3.2 Adler Brau Bucky Brau Barley Wine Bottle that is at least two years old and found while digging through my "cellar" and cost me $1.59 at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Served in my Stone RIS snifter: A muddy reddish brown color with a small frothy tan head that produced moderate lace. The aroma has lots of fruity esters, caramel malting, candi sugar and some spicy hops. An inviting nose and I got interested is what would follow...then came the taste... what is that? Starts with a quick dash of sugars and malt but then a surprising winey acidic nature pops up. Lot of oxidation in the flavors as well leading me to think of this as more English Old Ale than Barleywine. The finish is sort of peppery but really more papery and blends away to nothingness. Despite the negative comment, this is not really bad, just not expected. The feel is slightly sticky and more mellow than most of the genre. In the end, this is a forgettable beer but not regrettable. Friday, August 26, 2005

2.5 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Nothing offensive about the appearance, aroma, or palate. There’s a sour, brackish, astringent nastiness that made this one my first drain pour in a long while. Monday, April 25, 2005

2.2 Adler Brau Downtown Brown Ale Pours a thin white head over a hazy copper beer. Nose is pure canned apricots or peaches! Really weird. Taste is sweet like kit-made homebrew. Thin and slightly grassy hop character. Don’t like this at all. Friday, April 15, 2005

3.2 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Sweet, coffee smell. Malty and coffee hints but a little to sour. Good on the palate but ends quite fast. The sourness maskes the rest of flavors. Wednesday, March 9, 2005

3 Adler Brau Downtown Brown Ale Gots a wheat flavor for sure in it. Then comes with a nice but subtle nut flavor. Ends with a little coffee bite. Not your typical nut brown but it strives to be different. Thursday, March 3, 2005

1.6 Adler Brau ESB Dark straw color with a smaller white head. LIght malt and floor cleaner aromas. Flavors follow, unfortunately with the aromas. Bitter finish that just does not blend with anything. Friday, February 11, 2005

3.2 Adler Brau Pumpkin Spice Wow, these guys didn’t screw around with the spices on this one! Pumpkin pie in a glass for sure, just with a stronger nutmeg kick. The aroma is wonderful, but the flavor is a letdown because those same tasty spices are there but there’s nothing else to back ’em up! Sort of tastes like a bock with spices thrown in. Some roasty caramel malt and a more substantial mouthfeel would have hit the spot. My sample was bottled, purchaed in October from the Woodmans in Madison. Saturday, December 11, 2004

2.4 Adler Brau Oktoberfest My sample was bottled, purchaed in October from the Woodmans in Madison. Slightly hazy dark orage-brown body, hardly any head. Diesel-oily malts and pumpkin pie in the aroma. The flavor and palate both suck, there’s a biting astringency in the start of the flavor (along with the usual marzen malts) and some dry cardboard to round out the finish. This stuff makes me appreciate the New Glarus Staghorn I recently had even more! Saturday, December 11, 2004

2.8 Adler Brau Pub Pale Ale This seemed like an American Pale Ale with an underwhelming amount of hops. Body was fizzy orange/amber with little head. Slightly citrusy hop aroma, some bitterness, but little hop flavor which seemed like it should be there but wasn’t. Watery and without much of a body. It was a decent drink. Friday, December 3, 2004

3.1 Adler Brau Weiss This is one beer where the odd, Belgian-like yeast characteristics worked well. Reminded me more of a belgien wit than a german hefe. The body, however, wasn’t particularily great. Friday, December 3, 2004

2.4 Adler Brau Tailgate Amber Another odd beer, probably due to the yeast. Kinda bland, like a lot of their standard style beers. I don’t have much else to say other than that it was very average and boring. Friday, December 3, 2004

3.9 Adler Brau Pumpkin Spice A very good pumpkin beer. Most pumpkin beers have the spices at the front, but this really did have a squash flavor which was backed up by ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Smelled like a freshly-cooked pumpkin pie. One of their better beers (the Oktoberfest being the other really good one that I’ve tried). Friday, December 3, 2004

3.6 Adler Brau Oktoberfest The best beer I’ve tasted from Adler Brau. Unlike most of their other beers, this has flavor and body with some decent amounts of spices. A little lacking in the hops, IMO. Friday, December 3, 2004

2.7 Adler Brau Marquette Pilsner A very bland pilsener, but better than the "honey pilsner". This needs more Saaz! Friday, December 3, 2004

2.8 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Not a good stout but probably their most flavorful beer. Watery body. Coffee and bitter chocolate finish. Friday, December 3, 2004

2.2 Adler Brau Honey Pilsner Decent beer, but lacking any sort of spicy pilsener flavor. Rather bland and no body. Friday, December 3, 2004

3 Adler Brau Fox Classic River Ale Light, watery body but some decent hop flavors. Probably their hoppiest beer. I enjoyed drinking this beer. Friday, December 3, 2004

