3.1 Gritty McDuffs Original Pub Style 2nd sample from Gritty's. Finishing off my summer beers sample, so trying a bunch of new pale ales the past two weeks. Even though it says APA here, this is an english-style pale ale....sort of like Shipyard's Chamberlain Pale Ale. Light caramel malt, some bitter hop, little bit of wheat and yeast. Not one of the best out there, but better than average. Monday, March 4, 2019

3.8 Gritty McDuffs Black Fly Stout When I first starting drinking this sample, thought the final rating would be lower than what I'm giving....but in the end it all adds up to one solid beer. There are definitely other sweet/dry stouts that I would prefer, but still mostly better than expected. Grew on me towards the end of the glass. Appearance really can't get any better. Super dark black with mocha head.....looks thick but feel is rather thin. Was thinking and hoping would have more chocolate to the flavor, which seems to water it down a bit....but on the other hand gives it s thinner/more easy to drink lighter mouthfeel. Flavor almost an 8....has slight potential to be more. Either way I give props to my first sample from Gritty. Monday, March 4, 2019

3.6 Gritty McDuffs Freeport Series NE IPA Draught at Freeport, 6/15/18. Lightly hazy, blonde-brass-maize body is topped by a small, white head showing modest retention. Citrus (grapefruit, lemon) is strong in the nose, but not hard and acidic. Lightly juicy yellow fruits seem to be a mix of hop and a lot of yeast ester. Honey-rich malts behind easily balance but don't seem too sugary. Clean and hoppy with some slightly sharp esters but no real problems. In the mouth it's moderately bitter but growing sweet and estery with big melon notes balancing stronger grapefruit and orange notes. Softer yellow fruits keep things round and lighthearted enough here, while moderate carbonation is engaging enough to keep it somewhat brisk on the finish. Light biscuit and cracker but predominantly honey, from the malts, definitely keeps things soft overall. Good and fruity. Not full-on tropical juice like many in the style, but the softness and fruitiness is certainly there. Tuesday, August 7, 2018

3.5 Gritty McDuffs Grasshopper Draught at Freeport, 6/15/18. Clear, light blonde with a bit of deeper brass. Small, thin, white head sits lightly at cover. Leafy green, lightly spicy, lightly floral hops are modestly aromatic, clean and show moderate citrus (tangerine, lemon, orange rind) alongside light biscuity grains and a touch of sweet base malt. English yeast is light, adding playful fruitiness that complements the hops well but is otherwise not too apparent (no diacetyl here). No alcohol or flaw. In the mouth it's fairly soft, lightly sweet (white bread, dough, cookies) and moderately-to-lightly bitter (floral, herbs, light citrus). Medium-light body, but not thin or poorly malted, with moderate, engaging carbonation and no alcohol or flaw. Fairly bright and quite drinkable. Malts are a little sugary, but otherwise the hops are gentle but flavorful and aromatic and the beer is clean. Tuesday, August 7, 2018

2.7 Gritty McDuffs Original Pub Style In a bottle, it doesn't taste like much more than one of the standard, low-end light beers. Some of that might be from how it was preserved, but still that won't prevent it from being much more than a mediocre pale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone Sunday, September 3, 2017

3.1 Gritty McDuffs Maine's Best IPA Poured into a pint glass from a 12oz bottle. Nice, clear light brown appearance, but the head dissipated quickly (and virtually no lacing is there). The nose was evident with malty bread and caramel notes. It has a bitter bite that matches the 60 IBUs, but the English and German malts dominate. Seems to be an "Extra Special Bitter Ale" and not an IPA at all. Cheers! Saturday, July 1, 2017
