Midtown Oyster Bar (Restaurant)
345 THAMES ST
“Visited in May 2023. Very central and touristy place for seafood and drinks. The food is really good. They had 14 beers on tap though only a few craft choices. Nice place to put away some oysters with beer. Expensive as expected though.“

“Local dive bar with great service and some great pub type food. The taps aren't as good as they used to be and are smaller more expensive pours of the higher ABVs. Better food and taps up the street.“

“World-class beer: 20 taps, 1 cask, & 100 plus bottles. Voted Best Beer Bar in RI 2016-2019 by Craftbeer.com, rated 100 Beer Advocate Magazine, and Best Craft Beer Selection 2017 by Newport Life Magazine readers. Norey's features tap takeovers of world-class beer, mostly by style.

“This is the best beer bar in Southern New England. Not only does it showcase World Class Beer in 20 taps, 1 cask, & 100 plus bottles, it's also a 5-star neighborhood bistro with a menu which changes daily. If I'm going a drink a beer on tap that is only found in Europe, I don't want to eat a burger or nachos. I want a great meal to go along with it. Norey's has the best chef on Broadway and everything is made in-house including the house smoked chicken wings. The house-made pasta is fantastic. It rivals every Italian restaurant in Newport. Bolognese, Goat Cheese Tortellini with house-made sausage, Lobster Scampi, Chicken Pesto, Bourbon Bacon Pappardelle, & more.  The entire staff able to help you choose a beer based on your past experience or lead you to experiencing something new. Anyone can buy beer in a liquor store or a brewery. Drinking quality beer in a restaurant is an experience.  Norey's offers free live music Wed. Americana, Blues, Bluegrass & Thurs. World Class Jazz. There are also World Class Tap Takeovers- a brewery or a style including ciders, sours, holiday beers from around the world. Takeover range from 8 taps to the full 20 taps and stay up until they are gone- usually about 2 weeks. “

“Great family business for locals. You are going to find the top RI beers here, but nothing rare. Great prices on bourbon. I love supporting this local business and this great family.“

“Patty and I stopped in for lunch Friday after the 'Newport walk'. We were very thirsty. I found 2 beers I have not had before. We had fast service from the ladies working there. The food was the usual bar offerings.“

“Small spot right in downtown. Bar on the left with a limited amount of tables on the right. I didn't count all of the beers on tap but there's a lot. Rotating stock. There's always a beer for somebody. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Food is outstanding! Prices are a little steep, but it's tourist season in Newport. I'll have to some back sometime during the off season. Definitely work going!!!“

“Nice upscale little bar right on the strip in downtown. The selection here tends to lean towards the Belgians. But it's always rotating so there's usually a little something for everyone. Staff seemed knowledgeable but not really all too friendly. They may have been getting ready for the Friday evening crowd, I've been a server before so I understand how it is. Prices were a little steep, but it's Newport. That, and the quality is a little higher than what is seen normally in the area. I didn't get the food, but it looked absolutely amazing. To be honest, this place kind of reminded me of Deep Ellum outside of Boston.“

“Nice place in downtown Newport, minutes from Pour Judgment. Small tap selection and no flights or small pours or even free samples offered, so this was a total dealbreaker for me. Rather cold service, who didn’t seem to care much. Pricey. Not recommended.“

“Nice long bar in downtown Newport. Reasonably big taplist with a few nice RI beers. No flights or small pours though, which is really a deal breaker for me at this point. Friendly service. Worth a stop if you’re spending the night or a bunch of hours in Newport.“

“Stopped in for lunch. Nice Irish bar, longer than it is wide. Lots of wood throughout the bar. Plenty of seating at the bar or tables. Good Irish food and a few guest taps from Down the Road. Got a sampler and all were good. Neat place to try.“

“Located on what looks like the main drag of Newport. Parking was available on the street though I had to walk a few blocks. Definitely has kind of a rich moneyed vibe about the place. They had 18-20 taps with half filled with mediocre Belgian and Scandinavian offerings and the other half regional craft. There wasn't a lot on the tap list that I hadn't seen before. The food was tasty. Unfortunately the bartender was rude and condescending. Clearly if you read through the reviews for this place, many of them feel like plants. Maybe if the bartender wasn't such an asshole I might go back, but it doesn't strike me as any type of destination place.“

“Overall very impressed with Norey’s and their management. Huge fan our sour beers and really have never found a place with this strong of a beer selection. OEC was on tap and don’t think that quality of sour beers can be found in many places. Management was incredibly friendly and would highly recommend this bar...especially for beer geeks!“

