3.6 Bayern Dragon's Breath Dark Heff Ale Growler pour from Route 2, Monroe. Growler night #8. Cheers. W! Pours a dark and clean copper amber with plenty of tan foam head. Listed simply as Bayern Dunkel at the taproom, but certainly this is the beer they have pouring. Aroma has plenty of caramel and cereal malts, dark fruits, and a dent amount of wheat. Dark hefe is a nice and classic way to describe this. Plenty of wheat, touch of banana like fruit, very smooth and easy drinking brew. Nice. Saturday, September 28, 2024

3.8 Bayern Bad Santa Eisbock Tap at Belmont Station. Colour.... wet dark brown with a thin head. Nose...caramel, and malt syrup. Palate...heady with ethanol, a slight burst of a metallic flavour to start and then big flavours of macerated dates and turbinado. There's a bit of bitterness on the mid and back palate and then notes of dark cherry and treacle on the finish. Monday, June 24, 2024

3.7 Bayern Maibock 12 oz. Aroma is a little lightstruck, some bread, grain. Pours hazy golden with no real head, just a ring of foam. Taste has a bready malt sweetness backed by some light hoppy bitterness in the background. It’s tasty. Saturday, December 16, 2023

3.7 Bayern 30th Anniversary Celebration Pilsner 12 oz from a six pack from a supermarket in Thompson Falls, MT. This is apparently the 35th Anniversary Celebration Pilsener. Not sure if it’s different than the 30th Anniversary. Aroma has notes of dough, pepper, grass, candy circus peanuts. Pours slightly hazy pale golden with a one+ finger off-white head with good retention. Taste has moderate bready malt sweetness and herbal hop bitterness with some light metallic notes along with the aroma descriptors. Saturday, August 12, 2023

3.5 Bayern Pilsener Imperial Pint mug at F/stop Fitzgerald, Salem Oregon. $7.00 Pours the traditional crystal clear gold body. Nice sized frothy white head Aroma is more like a Helles..more malty than I thought. But if floral hop. Taste not exactly traditional pilsner..not really enough buzzy noble hop.More a good traditional American lager. Very nice mouth feel. Very drinkable. A good American lager. 4.4 Bayern St. Walter Hefeweizen 12 oz procured from a Bayern rep, as St. Walter Hefeweizen. Aroma has notes of banana bread, clove. Pours cloudy orange with a one+ finger off white head with decent retention; some floaties. Tastes authentic with clove phenols and banana esters. Lightly sweet with a faintly bitter hoppy edge and a hint of acidity. Lovely pillowy mouthfeel. Tip top rendition. I wonder if they’ve improved on the recipe since it was known as St. Wilbur. 3.5 Bayern Dump Truck Very nice, ever-so-slightly hazy golden coloured body with a thick, three to four centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of grass, honey, flowers, biscuits, dry malt, some oranges and lemons - very nice and incredibly aromatic - especially from the floral side of things. Light-bodied; Strong wheatie flavour at first that shows a light graininess along with a touch of citrus notes from the lemons and oranges, but the strongest components are the floral notes (tea - such as chamomile and jasmine) and a ton of honey to add to the sweetness here. Aftertaste shows a lot of easy-drinking wheat and floral components with a little dash of dryness from some subtle hops - but this is crisp and very easy-drinking. Overall, this tastes much more like a wheat ale versus and lagers, and that's a good thing, but the honey and soft floral notes make this very nice to drink, especially in the relatively hot summers up here in Montana! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Super One Foods in Kalispell, Montana on 26-July-2020 for US$1,67 sampled in my hotel room here in Missoula, Montana on 28-July-2020. 3.3 Bayern Maibock Crisp and clear, beautiful copper coloured body with a thinnish, tan head along with a dash of an off-white head that fades very quickly and only really starts out at about a centimetre tall. Aroma of malted barley, light earthiness and some rustic qualities, a lot of grain, a good deal of yeast with a hint of breadiness and a touch of unfinished caster sugar still around. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive malty and biscuity flavours show first with some light bitterness from the malts and a touch of alcohol showing up towards the end, but the relative earthiness and yeast qualities dominate without leaving much other room for complexity given that the flavours are largely pungent malts and astringent yeast. Aftertaste shows some softer sugars from pure caster sugar (I wish it was more complex than that) with some malted barley grain notes and a dash of floral hop bitterness at the very end that shows some foreign hops here without much alpha acids. Overall, about what I expected from this - not a bad beer by any means, but not a showstopper. That said, when here in Montana and there aren't as many options as other places, this is a good offering to try. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle, purchased from Vintage Sellers in Great Falls, Montana exactly a year ago on 18-June-2019 for US$1,75 sampled a year later back at home in Washington on 18-June-2020 hoping to visit Montana again soon! 1.7 Bayern Pilsener Bottle (bb June 2019), bought and drank at Old Chicago. Pours straw yellow, clear, small head of foam. Weird smell, kinda chemical like. Hops are subdued, malt even more so. The taste is light hoppiness, not noble character, malt is a bit of cracker, kind of sweet. A muddle. Mouthfeel is okay but I would never order this again. Not a Pilsner. 3.4 Bayern Doppelbock 22-Jul-09 (12-oz bottle: Purchased 17-Apr-09 for $1.49 at Bottleworks in Seattle, WA) Sweet and malty aroma with caramel, but the beer also smells rather too much like brown sugar. The flavor is rich and malty, very sweet, caramely, showing plenty of molasses and some brown sugar as well as a touch of nutmeg-like spicing. On the palate, the beer is full-bodied, dense and somewhat sticky, but part of this is from the residual sugar. Carbonation is low-medium. Clear, medium-dark brown in color with a quarter inch of tan head that settles to a thin ring, leaving minimal lacing. Perhaps a bit sweet and sugary compared to the best examples, and though it's still a very tasty beer, it does tend to become cloying on the palate after awhile. Monday, March 4, 2019