2.9 Adler Brau Eagle Lager This beer had some odd citrus and spice tones which I did not expect. This brewery does something weird with their yeast it seems, as everything has unexpected flavors. Pretty good for a plain old American-style lager. Friday, December 3, 2004

2.7 Adler Brau Downtown Brown Ale There was something off about the flavor. Not infected, but definitely something "wrong" -- an odd yeast strain, as others have suggested? This did not sit well with me. Friday, December 3, 2004

2.7 Adler Brau Classic Porter Odd color for a porter. Like a brown ale with some light coffee flavors; overall, lacks flavor. Friday, December 3, 2004

2.1 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Bottle: Opaque with fading fizzy tan head and little lace. The aroma has notes of coffee, toasted malts, oats, lactic sourness, earthy yeast ester and prune. The taste had some chocoalte and vanilla tones, lots of coffee on the finish but little else. The feel is way too watery for style. I’ll pass next time. Tuesday, August 31, 2004

3.5 Adler Brau Downtown Brown Ale Bottle. Creamy off-white head. Amber/reddish brown body. Hoppy aroma and taste with some nice caramel malt to compliment. I really like the hop character of this. Monday, July 19, 2004

3 Adler Brau Honey Pilsner Bottle. Pale yellow with a white head. Honey lemon aroma with some white wine and wheat. Nice wheaty honey taste. Not bad to drink on a hot day. Monday, July 19, 2004

1.6 Adler Brau Doppelbock 12 oz bottle. Bought this on a whim on my latest Wisconsin trip...store had only a few Adler Braus, I didn’t know much about them and hey it’s a Doppelbock. Of course, I hadn’t read the reviews. Dark cherrywood color, big lasting head. So far...nose unpleasant, bit soapy and sour with just some hints of dark fruit and malt, not good. Really odd flavor, vinous and cherry-like, as JPDISPSO mentions a bit more Belgian-style double than German-style bock...but in any case, sour and lacking in flavor, poorly balanced, overly yeasty and not drinkable. Bad, quite bad. Sunday, July 18, 2004

2.7 Adler Brau Bucky Brau Barley Wine Slightly murky fiery red body, no head. Aroma is fruity and sugary with some cherry, apricot, and pineapple. The flavor is bizarre; lots of pineapple juice (sweetened), heavily sweet malt, and hot alcohol. Where are the hops that other raters mention? The body is full and sticky. Horribly unbalanced in my opinion. Shame. Thursday, June 10, 2004

3 Adler Brau Winter Ale Dark brown color with very little head. Scent was a mixture of malt and alcohol, as was the taste. Appropriately thick. Alcohol taste was too pronounced, but other than that, not bad. Thursday, May 27, 2004

4.2 Adler Brau Pumpkin Spice On tap at GABF. This was my first pumpkin ale, and possibly still my favorite. Very pronounced cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. The brewer told me that he just added pumpkin pie spice and no actual pumpkin. If that’s the case, it actually works. Smooth balance to the spices. Tastes like you’re drinking a slice of pie. Monday, May 17, 2004

1.2 Adler Brau Marquette Pilsner Awful. May have been contaminated. Light amber color, acidic bite, taste of bad homebrew from a kit. Nothing close to a pilsner. Tuesday, May 11, 2004

2.8 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Extremely dark brown color resulting in a black body. Quite a bit of carbonation but not much head, just a wipsy coating. Simple but enjoyable chocolate-grainy aroma. Tastes like weak malty coffee with a bit of lemon squeezed in it. Dry, fruity finish. I was encouraged by this beer's nice aroma but the taste doesn't match. Saturday, February 28, 2004

3.4 Adler Brau Winter Ale A nice dark pouring beer. Taste like a combination of a pumpkin ale and a holiday brew. Interesting taste to say the least. That's one thing I will give Adler Brau, they do make some interesting tasting beers (however not always good). Sunday, February 15, 2004
Jedsbrew |
2.8 Adler Brau Fox Classic River Ale Copper colored with a minimal head, a grapefruit aroma with some cinnamon/ginger spiciness. Dry and a bit toasty, hoppy and malt stingy with a decent bitter finish. Bottled version, mediocre, but the restaurant downstairs from the brewery is worth a try if you're in Appleton IMO. Lots on tap. Monday, January 5, 2004

3.1 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Stout looking with a decent tan colored creamy head and a mild chocolate aroma, faintly fruity. Light and silky mouthfeel approaching thin with a sweet fudge flavor and coffee background. Medium toasty bitter finish. It was ok but could stand some fattening up. Bottled version. 0.9 Adler Brau Doppelbock OK, good. I thought my taste buds were going as this is the second beer in a row that has tasted sour to me. Luckily (I guess), this beer is just that bad. I usually expect MUCH more from Adler Brau!!! Saturday, January 3, 2004

