“A large nice brewpub that seems to be a restaraunt first. Well decorated and upscale with an old money vibe. Service was great, friendly and prompt. Selection was decent and a full tasting flight is available. Beer isn’t terribly exciting, but not bad. Food is excellent. I would come for a meal and just happen to tick some beer.“

“Bear themed brewpub. One of the best brewpub burgers I’ve had in a long time. Beer was decent for a brewpub. Flights available.“

“Visited later evening on a Thursday. Located in the same strip mall as The Brass Tap, right off the Sawgrass Expressway and University. The beer selection is located in back, and features an average assortment of local and national craft brands. There is also a rack of larger format bottles available near the cooler. Better selection than a Whole Foods or a Publix, though less than what you would find at a Total Wine. No singles or mix a six.

64 = ★★ (Just ok)

I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Visited for pizza carryout and a beer on a Thursday. 8 draft beers, half of which were locals, including a Funky Buddha beer made just for Anthony’s. Layout is the same as other Anthony’s, it’s a nicer pizza place with a smaller bar tucked in the corner. Service was great, very friendly and knowledgeable on the beers they had.

64 = ★★ (Just ok)

I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Much like the Pompano Location but and great place to sample craft beer with their own hand picked Funky Buddha beers and many others. Both food and service are excellent.“

“A very interesting pub. Nice outdoor area. Taps taps and more taps. Nothing super crazy and few international but still a huge selection. Staff is nice and busy. Nice place for sports and a group.“

“Visited for dinner on a Wednesday night. Last time I was in Coral Springs 3 or so months ago, this was under construction so must have opened recently. Shiny new building with a large outdoor patio area and big bar and restaurant area. I sat at the bar and had a four beer taster as well as a pizza. The beers were pretty boring and the pizza was average. Service was attentive, and took time to talk about the beers and give recommendations. They have 12-13 house brews on tap and 21 guest drafts as well as a bunch of Belgian bottles. Music was rock, and it was loud. This is the first BJs I have been to, and can’t say I will be rushing to go to any others.

64 = ★★ (Just ok)

“A beautifully decorated brewpub with wooden ceiling, brick walls, very warm and pleasing, good service, top notch food, beers are below average (except the IPA and DIPA). Sampler flight 8 X 5 on for 8$.“

“The Microbrews are excellent. Great place to eat. My wife does not drink beer and she even likes Big Bear. I’ve yet to take the microbrewery tour, but it’s on my list.“

“Great brewpub. Sure they tailor to the everyday crowd but the place is nice and clean everywhere. Servers a very polite and informative even if it sounds scripted. Their beers on tap everyday are solid. You have to try the seasonals and specials they are always top notch. Now they even have some guest taps. Food is outstanding, try the pretzel encrusted chicken and the beer cheese soup. A little pricey but worth it.“

“A nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to visit it...again. Ambiance is the best this place has to offer--dimly lit, nicely furnished, it feels classy. Service is good. Food? I ordered a salad with a price tag of $14. For that price, I was expecting a delicious, sumptuous mountain of healthy goodness on a plate. What I got was a mediocre, small salad that should have listed for $4.99 as a appetizer. Beer selection was uninspired, middle of the road offerings--solid, but nothing that knocked my socks off.“

“Small, but decent selection of US micros and craft. Really not much in terms of local FL / SE beers, and they don’t single bottles, unless that is the normal format. It was near where I was staying, so at least they had something.

58 = ★½ (Local place tickers only)

“Visited a bit later in the evening on Wednesday in June. Brewpub in a new strip mall along a busy stretch in Coral Springs. Despite the new exterior, they go for the upscale dark wood and leather feel of a steakhouse or nicer tavern. The first thing I noticed was the heavy hickory odor, seems apparent they have a wood fired stove. Food smelled and looked good, though I didn’t have time to try any. The beer range offered during my visit was pretty unimaginative, though they appear to rotate a fair number of beers. The Pale Ale was really fresh and quite nice, they aslo do 5 ounce samples of any of their beers, which I also liked. Service was pretty aloof, but not necessarily rude. Overall, nice enough to stop by if you are in the area.

64 = ★★ (Just ok)

“This is a nice place, Service was normal, staff knows litte about beer but I was there in the daytime and there was little going on. There was only a young lady at the bar. The beers are lacking for sure but it was a nice visit.“

“Pretty classy looking from the outside and I don’t know if it was the red leather booths but I felt that I was in some sort of diner. Nice ambiance. Beer was very solid as was the food, but it is a tad more pricey than standard pub fare, however the quality was also better than standard pub fare. Service was exceptionally cheery, prompt and just left a great experience overall. Not too many places like this in the area, so its worth a stop or two here.“

“Walk in and it looks upscale, but pretty down-to-earth feel. Some menu items are a bit pricey, but pretty good overall. As a vegetarian, there is plenty to eat- the baby green salad with vanilla vinegrette was interesting. I got the sampler- the English-Style Brown, Dubbel, and the Imp Stout were the most interesting. Lunch was pretty good, and the beers were unique and worth the stop. It was a Sunday, and the waiter knew next to nothing about the beer without the brewer there to assist. Ambiance seems a bit upscale, as do some of the menu prices, but then again, this is South Florida, and the three beers make for a good time. They do blueberry the Blueberry ale though.“

“It’s not that bad of a place. The beer selection didn’t really blow me away, they have the typical selections of a stout, a IPA, etc. The food wasn’t that bad, the chicken and the dip was pretty good. Not out of this world but worth a try.“

