“According to their advertisement, it is the smallest pub in Gent; well, it is really small, but the beer selection still deserves a visit: 5 beers on tap, 10 in bottles including Orval and the two Westmalle beers“

“Listening bar with amazing sound, exceptional service, impressive record collection, real attention and gorgeous interior. Jazz was playing when visited with amazing selection. Beer isn't the focus, but they have a well selected beer menu with DuPont, Dok, Cazeau, Stroom en Dochter van de Korenaar. Wine, whiskey, hard liquor, cocktails custom-made also available. Wonderful place.“

“Gorgeous Art Nouveau Parisien-esque interior, located by the water. Very crowded and very busy, leading to a feeling of needing to rush things getting served, finding a server took some time. They have their own wine (which was out), house beer made by Dok (not bad but very acidic), hot sauce, and they also sell their own 35 euro candles. Beer menu wasn't too big but had some interesting things besides the house beer from Stroom and De La Senne. Coctails looked reasonably priced, didn't try.“

“I am familiar with the Bier Central in Antwerpen, so I came here with certain expectations. Very busy, very touristic, very commercial. Service took a bit of time mainly due to business. Menu took some time figuring out, there are a lot of beers and 33 taps but everything is overpriced and quantity over quality is definitely the goal. Interior is not bad, tacky but I can see some charm, odd love radio songs on. The place is booming but no value if you know a bit about beer. To add on top my bottle of Abbaye de Rocs Brune was infected, very visibly, gusted, odd how often this franchise has infected beers. Server wasn't familiar enough with beer to notice it or say anything about it. Crowded terrace but good location.“

“Ghent's former brewpub Brouwbar, taken over and refurbished by Dok under the name De Welkom - with which they now have a location in the city centre to draw attention to their products, doubtlessly a commercial advantage due to the fact that many more visitors (especially from outside the city) reach the Patershol quarter than the Oude Dokken, where the actual Dok brewery with taproom is located. Opened last year with a specialty beer for the occasion (a stunning 'oud bruin' called Welkom), this new venue has indeed been very welcoming right from the start, kept open by familiar faces who also work at the taproom at Dok Noord. In principle, all the new beers Dok produces should be present here too, either from tap or from can or bottle - but I have noticed several exceptions to that principle already so I will still have to visit the taproom as well every now and then (with pleasure, of course). I do miss Brouwbar, my old local in the same building, but I must admit that I am very glad Dok took over here - this place could otherwise just as well have been turned into a barbershop, a grocery or a hipster coffee shop for all I know. So yes, Welkom has become my new local in Ghent and I am happy with it - thanks to the efforts Dok made here, Oudburg remains a street one must pass through when chasing craft beer in Ghent.“

“Visited here November 23 in the pissing down rain on a grim Thursday night. I thought we’d have the place to ourselves and I couldn’t have been more wrong. Joint was absolutely heaving and we only just got a seat, and given the vastness of the place we were well surprised. Anyhoo, it’s a huge beer hall with a long bar with brew kit behind and several consessions doing food. A pizza place, a bbq place and something else. They all looked to be doing a brisk trade. Loads of taps both their own and guests, with a load of different styles. Very decent quality overall served by efficient and friendly staff. Once we’d got used to the slightly bonkers atmosphere we really enjoyed this place. Would return for sure.“

“Called here on a Friday in November, first for lunch, then later the same day for dinner. We were the only punters early doors, but the friendly staff offered a warm welcome. We asked if we could have a Croque Monsieur that strictly we were too late for, but it was no problem for the kitchen, and it was excellent. Two beers on tap (made for them) and an extensive range in bottle, although for the big hitters (3F and Pellicle and the like) they ain’t cheap. Natural cider and wine available too. In the evening the place was heaving but we’d booked a table and enjoyed the food on offer and more of the draft beer. Very efficient friendly service and a nice place to spend time. Well worth a visit.“

“Purveyors of the worst in Belgian brewing tradition seem to be getting some locations in central Gent with Dragòn (Van Steenberge), Bier Central and this place owned by Huyghe. The place is popular and very slick and modern, Christmas decorations (it is the season and I am a sucker), pictures of Gent and Jacob Van Reveled tap handles etc. Very modern, very much professionally done, thoroughly branded, aimed bit more upscale and soulless. In line with Huyghe branding, I cannot be angry at this place, it is tacky, it aims at a certain clientel, and I am not one to care for to begin with. Half a dozen of beers on tap, tried two, esters, alcohol, served in 33 cl. very old school strong big Belgian beer and difficult to drink or to enjoy really. Fermenting tanks above you, saw a brewery tour in progress, decent prices given the size, set-up doesn't allow for very personal service but they were doing great given circumstances. It does everything it set out to do, I struggled with the beer but I knew that would be the case and this place isn't for me nor is it for beer geeks, it will do well.“

