52 /100 New Cross House (Bar) 316 NEW CROSS RD The new improved pub in the premises of what used to be the Goldsmith's Tavern, the two couldn't be more different with the former being a dive bar with plenty of character. This is now a much plusher option, although the beer range is nothing to make a beeline for. |
90 /100 Shirker's Rest (Bar) 9 LEWISHAM WAY Pop up style bar in an old shop. Simple set up with a shop front and some outside tables. Line up is always outstanding with 7 keg lines of the UK's best breweries, but for me it's the cask that's king here. 4 cask taps and always in banging form... Anspach & Hobday London Bitter is a regular but expect some cask bangers from top UK breweries such as Thornbridge Jaipur DDH, Redwillow, Cloudwater, plus some of London's more interesting offerings... recently did Dog's Grandad Black IPA on tap, Gipsy Hill tap takeover and Peckham stuff too. |
70 /100 Royal Albert (Bar) 460 NEW CROSS ROAD Spacious traditional pub on a main road in Deptford. Wooden flooring and comfortable sofas but the odd bit of furniture is a bit careworn. Beer is mostly pales, mostly London, mostly sessionable. Three cask and about six keg, including several Portobello, some Siren, Twickenham, Partizan, Mondo. Nothing you can’t get elsewhere but a good place to get several beers in the area (good for a shire-dweller like me). Maybe the loo could do with a spruce up but that’s being picky. Worth popping in. |
82 /100 Royal Albert (Bar) 460 NEW CROSS ROAD I love this boozer: it's so comfortable and lived in. Beer choice is OK, with a couple of standard keg choices and some great local cask, including 3 Volden. I love New Cross and I love Deptford - I just wish it wasn't chucking it down, so I could have a longer and less soggy look around. |
70 /100 Royal Albert (Bar) 460 NEW CROSS ROAD Good local pub in New Cross, London with reasonable selection of beers on cask, keg & bottles in the fridge, plus a cider on draught. Crowded when visited on a Sunday evening with a modern Jazz band playing, some picnic tables out front providing more space. |
60 /100 New Cross House (Bar) 316 NEW CROSS RD Solid if unspectacular. The pizza is pretty good. Worth a visit if you’r passing through. |
68 /100 Royal Albert (Bar) 460 NEW CROSS ROAD Having added it all up i think my score seems a bit harsh as i really like it here.
Nothing out of the ordinary in beer selection terms is probably its biggest let down, but they make an effort to rotate the casks lines regularly. They also usually have on 5 points pale ale and a beer from the Wlid brewery co. Nice if you are around the area. |
74 /100 Royal Albert (Bar) 460 NEW CROSS ROAD A pretty decent boozer. Nice selection of casks, including some local breweries. Good range of bottles with stuff like Kernel and Brew By Numbers on offer. OK prices. Friendly staff. They do food here and have a full menu (I think). Lots of seating including a few couches. Pretty close to the train station so relatively easy to reach. Worth a visit if you are in the area but probably not worth seeking out.. |
66 /100 New Cross House (Bar) 316 NEW CROSS RD New Cross House is located a minutes walk from the train station. The pub was established in 1600 and retains some original features (tile work etc) even though it has quite a modern feel to it. There are 4 cask ales on offer, which included 2x Florence beers on my visit. They also have a large array of keg taps with London Fields offerings being the best of the bunch. Perhaps the beer choice could be a bit more exciting, but it’s not bad. A solid pub and worth a visit if you are in the area. |
68 /100 Allotment (Grocery Store) 318 NEW CROSS RD, NEW CROSS The Allotment is a small premium food & beverage store, just a stone’s throw away from New Cross Gate Station. As the beer selection goes it is small, but well chosen. They have Kernel, Partizan, Buxton, Weird Beard and such like. They also have plenty of nice food and wine. Worth stopping past if you are in the area. |
