,58) 6/21/05:I’m a little surprised by the high ratings here. The bar area is tiny, though not nearly as small as Barley John’s in New Brighton, MN. The extent of the seating in the bar area that is not actually at the bar consists of 4 chairs set up along a ledge to the right of the bar and 4 lower chairs around a small bar stool posing as a table. There was no service to either of these areas. All the rest of the seating in the place, which has two stories, is reserved for diners. We arived at around 4:15pm on a Saturday, and they would not give us a table in either of the "dining areas" and the bar itself was full. The outdoor patio was full of smokers. So, I was forced to write my notes on the bar stool, a tough task when you are sharing such a small surface with 3 beer glasses. Finally, for a place that has gained a world-wide reputation based upon 2 beers, to not have either of them year round is a disservice to the customer. The offerings that were available were solid, but not anything extraordinary. I was frankly underwhelmed but would still go back if in the area and I knew either the Owd Macs or the Old Backus were available.“

“About 15 of their own beers on tap - most available in 5 oz pours for less than two bucks each - which translates into lots of tasting opportunities. All were very good, some exceptional. We were there on a Friday night but it was not too crowded or unruly. Friendly bar tender and the well lubricated customers, made for a fun time.“

“Stopped in for lunch today. I liked the ambiance of the renovated old warehouse space. Not a large menu, but some good selections. I had the broccoli beer cheese soup and it was excellent. Also a very large bowl. I tried 2 of the beers and they were both very good. Definitely worth a stop.“

“New brewpub in Lawrence, KS. Stand alone refurbished warehouse. Nice venue. 12 taps, 2 guest and 10 of their beers. Excellent service. Prices seemed very fair. Crowler service available. Food available. A few blocks from Lawrence's main street. Ample parking.“

“Free State is in a old renovated storefront location, with a small bar & the kitchen on the ground floor and most of the seating on the second floor (I didn’t check it out). I thought the selection was pretty good. I got a flight ($1.85/sample, 4-5 in a flight) son I could sample a few and I liked the Octoberfest and the Garden Party (very herby and vegetal) the best, though the seasonal watermelon tart was interesting. This is a family friendly brew pub with free balloons for the kids and a lot of to go orders for the locals. The ladies room was in pretty good condition.“

“Located on Massachusetts street which seems to be the main drag in Lawrence. We couldn’t find street parking so we ended up in a garage next to the public library which only a couple of blocks away and was ridiculously cheap. It’s nice old Building with a small bar on the first floor and most of the floor space on the second. They had 14-16 on tap and the prices were very reasonable. I thought the IPA’s were the highlights. The food was solid and again very reasobably priced. The place was fairly well packed on Saturday night so the bar staff really had to hustle to keep up with all the orders. It was better than I was expecting.“

“This has all the appearances and accessories for a sports bar, large central bar, lots of tables, and big screen TVs everywhere. Packed with friendly, mostly older locals on a Friday later afternoon, mostly drinking giant frosted glasses of Miller Lite. They had ten of the Yankee Tank beers when I visited, available in full pours or flight of four, six or eight for about a buck per taster. The beers varied, as many new breweries do, I think. The hoppy ones were OK, but all tasted fairly similar. One stout was decent. Only one beer was a bit rough. Servers were friendly and efficient. Plenty of parking on three sides. Overall I’d say it’s worth a look, and hopefully will refine their technique.“

“This place is just a few minutes’ drive south of Fair State. Not quite as big as Cork n Barrel, but still has quite a good selection. There is a sort of mix your own six section, but beers are individually priced - still it’s great to see so many singles. A number of local and regional breweries are represented, it’s organized by brewery, and prices are decent. Worth a stop.“

“Henry T’s is located west of Downtown Lawrence in a strip mall which features plenty of parking. The restaurant is a normal sport bar type setup with a bigger bar and a decent sized covered patio on the west side of the building. The main draw at the moment, is that Henry T’s (along with their location inTopeka) is the only place service Yankee Tank beers. There appears to be an affiliation betewen the two companies, didn’t ask on the specifics. When I visited for lunch on a Friday, there were 7 of the Yankee Tank beers on draft, along with a small number of everday guest beers. Beers are lower abv focused, which I appreciated, and are served as pints, with no advertised sampler tray available. My server (who was attentive and very friendly) was happy to supply tasters as requested, though this may not be the case when they are busier. Also feature 32 and 64 ounce growlers to go. Food selection is normal bar and grill, the pizza I had was quite tasty. Overall, the draw of this place is the Yankee Tank beer, and for that reason alone worth the visit.

70 = ★★½ (Locals should check it out, visitors with extended time)

I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Nice place within close walking distance of the riverfront. Has a sort of patio that was covered up with smokers on my two visits, so I went right on inside. First floor, front area has a small bar area and is noisy as hell with lots of acoustical problems, since the place seems to be always crowded. But if you want to explore further (and sit at a table where you will be constantly harangued about ordering food) the place is kind of a labyrinth with multi-levels spreading to the back and gets less noisy. The service was good and efficient, if hurried and undistinguished on my two visits. I was with a party of four on two different nights and we ordered different appetizers and entrees. They were all good and cheap, but not worth seeking out if you have another food destination in mind. The beers were above average and that’s really the best reason to go here. Value is awesome with $4 pints and half pour and samples also available at great prices.“

“On a hot day...in a cool town...a welcoming respite from our travels from KC to OKC. The venue is special...sat upstairs with a nice view down onto the bar. Would have liked to have sat outside...but even in the shade...like I said...hot day!. The beers were very good...tried all of them. They brought us 13 different ones...only problem...they mixed them all up...which was particularly annoying given a few were only slight variations of others. After pointing that out...they gave us a whole new set of 13...now that’s the right way to do things! My favorite was the Cloud Hopper Imperial IPA. The food was very good and I highly recommend having a meal with their beers. This place is a must visit when passing anywhere near Lawrence, KS.“

“Lawrence’s *other* brewpub. :) Interesting interior architecture, has sort of a "tipi" effect but made of wood planks, primarily. The design is probably my favorite thing about this place, though. The beers range from good to slightly below average. The food is not bad, just typical brewpub stuff -- chicken fingers, burgers, etc. Service has also been fine the couple of times I have visited. Prices are about average, perhaps a tad on the high side for what you get, but not by much. I’ll be honest, I just don’t see the point, unless you live in Lawrence and want a change of pace. If you’re from out of town, I wouldn’t bother because this is a very cookie-cutter type place, been there and done that.“