“Bar name translates to the velvet pussy which is an interesting choice & I got some branded merch for free as well (ballpen). Scenic view of the city outside, bit barebones interior, low rundown touch, red drapes, brick, candles, and cantina style tables. Welcoming, friendly, and relaxed service. Agreeable prices menu consisting of loads of uninteresting beers Primus, Star, Tongerlo, Triple Karmeliet. Luckily there are the trappist beers & a few semi-obligated now, new Gent craft beers (Hedonis). Charming no-nonsense boozer of sorts for the middleclass, food includes dried sausage handed in your hand or placed on the counter.“

Folklore (Bar)
LANGE STEENSTRAAT 69
“Folklore didn’t steal it’s name, truly a piece folklore from a largely gone era whose existence still in the center of Gent is almost hard to believe. Although rumor does have it that it might cease operation in the near future due to the age of the owners. Tap menu isn’t interesting with Jupiler, Stella & Bolleke – the outside has plenty of Jupiler advertising. The menu has its share of big brand, strong poor beers like Leffe, Tripel Karmeliet, sweetened lambiek, Bass even, luckily there is still Orval, St. Bernadus and a few comparable established classics. The beer menu isn’t the appeal of this place, it’s the decoration which hasn’t changed in decades, advertising beer brands long basterdized or no longer existing, phone numbers with an area code no longer in use for decades. Every square centimeter covered, drawing referencing regulars long dead. The popular snack includes even kroakemandels which were new to me, salted & oiled dried peas, local snack in Gent apparently of the working class- in a long-gone era with a secret recipe, nearly extinct outside of this establishment – tasty as well. A former regular entering the venue while were there looking for his lost phone was immediately yelled at to get out, clientele in various stage of intoxication and a table reserved to an individual with seemingly a drinking problem who had his assortment of coloring books and pencils. A largely gone era in Flanders history is still alive and well here for now.“

“Modern, big and stretched out in length with almost a cocktail bar feel, chandeliers, shinny black bar with bottles of strong liquor behind it and plenty of light fixtures. Slick, almost brasserie look and feel. Upstairs they frequently do stand-up comedy shows. The audience seemed to be far from beer geek oriented. Beer menu was a bit limited with one tap boasting a Bier Mirwaar which is a St Hubertus beer in disguise and quite rubbish. They did have a Verzet beer listed as a temporary special (16 % RIS) and some classics but far from impressive, Punk IPA on tap too. Sizable cocktail menu at nice prices, tried a Negroni which was solid but not great. Not big of a craft beer place but it has something, I highly doubt they’re trying to cater to beer geeks. Friendly service, okay prices.“

“The salvation indeed after the previous stop turned out to be closed on a Saturday evening with no prior communication. Corner building and bar, dictating the interior with very new looking furniture and wood with walls also painted in an almost uniform color. Reasonably popular, comfortable and lively. A neighborhood bar filled with locals as far I could tell, fitting in with some other new places in the nearby catering comparable concepts. A new brick wall on the side as well, modern lighting fixtures. Blackboard still had a Black Friday specials going on with some interesting cans and bottles including a new double BA beer from Stroom and a Black Lager from 13. The beer menu boasts quite a bit of the new wave Gent breweries as expected and modern classics but also some surprises such as beers from Rolling Hills, also a few beers new to me like beer from the BXL contract brewery Vandekelder. Pleasant and fun place with some surprises on its menu, nice atmosphere and enough to distinguish it a bit from nearby comparable places.“

“Located in the suburbs of Gent currently undergoing gentrification right across Hotel Columbo and in many ways the polar opposite of that bar. The interior is quite clean and modern, touch Scandinavian almost, tiles, new wood, new bricks, bit of a hybrid between a bar & coffee place almost. Very slick and modern (que obligated hipster), not an overtly beer geeky place with seemingly not a lot of knowledge of the beers but friendly service for sure. 6 taps with rotating / semi-fixed taps from Dupont, Vander Ghinste (pils and Oud Bruin on tap was a nice treat), L’Arogante, Chouffee, focus on the classic beers and modern local craft like Hedonis. Snacks and the hipster lemonades, juices etc. available as well. Slight touch too slick perhaps, aiming seemingly at a wider audience but still pleasing. Some specials on the walls including a contract brewed IPA from BXL and an RIS from Deca.“

