Bottle @ home. Almost clear, deep brown body under a fine tan head. Aroma has roasted malt, bread, caramel and Belgium yeast. Taste is distinct malty, medium roasted, brown sugar, Belgium yeast and slightly warming, mild alcohol. Balanced body with the same aftertaste. I’m always impressed how these Belgium beers can be made at this alcohol strength without feeling boozy at all. Not much going on here really, but still a honest, tasty and well made strong ale. Must be appreciated in these pastry adjuncts times.

Bottle @ home. Unclear golden body under a huge, foamy white head. Aroma has pale malt, hint of citric fruit and spicy yeast. Taste has more of a classic triple than honey beer. There is sweet pale malt, white sugar, spicy yeast, esters, some citric fruit and then just a gentle touch of honey. Not bad, I think I prefer the modest honey flavor in this kind of beer, the honey is more like another spicy thing to the triple. Balanced body and a bit moderate in aftertaste. Decent.

(music pairing : Last days of Eden, album Butterflies .. bien vu ..)

As Stout'n Tseut 7.5%. Black with stable creamy head. There's a lemonade sharp, sour element to this which is a big defect and a shame. Would like to try an unspoiled batch.

Bottle from Geers. Clear dark golden, thinning, white head. Aroma of ripe apple, apricot, banana, white bread, grain, sugar. Taste has sweet red apple, apricot & melon, white bready & yeasty body, bit sugary, spicy phenolic edge. Grassy hoppy finish in a 'wet' way, more spices & ripe fruit & warming jenever-like alcohol. Medium body, slick-sticky texture, average carbonation. Don't care too much about these beers anymore.

Den Tseut Cuvée van 't Virken
Strong ale by Huisbrouwerij Den Tseut, aged on oak chips - and raisins. Comes from a 75 cl bottle with crown cap and neckfoil, bought at De Hopduvel in Ghent. Slow gusher, but manageable. Eggshell-white, bit irregular, frothy and pillowy, tightly papery lacing head on a lightly hazy deep orangey-amber beer with enthusiastic sparkling throughout, turning into a misty, slightly brownish-tinged amber with sediment. Aroma of toasted peanuts, dried rosemary, dried apple peel, brandy, indeed old oak wood, orange peel, brown soap, young 'jenever', bitter tree leaves, subtle hints of pan-fried potatoes, toasted pumpkin seeds, roasted carrots, persimmon, multi-grain bread crust, wood glue, black radish peel, plastic. Fruity, spritzy onset, lively carbonated with minerally effects, hints of peach, red apple, persimmon and some slight bubblegummy banana; full, soft mouthfeel, a bit vinous from the considerable alcohol level. Soggy toast-, rusk- and bread crust-like maltiness with a peanutty edge as well as a light streak of caramel but not much residual sweetness, rather dryish in fact, with a phenolic spicy effect in the end distracting a bit from the oak chips and the raisins (the latter only being noticeable in a very 'distorted' way that I would never recognize as such - they do not even add sweetness, only a rather frugal dried fruit accent). A somewhat wry yeast bitterness is highlighted less by the oak effect (though woody tannins are present) and more by a heating, strong, 'jenever'- to brandy-like alcohol effect in the end, with rather wry impressions of old potato peel, nutmeg, dried bitter herbs and even plastic lingering, distracting from the nevertheless elegant vanilla-like scent provided retronasally by the oak chips. Rather crude, boozy and unrefined, clearly an attempt at a more 'up-market' luxury beer, but in need of a lot of finetuning, if e.g. recent editions of Dolle's Stille Nacht Special Reserva or even Bush Prestige are to be seen as leading examples in this particular segment of 'wood-aged' Belgian style barleywines. Honorable attempt, but not worth its price tag - yet.

Triple ennuyeuse.

Den Tseut Stout
Den Tseut's first attempt at a non-Belgian beer style, tasted at Maldegems Bierfestival in spring; unfortunately I seem to have lost my notes, so this one is from sheer memory. Mousy, medium thick, regular, lacing, pale beige head on a black beer with thin mahogany edges. Aroma of roasted walnuts, coffee grounds, bitter chocolate, dried figs, tea, toasted brown bread, nutmeg, cloves, light bubblegum. Clean onset, fruity hints of fig and fried banana, medium fizz, slick and oily mouthfeel, tad bubblegummy, toasted-nutty, somewhat caramelly and bitter-chocolatey malt profile with a coffeeish roasted bitter finish, under which a sourish undertone runs; herbal and spicy hop bitterish notes in the end along with mild phenolic effects and lingering dark, bitter maltiness. This creation has apparently only been sold at a handful of beer festivals so far, but the brewery told me that they have intentions to further finetune this beer and eventually release it under another name - at which point this entry will become an alias. Frankly, I was not expecting Den Tseut to come up with a stout as clean and to the point as this one; a basic dry stout it is, opening possibilities for further elaborations. Well done and unexpected, I was pleasantly surprised by this un-Tseut-like beer and I hope to encounter it again in its final form; I would even recommend the brewer to further elaborate on it and create a bunch of different stouts based on this progenitor, that would certainly draw more attention to them from the beer geek community (if that is indeed what they are after by creating this beer).

One of Tseut’s tripels, apparently one I have missed so far, now sampled at Maldegems Bierfestival. Snow white, moussy, foamy, bit irregular and quickly opening, but edge-retaining head, misty apricot blonde robe with golden hue. Aroma of peach, banana, strong DMS (overcooked broccoli), cooked potato, raw turnip, dough, camomile, rainwater, minerals. Sweetish onset, light banana ester, notes of unripe pear and peach, quite harshly stinging carbonation; fluffy bready maltiness, bit cereally, with floral hoppiness in the finish adding light bitterness, but the DMS returns as well, much to my annoyance. Not Tseut’s best effort, neither technically nor conceptually – and completely redundant even within their own range. Why create yet another cliché blonde like this?

Volle body. Smaak: zoet, gebrande mout, honing, karamel, chocolade, tikje zoethout, bitter. Top.

De Werkmens
33cl bottle at the two-days folklore festival 'Het dorp van Ivan', Oosteeklo (2 IX 2018). This was the first try-out of De Werkmens. It is a beer brewed in honor of Ivan Heylen, a local singer who had a famous, nation-wide hit with 'De Werkmens' in 1973 ('The Blue Collar Man'). This beer is brewed 45 years after this song. At the same time, this probably is the last new beer from Den Tseut, also from Oosteeklo, just before the renovation and expansion of this smallscale company from home microbrewery to actual home brewery. Although rumours had it that this would be a canned beer, it was served straight from bottles. The appearance is quite startling and beautiful, with a yellow to dark brown coloured gloom adding a nice mystique to the brew, which is dark and slightly greasy as well. The body has a deliberate brown-black shade. The beer style hints a abbey dubbel or a caramelized amber brew. An interesting starting point. The execution is a bit more straightforward, I'm afraid. The nose has different brown sugar, sugar candy, and even liquorice notes. They all cover the malt grain odours. The mouthfeel is medium strong, corresponding to the 8 % ABV. A sweet tongue makes a first introduction, even overwhelming the overall taste. The sugar basis barges in, in an unnatural fashion. The chocolate and malts base is welcoming, though. The palate is somewhat fleshy, which is enjoyable, but never becomes oily. All in all, a nice good-drinking brew with some dull performances.