2.3 Adler Brau Holiday Ale Copper color with a rapidly dissipating head and a mild and familiar Christmas spicy aroma. This beer was a bit unbalanced, dry and hoppy with a faint sour note and a bitter finish. Reminds me of a homebrew recipe that needs a little tweaking. That said, a couple years ago I visited their brewpub and the on tap beers we tried were quite tasty. Bottle. Sunday, December 28, 2003

4.6 Adler Brau Pumpkin Spice This is one of my favorite pumpkin brews. On a cool autumn day this beer hits the spot especially with a nice bowl of chili or beef stew. Pumpkin is obviously at the forefront, but not too overbearing. Hints of nutmeg and ginger add a nice twist. This beer does need to open up a bit tastes best towards the end of the bottle. 3.3 Adler Brau Marquette Pilsner Labeled as "Marquette Pilsner" if you find it in the bottle, like I did. Classic golden color with a creamy white head. Smell of baking bread. Tastes a little like it too. Very smooth and easy to drink. An enjoyable beer. Rerate: Brought the rest of the 6-pack to share with friends. They pointed out the taste I never quite picked out. Butter. Quite a strong butter flavor actually, don't know how I missed it the first time. Didn't enjoy this beer as much the next couple bottles I had, and lowered the rating accordingly. 3.4 Adler Brau Marquette Pilsner Tasted at the Wisconsin State Fair, this beer combines a fresh clean taste with a nice hop aroma. It's well balanced with great drinkability. Friday, July 18, 2003

1.6 Adler Brau Doppelbock I dumped out my first bottle because I thought it went bad (it tasted like vinegar). With the second being the same, it's apparent that this "dopplebock" is supposed to taste this way. Not recommended. Sunday, May 25, 2003

0.7 Adler Brau Doppelbock This beer is really bad. I brought back a bottle of this from Milwaukee and regret that lugged it that far. Doesn't taste like beer at all. Tastes like something not meant for human consumption. Saturday, May 10, 2003

0.7 Adler Brau Doppelbock Simply vomitous. This is the worst beer I have ever had. Bar none. Reminiscent of stomach bile. I have a feeling this isn't even infected, it's just horrible. Even worse than their Cream Stout. Saturday, May 10, 2003

1.5 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Horrible. Sour. Spoilt. Great head. I simply cannot say much more. Seventy Five. Seventy Five. Monday, April 28, 2003

2.5 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Nice large tan head. Tastes like a kriek stout. It looked like such a promising beer but turned out to taste awful for a stout. Sunday, April 20, 2003

2.8 Adler Brau Doppelbock Deep copper color with a thin lid of beige bubbles. Aroma of dates and the house yeast (whatever strain it is). Rather smooth on the palate. Initial malt sweetness taken back by a funky light sourness. The uniqueness of this breweries products is in the yeast and while fitting for some styles (belgians) not really that becoming to styles that demand a crispness. Almost a Dubbel, not a doppel in style. Wednesday, April 9, 2003

2.7 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Nice and dark with a good head. No particular smell that I get. Taste is bizzare. I agree with Cougar, sour and watery body. Disappointing. Wednesday, March 12, 2003
JPDIPSO |
3.2 Adler Brau Weiss Hazy golden color with a tall, lasting cream colored head. Very citrus and belgium yeast aroma. sprity feel from the start. Citric sourness start with a rich malt finish. All the rews from this brewery seem to have a real house yeast charater that makes every style unique. This is more of an belgium ale than a bavarian style wheat beer. Wednesday, March 12, 2003

3.3 Adler Brau Houdinis Escape Stout Sweet malty plum aroma turns into a disappointing sour watery body. Pleasant roasted finish, but this should be stoutier, if that's a word. Friday, January 24, 2003
JPDIPSO |
2.7 Adler Brau Eagle Lager Golden color with a quick vanishing bright white head. Sweet lemon yeasty and malt aroma. Light lemon hops flavors along with mild malt. Has almost a belgium yeast quality that throws some of the flavors askew. Friday, January 24, 2003

3 Adler Brau Bucky Brau Barley Wine Hmmm, didn't know what to make of this brew-was it supposed to be a barleywine, or an old ale, or a spice/herb/veg brew? It was like the transexual of brews in my opinion. Very fruity nose-palate was somewhat like DFH rasion d etre, but definately not as good-finish reminded me of Flying dog Horn Dog barleywine, just without the carbonation. A wierd brew-definately not my type of barleywine(SN bigfoot and Avery hog heaven are my types!!) Thursday, January 23, 2003
JPDIPSO |
2.7 Adler Brau Fox Classic River Ale Slightly hazy light amber color with a modest light cream head. Burnt hops aroma. Thin feel. Mild malt flavors with hops flavor and bitterness. Really lacks a malt backbone and body. Monday, January 13, 2003
JPDIPSO |
3 Adler Brau Tailgate Amber Light amber with a quickly diminishing fizzy head. Aroma of yeast and light caramel. Flavors of light malt and funky yeast, almost a belgium yeast characteristic. Interesting but weird. Monday, January 13, 2003