“Located right across Café Congé in a suburb undergoing gentrification / revaluation currently. Outside of the bar is a sign displaying Columbo from the detective show. The interior is rich with pleasant curiosities from the red theater drapes to food signs stating that consumption as at your own risk, beer paraphernalia, tap handles with Chateau Migraine signs, multitude of jokes, menus with pinups etc. Service is great and welcoming, place feels quite “volks” / folksy with a host of characters frequenting the venue. A pleasantly curious neighborhood bar with a welcoming atmosphere and mild eccentricity. The venue is far more recent than you would expect. The main menu has mainly a selection of the classics such as Orval & Rochefort, there is a fridge with some modern craft and pleasant surprises at quite good prices where I saw Coolhead, some UK craft & commissions BE-brewed RIS. Definitely worth a visit for character, atmosphere and some pleasant beer menu surprises on top.“

“Musically oriented pub located where formerly “‘t Onverwacht Geluk” was located, a once popular pub in the Burgstraat in Ghent (St.-Michiels quarter) run by a lady who already had a certain taste for beer, as it was one of the very few pubs in Ghent where I could find 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze at the time – times were very different then when it comes to artisanal beer. Taken over by Toon Vlerick, member of the band Absynthe Minded, in 2018, he turned it into a popular music bar with a huge collection of vinyl records, DJ sets and so on, but also a more expanded selection of local craft beers, such as Verzet and Dok – nothing you will not find elsewhere, but still deserving of a brief mention on this site for those who happen to be nearby and fancy a Flemish beer other than the industrial clichés found everywhere. Meanwhile this atmospheric bar was in turn taken over by a couple who shifted focus from music to stand-up comedy (mostly taking place upstairs, three times a week), but apparently the beer selection has not changed so that brief mention here remains valid, as far as I am concerned. Do not take a detour for this one – go to Bar Beenhouwer instead of you are really after craft beer in this part of the city – but it is a pleasant stop nonetheless, on the way from the city centre to e.g. the old beguinage quarter (see Dolfijn).“

“Young local bar in the Brugse Poort, an old working class district in the northwest of Ghent, located more or less opposite Café Congé on the same square. Named after “Columbo”, the famous detective series from the seventies and eighties featuring Peter Falk; the late partner of the owner of the pub was a huge fan of this series, hence this tribute. Said owner is Peter Van Wiele, a former teacher – and member of the Ghent beer club, which explains why I reckoned this place deserves a mention on a beer and beer pub reviewers’ website; apart from the Belgian classics (Rochefort and so on), there is a rotating menu of mostly ‘classic’ craft beers available, though going in and finding out what is available on tap or bottled is probably the only way to know which ones (I have seen Alvinne, Aecht Schlenkerla, Abbaye des Rocs to name a few). Absurdist in nature (hence the “hotel” designation as well), the place attracts people connected to the Ghent beer club (organizing tasting events every now and then) but also locals, who in this particular neighbourhood can be quite, well, ‘colourful’ (local crooner Danny King springs to mind, for example). This often intriguing ‘mêlée’ of patrons is one of the things that make this bar so charming, along with its surreal humour (such as the election of the “worst beer in the world”) and cosy brown café interior with lots of paraphernalia, including a piano and – not kidding – a coffin. I think Hotel Columbo, though nowhere near a tickers’ heaven, is a worthy and colourful addition to the pub scene in a neighbourhood that has only recently embraced the ‘better beer pub’ – combine this one with nearby Ganzerik and Café Congé as well as Redding, and, as I have stated here before, you will have enjoyed local craft beer in a part of Ghent very few – if any – tourists ever visit.“

“This was our last day in Ghent, limited time to visit this bar, we made it here shortly after opening time. “Going with the family on a tour through Belgium, in Ghent my daughter said this had to be be the stop. Yes, we did the shoe business and actually had fun with it, good photo opportunity. The menu has a lot of beers listed and I told the server I wanted a quad not available in the states, he said he would take care of me. A Straffe Hendrik quadruple was brought to me, geez, I’ve had this beer a half dozen times at least and I also have a SH tulip glass bought on our last trip in Bruges four years ago. It is all okay. We had a good time here, my adult kids were entertained and we are talking about coming back tomorrow. And then, yes, we returned the next day. Had the dark brew in the shoe- beer challenge before doing the blonde beer again, same set-up. We had a fine time, the new server was gracious and I upped the score a bit“

