Finally made it up to Big Bear and Arrowhead after 13 years in southern California. Beautiful area but all the beer is disappointing. Surprisingly the original, Big Bear Mountain, was the best. Big Bear Mountain is a divey pub. I was told by someone at the bar to avoid the food, so I did. The tasters were served in plastic and the "pale ale" (at 8.6% abv) was super sludgy.
A mile further up the road is the new Big Bear Lake, which opened last year and took the equipment from the string of failed breweries in Rancho Cucamonga (Cucamonga Brewing, Omaha Jacks, Compass Creek, etc) but they haven’t figured out how to use it yet. The honey blonde was heavy on the green apple, black IPA was ashy, the hefe was buttery, and the sage session IPA, we’ll just say that sage is not a good flavor for an IPA.
LouEddie’s ran out of their one house beer before we got there (a porter) and the guest beers were old as hell (at least the Strand 24th St Pale was. The pizza was really good though.
Also finally added the San Bernardino location of Brew Rebellion. Hard to find, literally on the airport grounds. There is an 8.5x11 sheet of paper banner next to a dark driveway. Tasting room is in the far back of the parking lot. Beer is worse than the Yucaipa beer. Now that they’ve graduated from the 5 gallon buckets in a fridge they need to learn to brew on a real system. Also, they only serve the 10.2% peanut butter chocolate stout in full pint servings.