“Big Bear stood out physically, in this mall of business, and was an interesting stop neot far from Fort Lauderdale or Boca Raton. A carved out bear area was appreciated, with generous number of seats and well lit up. There were many restaurant tables all about, and I believe a second floor for parties, etc. Big tanks, a reasonably good selection. The mission of coming here was for the double IPA that was Jack Daniels barrel aged, and that mission was accomplished. The remaining beers were passable to mediocre Service was genuine and there was root beer on tap.Service was downright friendly, university nearby may have helped. Beers served way too cold, so I made sure to get a non-frosted mug.“

“Pretty nice place with full on restaurant look and feel. It was fun looking over their brew house and serving area while waiting a half and hour or so for a table. Pretty long run from the bright tanks to the taps. Food was solid with big portions and the beer seemed to be a little more miss than hit. They had eight house brews and three of them were very nice.“

“Food ok but pricey. Typical American ice cream parlor flavore Beers were middle to very low of the road. They change them too often to really perfect them. Service lacked as well even when place is not full. How can anyone take a beer seriously that is called Blueberry?“

“Big Bear makes some good brews and some that arent so great. The offer a 8 beer sampler...4 oz pours...for a total of $8...great deal. The service is usually pretty good and you HAVE to try the pretzel encrusted chicken. Best dish on the menu.“

“In a strip mall but not so nasty because Coral Springs retains an aura of pleasantness. Brewmaster’s name is printed on the door, indicating some appreciation and pride. Likewise, the beers are described well on the menu and Southern Brewing News is available here. The new seasonal pils is 40IBUs, or so says the menu, and was impressive as is the Pale. Large patio outside. Decent grub, good service. Worth the trek.“

“Strip mall brewpub in the outer suburbs of glorious Broward County, but worth the trek. First thing I see when I walk in is the Southern Brewing News - I like that. The beers have the predictable bland lineup, with a regular pale and dubbel, plus three seasonals, for a total of 8. The Hibernation Pale is especially good - it has to rank as one of the top beers in the state. Food is made from scratch, a nice touch, and the Cajun red bean soup was solid. The seasonal pilsner was good, even the blueberry ale was good for the type. I look forward to checking in every now and again.“

“A good drive from Miami area, but still easy to find from the street. They offer a sampler with 8 beers. I was only able to get 7. Inside is dark and intimate seating. All of the brewing vessels are visible at the entrance. Beautiful place, good food, and very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff.“

“Great little brewpub. The brews are all drinkable, with some being quite good (especially their Hibernation Pale Ale and the bourbon barrel aged double IPA). They also brew an excellent root beer - something I am always happy to find at a good brewpub. Service has always been superb and food is great too, especially their Beer Meunster soup. Atmosphere is very relaxed - I have always end up having great conversations with people I meet there. Definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the Lauderdale area.“

“They don’t have much of a selection due to limited space and lack of attention to the beer as opposed to wine and cheese, both of which are run by the same department. Still, as with most Whole Foods stores, there are enough gems to make it a worthwhile trip especially for the area. Orval, Abbaye de Rocs, Aventinus, and others.“

“The very dark yet classy interior is no match for the terrace, even though the latter overlooks the parking lot. The weather is so nice in Florida, a few well-crafted pints in the warm shade cannot be frowned upon. They have 3 seasonals and 5 regulars, styles stretching out from American to Belgian to German. In their 5 regulars, the Hibernation Pale Ale is by far my favorite. So far, we have never had a full meal here, but we have tried the spinach and cheese tortilla dip as well as the Brie pillow, and loved both as the huge and filling appetizers they are. Service was prompt, friendly, and professional both times I’ve been. Although there haven’t been any homeruns in the beer range so far, I have to say I was thoroughly satisfied with my two visits so far (March 2007 and January 2008).“

“I really enjoyed my experience here. Tried their entire, solid line-up of beers. The seared tuna made for an excellent, generously portioned appetizer. Ordered half a chicken with black (or red?) beans and rice. Wonderful! Great, fun atmosphere! The place is nicely put-together and the beer, as stated, although not world-class, is solid. Not too far from the Sawgrass Mall... for those who like to shop.“

“Very nicely decorated, upscale, but cozy with intimate booth seating and very toned down lighting. I didn’t eat, but the beer was pretty decent and the brewmaster, Matt was a very nice guy. The Dubbel was my favorite, but the Brown Ale was fairly decent. There was a bock, dry-hopped cask IPA, Pale Ale and a few others as well. Fairly solid if not outstanding brews. Fairly expansive lineup with about 9 beers in total.“

“While they have a fair amount of US microbrews (nothing local though) and a handfu of imports, the rating cannot be anything but low at a place refusing to sell singles. The selection here is a littl better than atthe Plantation location.“

“Having spent 12hrs working outdoors in mid-August I probably wasn’t too hard to impress when entering, but I rellay enjoyed my visit. Of the real brewpubs in South Florida this is the one I liked the best. While the lighter beers fialed to impress the more bold and brash ones were spot on, as was the servise.“

“There is a dearth of good brewpubs in South Florida.. This is a decent stop off I-95 or if you’re in the Ft. Lauderdale vicinity. It was nice and dark and cool on a very hot and muggy afternoon in June. The beer is OK - not the greatest, not too bad. We had the fish and chips, which came with a good sauce, and which were nice and fresh. Food prices are a bit high, for what they are. Big Bear has won a few medals, but when you’re competing in Florida, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel...“