2.6 Bayern Groomer Undated can. Pours really dark brown/red, impressive head of foam, good lacing. The nose is weak. Light bread, caramel, little bitterness, which is expected. 3.3 Bayern Amber 12 ounce bottle, no dating. Pours a clear copper with a good head of foam, excellent lacing. Caramel malt, grain, light hoppy aromas. 3 Bayern Dragon's Breath Dark Heff Ale The bottle's notch is in between March and April. It's been a long time since I've seen a brewer use the notch system. I saw cans and bottles of their beers..make up your mind, already. Lol. A dark hefeweizen, eh? Looks like clear dark mahogany, slightly off white head of foam, decent lacing. Smells of cloves and bananas, the former being bolder. Light sweetness, heck, the overall smell is on the light side. At 6%abv, I thought that the smell would be bolder. I let the bottle warm up. .. The flavours are equally as non assertive. Bummer. I don't detect any flaws, it is just bland to my taste buds. There's a little bit of roast that I get, hence the dark Hefeweizen moniker, but I still don't get the reasoning behind why the brewery chose to go there. Oh well. The mouthfeel is just fine. I bought the bottle as a single and I'm glad I did. I have no interest in drinking it again. Saturday, January 26, 2019

3.2 Bayern Face Plant Can, no dating. It pours what looks to be a clear mahogany with an excellent head of off white foam, gawd, look at that sticky lacing. Nose has wheat, lightly spiced bitterness, a bit of toffee, malty but not really sweet. Taste is light spicing, toffee, wheat, earthy kind of sweet malt. Some bitterness from the what I reckon is some dark chocolate. I'd put this in the gentle side of the style. Creamy mouthfeel. It lacks punch compared to its German counterparts but I enjoyed it. 2.9 Bayern Pilsener On tap. Pours a crystal clear gold with a thin, creamy, short lived, white head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet aroma of grainy malt, lemon and grass.