Edel Rot (Bar)
BELFORTSTRAAT 6
“Founded by a couple of wine lovers as a mobile wine bar during the Gentse Feesten (a yearly city festival in Ghent) and later consolidated as a wine shop and bar in Steendam, Edel Rot moved to a new location in Belfortstraat (on the other side of St. Jacobs) in the summer of 2022 and in that process extended their menu into craft beer and other artisanal products including food, whilst specializing in natural wines. The location they currently occupy is a former coffee bar (Huize Colette) and is used both as a shop and a bar, with, if the weather allows for it, terrace outside, right across the magnificent city hall. Easy to combine with the nearby city brewery, this place offers a nice selection of primarily Belgian craft beers in the heart of the city, including some less obvious geuzes (Boerenerf, Cuvée Armand & Gaston), Alvinne, Verzet, Leite and so on, but be sure to ask for suggestions too as sometimes special bottles come in which are not shown on the menu (an Antidoot cider in our case, recommended by the waitress, whom I remembered from the beer scene years before). Nice vibe too, relaxed atmosphere and combining an old school arrangement with an arty touch. Really loved this place and will surely return – this may even become a local for me.“

“Gorgeous brown bar interior but upkept, modern almost looking in a great way with some history apparently. Friendly service, great atmosphere. Some small surprises on the menu & amazingly La Rulles on tap which I have never seen before in Flanders. Owner informed us that La Rulles is only brewery that gets to use Orval yeast which isn’t exactly true, they haven’t gotten Orval yeast in over a decade but did originally, I believe Gengoulf also uses Orval yeast. Doesn’t matter, awesome chill place with some lovely beers from De La Senne etc.“

“Primarily a wine place. We took place outside, very friendly service, beer selection is more interesting than a lot of beer bars with De Ranke, Verzet, De La Senne etc. Dok beer brewed for them on tap which was best Dok beer I have had so far. Limited bottles of Druug, Eylenbosch etc. also available. Druug cider on tap in wine sizes. Tried the picled radish & deepfried oystermushroom both of which were beyond expectation and really good. They also had the option to get Verzet pilsner with tepache & chili which was awesome. Really cool products, quality, very tasty food, awesome place, will definitely return.“

Really good location, relaxing, okay price. Fridge with cans and bottles, Redor pils, Stroom beer, Surrealist one (older bottle),… A few less obvious choices. Slightly eccentric service in a fun way. “Located in the old building of Brouwbar but with more space inside now that there is no longer brewing equipment inside. A popular street with lots of horeca, this place is mean to cater to the more casual drinker. Tap is virtually all Dok plut a cider from Druug, last of Brouwbar, 1 wine, 3 lemonades and water. Got an Oud Bruin made for the opening of this location. Okay prices, friendly service, nice brand-new hipster interior, wine selection available and apparently a choice of special 750 ml. bottles but didn’t investigate that. Definitely worth a stop and a beer, wonder how the place will evolve.“

“Located near the Saint Nicholas Church, plenty of tourists about no doubt, Van Steenberge run bar. We sat on the terrace, first thing you notice, the music is loud and has the feel of a British seaside resort, too loud outside even, inside must be dreadful. Brick and shiny black plastic interior, vaguely modern and artificial. Menu is unsurprisingly heavy on Van Steenberge with 30 taps, some house beers and specials which mean nothing given the breweries notorious rebranding, relabeling etc. Everything is sweet and boozy, Van Steenberge beers but also Leffe, Stella Artois, the sweet Rodenbach beers, Delirium Tremens, Kasteel Rouge etc. Only one beer Oude Duiker breaks the mold, Gulden Draak has interesting glassware, 33 cl. Pours for most beers, tried the regular Gulden Draak and smoked version, both were an unholy mess as expected, worse than I remember. Service in person or order by QR. Bottled menu largely follows the line, few more decent beers like Orval. Charcuterie menu. About what you would expect from a Van Steenberge bar.“

“Located in a warehouse styled venue in a more residential neighborhood. Some tables and chairs in the middle of the setup, next to the tanks. Extremely friendly owner, chatted upon both visits. Quite passionate. 4 taps, a bit more in cans, they do lower ABV beers, more traditional USA styled craft, pretty solid West Coast IPA, Wheat, Kettle Sour. West Coast IPA was decent, kettle sour drank well, some beers needed a bit more tweaking. Good prices, comfy to sit, friendly and enthusiastic owner, no brewing errors, easy to drink, stayed longer than intended on both visits. Definity a great addition to Gent.“

