COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Experimentation doesn’t mean new. With our Gruit, the latest Lips of Faith release, it’s all about revisiting the ancient craft of bittering with herb mixtures, not hops. In here horehound, bog myrtle, yarrow, wormwood and elderflowers get together with rich malts to create a bitter, dry, velvet-like sweetness worth revering.

Pours a subdued orangish yellow. Aromas of semi-sweet floral, smoke, and earthy notes. Flavor is honey like with a dandelion like floral tart. Not to bad, but I expected more.

22 oz bomber. Pours a hazy golden color and topped by a small layer of off white foam that settles quickly to a thin film and leaves scant lines of lace. The aroma shows notes of citrus fruit with peach and grapefruit showing followed by herbs and spices with some floral notes of lavender and elder flower to go with some sweet pale and wheat malts. The flavor follows suit with the sweet pale malts and spices to go with the herbs and floral notes from the elder flowers and lavender. Moderately sweet with low bitterness to go with the yeasty esters and slightly dry finish. Interesting beer with the use of the different ingredients, but not something I could drink that much of. Still worth a try though.

On tap at JL Beers, Fargo. I’m not sure I’ve had a gruit before - this may be the first one. Until it gets its own style on ratebeer I guess I’ll never know :) Earthy and dank but not a intense sour like some other styles. Herbal and earthy. Not bad. Unique.

Visual: Pours clear golden yellow with a med-large super foamy lasting head, very stick lacing, clusters of steady streams. Nose: peach-apricot-apple fruity. (lvl-5)-pungency Attack: crisp-fruity, foamy feel Mid-palate: off-dry (lvl-2)-sweetness, light tangy, (MAIN) red apple, banana wheat malt, subtle bitterness Finish: light spicy, mild lemony dry finish. Summary: Very fruity, low bitterness, easy-drinking. Can’t really distinguish advertised bittering agents, mostly wheat malt comes through.

Bottle. I really like beers that brew outside the box. This one was pretty good. Golden in color with a medium, two finger head, Aroma was slightly fruit with the herbs. Taste was also fruity with herbs taking upfront flavor.

Poured a lightly hazy light amber with an off white head. Aroma of liquorice and toffee, biscuit malt. Medium body, flavour is heavily sweet, lightly bitter, moderately spicy. Not particularly well balanced.

Pours a hazy golden. Totally different bittering and herbal notes without the hops, but still works. This one makes you think. Somewhat bready and floral and bit odd at the finish. Subtle saison notes. Interesting, yet tasty.

Bottle. Sweet mango, spicy floral, and bready-yeasty aroma - as it warmed a cinnamon type note developed. Golden yellow with a small white head. Sweet fruity, bready malt, yeast, and bitter herbal flavor with a slightly saccharine type bitterness in the finish. Light body, moderate carbonation.
