COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

Torpedo Pilsner is a hop-forward take on the crisp classic lager. We and the folks at Firestone Walker share a passion for New Zealand hop varietals, so we loaded our legendary Hop Torpedo with southern hemisphere hops for a fruity, floral twist on the pilsner style.

Just down the road from us in California’s Central Coast wine country, this rock star brewery has earned “Mid-size Brewery of the Year” at the World Beer Cup four times. Like us, Firestone is passionate about hops. Their skill with the ingredient shines in their Pale Series and elsewhere in a long beer lineup driven by a premier brewing team.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2019 A very good representation of the style....though nothing really stands out. Pilsners are hard for me to rate high. I've had a few slightly maltier than this that I really enjoy. The style just seems a little pale and bland. Good earthly and grassy flavors, just not as hoppy as I expected from the label.

July 30th, 2014 - Like summers long past, I am steeped in summer camp culture without actually attending summer camp, this time through the projecting power of Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp. I love these boxes. They explore, innovate and provide enough volume for a party, or a slow month of sipping bottle-by-bottle. And I start the new season’s batch with the Torpedo Pilsener. Light straw in color, it is pale, as if frightened or traumatized by the experience of the pour, which pushes up a low, mottled head, not unlike apple juice. The smell is deep and sweet, with a little corn, but mostly that intense star that comes from pushing one’s head into a bin of crystal malt and inhaling. The body is sudsy, semi-sweet up front, and then revs up a little to deliver a clear, crystal malt and mineral water flavor, which lasts all the way through to the aftertaste. It is a good start to the box, and a nice way to finish July.

12 oz bottle from old notes. Pours a hazy golden color and topped by a small head of off white foam that settles quickly into a thin film. The aroma shows notes of citrus fruit, floral and grassy hops, clean grains, and a bready and biscuit malt backbone. The flavor follows suit with a touch of citrus, clean grains, yeast, and biscuit malts with floral and grassy hop bitterness on the back end. Medium bodied with ample carbonation that leads to a clean, dry, and bitter finish. Solid Pilsner and another solid offering from the pack.

(Bottle, 0.355 l, at laitis, 20150613, thanks) The beer poured pale golden and nearly clear. Its head was small and white. Aroma had grass and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were grass, malts, grain and bittterness. Aftertate was hoppy and btiter. A harsh hoppy lager.

12 oz bottle served in a tulip. Pours hazy dark straw yellow with medium creamy white head. Aroma is light malt with big fresh lemon notes on the back. Taste is clean light malt, rich wheat-like notes, then dry herbaceous peppery hop flavors on the finish. Pretty much as advertised, a rich and hoppy take on the lager. Nice.

355ml bottle @laiti’s, thanks. Hazy orange color. Small size, white head, stays. Fruity, citrus, straw and malts in aroma. Grainy, some grassy elements, sweetish taste. Soft plus carbonation. It’s something.

355ml bottle - thanks VastActiv!
Fruity sweet perfumey hop aroma. Pale, brief head. Simple sweet malty body. Flat palate, a bit slick. Pretty dull lager. You can tell it’s made from some of the right ingredients for beer though. But definitely not an example of a crisp style of beer.

Grassy straw and hops in both flavor and aroma. Light and refreshing for a hot day.