BEGIJNENGRACHT 34
“Another of these new local pubs in Ghent, this one located in the Begijnhof quarter (in between the Brugse Poort quarter and Prinsenhof, and named after the old beguinage that covered this part of the city from the 13th till the 19th century). Visited on a Saturday evening – not the best time of the week if you want to avoid loud crowds of drunk young people I guess, but I can take a beating. Due to the narrowness of the building, the place gets clogged with people quite easily, and finding a place to sit down was not self-evident – but this was made up for by the friendly and enthusiastic proprietor and his choice of beers, a very personal one which surprisingly includes a selection from the Brussels ‘nouvelle vague’ (Ermitage, No Science) and large bottles of geuze, including the justly famed black-labelled Girardin as well as Cantillon. Clearly this guy knows a thing or two about craft beer and this for me is sufficient reason to check it out every now and then, probably in combination with the four current (admittedly still mildly) craft-oriented pubs in the adjacent Brugse Poort quarter, namely De Redding, Café Congé, Hotel Columbo and Ganzerik, the latter in the Rooigem neighbourhood. Before all these young places existed, I could never have imagined that a pub crawl from Rooigem through Brugse Poort to Begijnhof (or the other way around) could ever actually become interesting for a beer lover like me…“

“New local pub in the Brugse Poort, an old working-class district in the northwest of Ghent; located in the very beginning of this quarter (as seen from the city centre), it is about an half-hour walk from the historical heart of Ghent. Formerly a kebab shop, the couple who opened this pub are both experienced in the hospitality business despite their young age, and it shows. Good vibes, a cosy and still sufficiently spacious atmosphere, friendly welcoming – and, something I need to focus on with regard to this website of course, a choice of beers carefully treading into local craft beer territory, with even draught Boon lambic being available at the time I visited. Other beers here include a few Dok, Verzet and Stroom brews (unsurprisingly – these brands are the ruling hipster beer brands of Ghent nowadays) and the much less obvious Barfight, a strong stout by Hofbrouwerijke in the province of Antwerp. It remains to be seen how this young pub will evolve and doubtlessly these young owners still have a lot of room to learn about craft beer, but for me it is an important addition to a quarter of the city not associated with craft beer (though Café Congé and the beloved Hotel Columbo, both at Fonteineplein about one kilometer further up north, already did the pioneering work, I guess). Worth a visit if you have seen enough of the fixed names in the city centre: combine this one with Ganzerik, Hotel Columbo, Café Congé and Dolfijn in the nearby Begijnhof quarter and you will have drunk beer in a string of enjoyable local cafés no tourist knows about, completely off the beaten track.“

“Visited September 2022.

Next one please!“

“Visited September 2022. Next one please!“

“The taproom of the one but newest brewery in Ghent (the other being Stadsbrouwerij Artevelde, but there is no actual brewing there yet at the time of writing this review), located in the Heirnis quarter in the southeast of the city, a bit off the beaten track for tourists I suppose, but not too long a walk from either the transport hub of Ghent Zuid (about a quarter of an hour) or Dampoort station (even slightly less than a quarter of an hour). Industrial feel, basically a warehouse looking like a garage at the streetside, ‘deep’ and more spacious than it may seem at first sight; a tap is installed to the left with wooden benches in front of it, adorned with little houseplants and things like that to – subtly – create a more cozy atmosphere… Not unpleasant, in all, and obviously the right place to go if you want to taste all the Stroom beers including some locally oriented or limited and experimental brews (such as Schol, created for the adjacent St. Macharius quarter). Relaxed atmosphere, and, when new beers avail, a place I certainly intend to pop in every now and then.“

“A very nice classical Belgian pub with good service and great selection. The best pub in Gent by far.“

“Overpriced for no real good reason. Decent enough beers, but still was nothing special to justify the price.“

“Visited October 2022. Industrial look. Big patio. 30 taps and an excellent food (probably one of the best pork chops I have ever had). Service was just OK, but again we were late. Beers was good. Flights available and reasonable price. Next one please!“

“Visited on a rainy midweek fall night with a good crowd in the pub. A small number of taps that were standards and small brewers and huge almost daunting bottle list. Service was you order at bar they bring to table.“
