Hesket Newmarket Old Carrock Strong Ale
A head that quickly dissipated and left quite a flat beer. However, this lack of any effervescence complemented a beer that was porter like in its flavour. Lots of toasted malt and some hop bitterness added interest, but I couldn’t escape the thought that it tasted a bit like home brew. The blurb said bottled Christmas pudding but I really didn’t get that stewed fruit flavour. All in all not very good.

Hesket Newmarket Blencathra Double IPA
Caramel semi dry short forgettable hop on the finish given the abv there should be a lot more to this

Light haze on this amber beer, small cream colour head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Smooth malts, little dry cream and caramel. Touch of dry floralness and bitter floralness. Ripe orange. Light semi dry finish. It’s okay, but for me, really not getting the best out of that hop bill.

Hesket Newmarket Blencathra West Coast Red
Bottle, pours lightly hazy dark amber, small off white head. Opened the bottle and the nose was aggressive, a tad off putting initially but after accepting this wasn’t an IPA by the usual definition, found the aroma settled with the malts and spice leading, with pine and citrus. More like a classic American Strong Ale, and a pleasure to be surprised like that with a UK brew. Medium bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation and a finish that is bitter and balanced with some sweet fruitiness

Hesket Newmarket Blencathra West Coast Red
Not sure what style this should be but ipa is closest. Appearance - beautiful deep amber autumnal red. Nice lacy head. Nose - cake mixture, dried orange and some red fruit. Maybe redcurrants. Taste - really dried berries. Cranberries. Dry malt. Palate - close to medium bodied with a dry middle section that continues through the finish. Overall - initially fruity, then a bit dry and gnarly but the challenge is worth it.

Hesket Newmarket Brim Fell
Bottle from Rheged. Appearance - amber with a nice fluffy head. Nose - pine and light cake. Taste - more cake, dried orange and caramel. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - wouldn’t say this was an ipa as the brewer advertises or a golden ale as it is loaded. More of a bitter with elements of a mild.

Hesket Newmarket Double Hitch
Cask, Thin White Duke, Carlisle. Pours a pleasant gold colour, with a clean, white head. Low sulphur aroma and some fresh grassiness. Tangy and bitter on the tongue, the Polish influence is there, in terms of flavour, which is pleasant and quite refreshing, with some earthy and dry leaves notes. Background grain in the finish. Enjoyed this.

Hesket Newmarket Sca Fell Blond
Bottled, 500ml from Tebay Services, Orton, Cumbria. Gold with white head. There is a surprisingly odd taste from the start with this beer, waxy, sour orange pith is the closes I could think of, bitter and fruity, really difficult to describe. The flavour continues throughout the beer, which was a shame as the malt is light and biscuity. Not great.

Hesket Newmarket High Pike
Bottled, 500ml from Tebay Services, Orton, Cumbria. Reddish brown with white head. There is a pleasing beery aroma on opening, rich maltiness and this continues into the beer. There is a roasty, toasty element to the malts, good depth with a slightly oily note, resinous hops show through, earthy and leafy. A pleasant bottled lower ABV bitter, not as common as you would like to think.

Hesket Newmarket Black Sail
Bottled, 500ml from Tebay Services, Orton, Cumbria. Dark brown with cream head. There is a sweetish fruity note initially from this, not really Stout like, thinnish on the palate but then a darkly roasted, bitter chocolate note emerges delivering a toasty then liquorice character. Drinks nice and smoothly. Pretty decent eventually.
