“Solid store in Nanaimo. If you're passing through on your way to more interesting places, stop here or Cascade Nanoose to stock up because the selection is solid, but it gets weak soon after you get north of Nanaimo.“

“Easily the best craft beer store in Nanaimo. Lots of BC Craft and an improving selection of imports. Worth a visit.“

“A cool brewery on the main drag, high ceiling building, big taproom like a big chalet, plenty of seating, spotty wifi. Excellent friendly service. Sampler glass are 2.50 to 3$ each. Solid beers with good hazy Ales. Limited snack menu but tasty pretzels.“

“Professional looking taproom with 10 house beers and limited food. Lots of parking around back. The beers aren't bad. I thought most were pretty good, with just a couple of clunkers.“

“Set out in an industrial slash residential area it's a very small little tasting counter, a fridge, and a nice patio out front if the weather's good. Only a single flight of three 4 ounce pours is available per day per customer. Growler fills are available. Their beers are different than the brewpub, some are better and some aren't, so it's worth stopping in if you're curious anyways. But on the other hand most of their stuff is already available elsewhere in town, so I wouldn't really hit this place unless you move to Nanaimo.“

“Small tasting room setup in an industrial park way on the edge of town, though they've expanded the area recently to have a sort of patio area. Flights are available with frequent seasonal updates, good service. Value is pretty good. I'm not sure this place is worth going of your way for but it's an okay option in the area.“

“2019-08-19. Nice spot with a good number of beers on tap. Beers we tried were decent. Decor is sort of cafe meets bar? Interesting space. Not much in the way of food - I think someone got a pizza delivered while we were there? Friendly servers. Would have stayed longer but we were getting tired and there happened to be a long line at the bar when we were ready for our next round. Worth a visit if you are in town. Lots of restaurants nearby if you want to eat before/after. Short walk to the waterfront. “

“2019-08-19. Fairly big store. I think probably the largest beer selection we have seen this trip by a significant margin. Most BC craft brewers represented I think. Some nice US imports are available but some are fairly pricey. Lots of four pack only cans are kind of annoying if you are just visiting but they have a large selection of singles as well. We did the bulk of our buying for the trip here and bought less than we might have if we had more luggage space! On tap at Wolf Brewing, Nanaimo, BC.“

“2019-08-19. Small space with 5-6 taps I think? A few tables and a small patio looking onto the parking lot. Nice, but a bit sparse at the same time. Friendly server. Beers were just okay. “

“2019-08-19. Very big space with a restaurant upstairs and pub area downstairs. Good amount of outdoor seating on two patios. Friendly server. 10 taps available but the four we tried today were pretty disappointing to poor. Food menu looks decent but we did not eat here. Just okay. Skippable. Maybe the taproom location is better?“

“Finally, I managed to visit this place. Located in a massive shopping complex, the place is spread over 2 floors, each with their own bar. Single 6 oz pours of any beer available for $1.95. All the beers we tried were barely drinkable, with some noticeable infections – apparently, time in the beer industry doesn’t guarantee a lack of infections, at least on the island. They had a vegan option on the menu, a curry bowl, so I ordered that – tasty, but insulting small portion for the outrageous price ($19 before tax/tip). Service was solid. Was not happy with the beer or food.“

“Quite a large spacious tasting room in downtown Nanaimo, service was fast. Some fancy fire stuff when you walk in, good wooden tables. Plenty of their own beers on tap of pretty good quality. I didn't try the food but given how central this place is it's the preferred spot in town if you're heading in or out for business.“

“A big typical brewpub operation with two floors, wooden decor, and plenty of okay food options. Service was friendly enough. A good place to get a meal with your beer instead of the strict tasting room they have on the other end of town. Overall an okay restaurant though not too spectacular.“

“Quite a nice big bottle shop on the north end of suburban Nanaimo. Many local bottles available from all over the region so if you can't reach some of these far flung breweries on the island this is a good place to stock up. Service was friendly and prices weren't bad at all.“

“I really liked the atmosphere here. It was a nice modern, bright and airy venue with the brewery up one end, outdoor area at the other, and the main bar and seating area in between. Beers were all excellent quality versions of standard brews - no fancy flavours. They only have snack foods but the ones we tried were good. Service was good and music not too loud. All up a place I’d happily visit over an over again.“

“Great selection for Nanaimo! That said, don’t expect beer geek service. It’s basically just a suburban big box liquor store that has a solid range of craft beers.“