“Visited on a Saturday early afternoon. Kind of hard to find as it’s signage is small and it’s tucked away from the road a bit. Once found, the parking situation is good. Plenty of spots. They make rum and beer here and you can do a flight of each if you like. The beer flight was $8 and it included 4 beers and a Newport Storm Snifter. Pretty good deal. The beers here were all decent and the service was friendly. With each sample (you got one at a time since you taste with your snifter) they give you a bit of a background and some of their own tasting notes for it. Other than the tasting area, there is a merchandise area as well. Normal merch, plus they have each of their current beers available for purchase either in packs or individually. That was a nice touch. I would definitely recommend stopping in here if you find yourself in Rhode Island.“

“Stopped by while on a cruise stop. Very rainy day and didn’t venture too far from ship on my own. Nice bar (and restaurant). Very busy, but bartenders did their best. Was only place in Newport I had a chance to visit because of weather. Glad to visit this bar.“

“A very good bar overall. The tap selection is solid, but certainly not outstanding. They have a small selection of local/regional breweries, some national craft stuff and then some (I seem to recall) macro as well. The food, though, is outstanding and really good value. I had the hot pastrami sandwich and I also tried my wife’s grilled cheese; both were superb - classic pub grub, and really well made. The prices on beers were fair as well. Friendly and pretty efficient service. Has kind of an ’upscale dive bar’ feel to it, if you catch my drift.

Newport doesn’t have a lot in the way of beer destinations, so if you find yourself in town this is a very good option - especially for a meal with your beer.“

“Very premium bar in Rhode Island. It’s a high rent area so it has to be expensive but look over that and the staff you get on keg wow. Great bottle range. Attentive staff who really know their stuff. Killer blues band. Awesome place. Really perfect microamtic keg system and one of the best places for well looked-after beer which I’ve been to. Take a lot of money and spend it and be happy. I was.“

“Norey’s is my favorite spot in Newport for serious craft beer. It is tucked away on Broadway Street amongst dozens of other bars and restaurants, but it stands out once you step inside. Upon entering, you are greeted by nearly impossible beers to find on draft in Rhode Island like De Dolle (yes Stille Nacht!), BFM, and OEC. I was also there for their Stout Tap Takeover when they had Black Albert Russian Imperial Stout, KBS Stout, Bourbon County, Speedway Stout, My Blueberry Nightmare, and other tasty treats. The food is also very tasty, especially the Smoked Wings and Baked Quattro Formaggi. There are other bars serving decent craft brews in Newport, but the quality doesn’t compare. I’m not sure how they get this kind of selection, but I hope they keep doing it.“

“4 samples and a glass for $7.50. Guided tours and self guided available to look from a deck above the brewing space. They also distill rum. Shirts, bottles of beer and rum, and other items are available for sale. Worth a stop. Pretty solid.“

“Visited on a busy Sunday afternoon, and we had burgers with fries and some nice beers to go with the food. Service was quick, jokingly and friendly. It’s a narrow and long room with seating for around forty people, and there’s also room for approx twenty people at the bar. Some not so interesting beers on tap, but quite a few good ones too.“

“The acustic condition in this room is horrible, but with good beers, friendly service and guests it doesn’t matter. We had the sampler tray, which included four beers, but they happily serves us all five that were on tap when we asked. There’s also beers that can be bought to bring back home, and they serve local rum as well. T-shirts, glassware etc are also available.“

“Malt has at least 20 taps. They have beer on Nitro and casks. They are the former owners of Buskers-so everything you read about Buskers is really about them. The service is excellent- nice people who know the beers and the food. Good food with a little something extra. Nice selection of small plates-Thai shrimp nachos originated here when it was Tucker’s. Menu is posted on Trip Advisor. Tom and Chelynn are great hosts.“

“I’ve been here a number of times over the years. As a wine store, they are actually quite good with a very good selection of wines. As others have noted, it is terribly disorganized though. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to where they put everything. The beers are equally disorganized. There’s usually a decent selection to choose from with some local representation. There is no growler station. The store is also overheated, which can’t be good for the beer or the wine. It’s location right on Bellevue make it very convenient and there is ample parking.“

“Great Beer Selection! I stumbled upon this place while walking around in Newport. It definitely stands out amongst other bars around town. 20 craft beers on tap, and over 200 bottles. I was floored. The House smoked wings are a great appetizer if you’re sitting at the bar, or their house-made pasta if you’re feeling more on the hungry side. Great Stop if you’re a beer fanatic.“

“Amazing family business- the kids are there all the time and both sets of grandparents are often around. They moved up the street and now own their store. Employees are friendly and hard working. Good wine, beer, and liquor selection. They have some solid craft sixpacks-Sierra Nevada, Southern Tier, ShipYard, Dogfish Head, Lagunitas, Magic Hat, Long Trail. They have cases of the Narragansett Del’s Shandy. They will break up six packs and look for the bin of orphans near the register for $1. They are right next door to Malt and Norey’s the two best beer bars around, both with great food. You aren’t going to find rare bottles, but since you are in the neighborhood to check out Norey’s- stop in at Malt and the Rex too. “
