I did originally (10 years ago) love the place. Unfortunately, it did DEGRADE SIGNIFICANTLY over the last 10 years and became from an iconic must-visit place to an outdated beer place.
JUST READ CAREFULLY THE BELOW INFO:
The thing that the owner doesn't allow many people to get in is OK. It could be just a thing of the place. Never use in your reply to the dude words "beer" and "drink" in the same sentence and you will be fine. Just say that you are there to "degust" or "savour" the great beer and you will be fine and let in.
But here is where we are coming to the next and main point - the IMPOSSIBILITY of getting most of the interesting bottles from the menu. His wife is serving most of the beers and despite being a nice person she doesn't know where most of the stuff is sitting. The owner in his turn doesn't give a shit regarding getting anything for the customers. Even for the regulars. So even if you were allowed to get in, the possibility that you will get a beer you really want, i.e. some nice and not even too old bottles, is GET|TING CLOSE TO ZERO just because the wife has no idea where it is and the owner doesn't give a shit to go and find it for you.
The ambiance is still nice. The tap list improved IMHO over time and there are no mass-market beers anymore which got replaced by lambics, for example.
So in conclusion - be aware of all of the above. If you have never been to the place, then it's probably worth visiting once. But I wouldn't plan a long visit there and would instead go somewhere else, as there are plenty of places now with a nice selection of old beers.

If you are a beer geek, then this place is must visit. At least once in your life. |
100 My first visit to Kulminator in 2012 was on a slow night when my son and I sat at the bar and Dirk helped us appreciate some of the unusual biers selected from the weighty list. Hope to make it back again in September. See you there! |

96 Visited during the Biliie's weekend. Ok, what more can you say about this place that has not already been said. From ringing the bell and asking to 'taste some beer, please' to getting a seat at the bar as it was very busy was one of the most nerve-wracking moments of my life......... Getting what you want is not always easy as sometimes the beer is stored somewhere vague 'over the road' but who cares, what you can drink is amazing. We also had the pleasure of someone ringing the bell twice which was a pleasure to watch the reaction. |