“Nice location near a residential area. Tasting room is small, but nicely setup. Super friendly service, but pretty clueless on the beer in general. You can order flights of 4 for $8 (tax included), which is a good deal. Beer itself ranged from barely drinkable to shit, with diacetyl infections in a couple of beers, though the server had no idea what that was and suggested that it was my palate (no). Hard to recommend this place due to the shit beer, but it’s a fun hangout and the people are friendly.“

“Lovely new place in the heart of Nanaimo. Parking lot was under construction on my visit, so there was alternate free parking across the street near the park. They had 7 beers on tap, all of which were available in 16 oz. or 6 oz. tasters; the latter for $2 ($3 for some). Service is super friendly and chatty, wanting to please. Beer quality is very good, especially for a young brewery. The best brewery in town at this point, and definitely worth a stop when in Nanaimo.“

“A converted train station that has seen better days. Huge but empty with nice staff. Beer is mainly European which is a nice change with a smattering of local craft. No flights and what seems like mediocre beer food. Great for large groups, but not so much tickers.“

“A nice tap room tucked away on an industrial road. Short hours and very average beer make this a stop that is only worth it if the starts align. Reasonable flights with up to 8 on board.“

“A stunning English pub on marvellous grounds. Really pleasant and better and cleaner than the best English pubs. A few craft beers on tap and a bit pricey with the food. Bar service only. A marvellous stop, but not for ticking.“

“A very average but large bar with multiple floors. Very friendly staff with no real understjanding of the mediocre beer they pour. Flights available and ok priced. Food is trendy bar food that is bland and over priced. Lots of ticks, but little else.“

“In an area where non local craft beer is hard to come by, this is an oasis. An eclectic and interesting selection with rock bottom prices for high end craft they can’t sell. All the weird local ciders to boot and craft beer events in a space on the second floor. A great place that unfortunately is likely unappreciated. Try and stop if you are in the area.“

“A really nice open airy spot downtown in a renovated old building. Staff was nice and knowledgable, brewer was around and was willing to chat. Beer wasn’t exciting, but solid and clean. Pretty good for a new brewery. Flights are available and reasonable. Worth a stop.“

“Stopped here to stock up for my remote trip to the coast. A healthy selection of Vancouver Island breweries and other BC breweries as well. A couple of young girls knew a little about the beer, but were really friendly. A good wine selection as well.“

“Been there 2 times, I got a good feeling about this pub; at least in 2008 I found some small bottles to go, in 2011 only bombers (of Imperial Stout? really??? this is a bad trend in BC, strong beers only available in big bottles); the atmosphere inside seems nice; the woman serving the beers is smiling; and they have a decent selection for a brewpub, with about 8 beers available.“

“I totally surprsied by the number of brewpubs where the attachment between food and beer is nonexistant. The food was good and the beer was boring or should I say a big yawn. The only beer of any memorable thought and the only one we bought for take away was the Framboise. Been there done that doubt I would go back.“

Crow and Gate Pub (Restaurant)
2313 YELLOWPOINT ROAD
“A gorgeous beer-ing location, the Crow & Gate was established in 1972 in a Yorkshire-style local pub with exposed dark wood and contrasting white plaster. It serves traditional pub grub and english cheese platters. Beautiful grounds and back patio. Home to wandering geese and barn owls. Taps of Vancouver Island, Fat Cat, Phillips and Merridale. Standard English imports and Duvel. Over 20 single malt scotches. They are known for their Kidney Pie, Pan Fried Oysters, Crab Cakes and Beef Dips. Not a place to miss.“

“I will admit it - I came for brunch. But it didn’t stop me from ordering a sampler. The beer was watery, the buffet was mostly cold, and the sushi was a down-right BC disgrace. I never made it downstairs to the bar - I really couldn’t justify the trip 1) being the driver, 2) having my 88-year old Great Aunt with me; so my review is for the restaurant. I hope to make it back someday... Oh, and I shouldn’t forget: They wouldn’t sell me the Barleywine other than in a Growler for $24!!!“

“Restaurant upstairs, pub downstairs. Lots of wood. The place is new. Four beers are on handpumps, the rest are served with regular taps, rather frozen too. Wide range of brands available, though only a few are anything terribly interesting. Merridale’s Cider on tap - hard to find upisland. Worth a visit, but don’t forget Fat Cat Brewery on the other end of town, either.“

“A fairly long drive out of Nanaimo, but worth it. Lots of different in-house brewed beer available all the time. The beer that they brew is pretty good and the food is very good. Family friendly. Worth going to if in the area.“
