66 /100 Castle Inn Sandown (Bar) 12 FITZROY STREET I really enjoyed my time here
Nice friendly pub. Decent tap/cask selection and bottle/can selection
Me, as a foreigner, got some ticks
Not very hard to find. 5 min walk upwards from the beach
Also a fine patio at the back

60 /100 Flanagans (Bar) 7 PIER STREET Nice pub with a fine location
Especially from the patio. A cold beer in the sun while you watch all the lovely ladies at the beach
Quite decent tap selection. Also with some local brew from the island

60 /100 Flanagans (Bar) 7 PIER STREET Independently owned bar which essentially like a nice Spoons. Overlooks the sea. Bog standard but well-priced food. On to the beer... they do have two Goddards beers on cask and couple in the fridge. Otherwise 99% macro including a couple of Brewdog and Meantime beers. But no ticks. What summed up the place was when a couple of guys walked in and the barman said, "Welcome, we've got a couple of local ales here" and was told that they just wanted lager. But staff were very friendly and it was the only place that evening not doing bookings. |
68 /100 105 HIGH STREET Nice to see someone going for craft in Sandown. Be warned... you may buy their beers and actually end up with Goddards beers as the collab together and then release the beers under different names. Annoying if like me you then ended up with duplicates. In fact of the 8 or so beers that were on, four were Goddards, one was their own and then there was an Ilkley beer. Whatever else was on I'd had before. Helpful chatty staff who gave me tasters, although that was on my return visit so I had already had the beers but decided it was rude to refuse. Good luck to them. I'd certainly be a regular if I was a local. |
60 /100 Castle Inn Sandown (Bar) 12 FITZROY STREET So this is a freehouse and billed as the #1 real ale destination in Sandown... but that's because they have 6 casks on. You get the one local beer from Goddards Fuggle Dee-Dum and Andwell Gold (had). Then two widely available casks in Hobgoblin Gold and HSB. The really boring guest ales were Abbott and a beer rebadged as Castle Inn Ale which turned out to be Butcombe Best. So no ticks for me on cask or from the macro kegs. In the fridge were two more Goddards beers I had or bought. Therefore my sole tick was bottled Spitfire. The pub itself is attractive and built from local stone. Inside we have a trad English pub. No food served. The other customers seemed to be locals. Anyway a nice pub but not one you're likely to get a tick in. |
88 /100 105 HIGH STREET Visited 10/10/2020. Situated at the edge of Sandown high street which is undergoing an attempt at regeneration, of which B&S opening is part. Spent the weekend based in Sandown. Booked a 3 hour time slot for a table at their beer festival. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. It's run by cracking people. Super friendly atmosphere. They had a couple of their own beers and around 8-10 guests. Plus a bottle fridge and some rare local ciders. Ended up over-running our time slot but were able to stay longer. Highly recommended, hope it thrives after covid and hope to go back. |
