Ayinger am Platzl (Restaurant)
AM PLATZL 1A
“Busy and good looking beer bar in the very centre of Munich. Nice tables outside, the inside with wooden furniture looks nice too. Service was kind, English was not a problem, preparation of drinks and food was fast. Selection is mostly traditional Ayinger beers, as it can be expected. About 9 of them, plus some guest beers, also traditional. Food quality was high. Prices were medium-high, but after all, the area is touristic and central. Overall, a very nice place to visit for those aiming to make the Bavarian beer experience.“

“Visited as I realized I had pretty much missed every Spaten-brand beer ever except for one (not counting Franziskaner there) - and visited this "fancy", above all, restaurant. This is not a pub, this is not a brewpub, this is a very classic restaurant, that just carries the name of a beer/brewery. Popping in just for a beer is just awkward. Multliple dining halls, one on the ground floor and several on the upper floor. Found a random table by the bar, got served by the very pro service, somewhat confused by my completely against the grain approach, hah. Seemed full enough, though every place was full enough that Friday. Beer-selection-wise, though it's not owned by them, it's more of an Spaten-Löwenbräu-Gruppe or better yet ABI place than a Spaten place. Yes, there is Spaten Hell, and it was in quite a good shape, boring but quite chuggable, but it was the only Spaten beer on tap. If you want to pay 5.90€ for a big one (hey, at least you're not forced to get a Mass, and there's a 4.8€ 0.3l). The beer prices are stupidly high in general. You get Beck's and Beck's Unfiltered (!) as SLG does it for export, but you'd be a blithering idiot to get them as they are 4.9/5.1 for 0.3l (so 0.5l would be over 8€!). The Franziskaner Weissbiere and, I guess, the Franziskaner Kellerbier (just says Kellerbier?!) are 6.20€/0.5l, the Löwenbräu Dunkel 5.90€. I repeat, this is primarily a restaurant, a fancy/expensive one, not a bar, and I guess the prices are partly, apart from the fact that they can put them up, location and all, to reduce only beer-focused visitors. All in all, a nice, fancy, fairly expensive restaurant in a nice location, with a pleasant atmosphere and pro service, and an overpriced ABI beer list, where the beer list seems to be merely an afterthought to go with the brand.“

“Visited with the @@ b-day crowd on a very busy Saturday. The band was playing (with random Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit thrown in here and there repeatedly), and the place is indeed quite unique, old-school, pleasantly traditional in some ways, an enormous money-making machine in others, what with the prices in general, the super expensive pretzels being carried around and only 1l options for some of the beers -The regulars and the Winterzwickl were the options. The lady taking care of our area was a pro too. Haven't tried the food but it was decent allegedly. All in all, to be visited as a tourist experience, for beer and likely food as well there are better options around.“

“A nice, small modern brewpub by the Kolumbusplatz station, doing a surprisingly wide array of styles, with the system right by the door. 12 taps, with the taplist being a bunch of skateboards on the wall (!). Younger crowd, quite international-seeming looking at the bunch of languages heard since we entered. Nothing too memorable about the decoration, a modern place of the not-well-lit type. Friendly, efficient staff. They offer flights of 4-6, with the 6 one being best buy for tickers by far. The Helles is 4.90 for 0.5l, 3.60 for 0.3l otherwise, and the rest ranges from 5.6 (Bayrischer Herb "Pils"), to 8.20€ (Cold Days Cold IPA) for a big 'un. Decent beers, nothing truly standing out. Making me more glad than ever I live in Prague. Not the most expensive place, mind. All in all, a tourist ticker's paradise in a way, and a cool place worth supporting.“

“Visited with Jonas and SinH4. True Brew's lager outlet, located close to Kolumbusplatz, combines old-school, like its concept, paraphernalia, side-pull taps, etc., traditional food like Obazda and Käsespätzle, a lot of sausage-related and pickled stuff, with a modern twist on all of that. Fairly hip(sterish) youngish crowd - and the place was completely packed, very busy but friendly enough staff. The Hell and the Weissbier (the only non-lager, and the only bottled beer we saw) were 4.9€ for 0.5l, which is fine - the Hell was okay, slightly needing tweaking taste-wise, the Weiss had a lovely body, but missed some , the Edelpils, served in the adequate glass with the little paper on the bottom, is a Pils from a strictly local perspective, finishing dry, and has a nice little hoppy touch, but, er, stretches my concept of pils slightly - 4.9€ for I think 0.4l? Hm. The Hopfengold (lager with modern hops, nice), the nice, berryish Altfränkisch Spezial and a soft, pleasant Räucherl were 5.30€. The food looked somewhat pricey from my perspective - but their Obazda was nicely rustical, getting the Stefan & Jonas seal of approval, with the bread and the pickled stuff with it being tasty. Pickled stuff for me is either "hell no" or "oh, this is actually tasty", depending on quality - and this fell squarely in the latter. The Pastrami sandwich was, and it had better have been for 16€, sizeable enough and simply delectable - the combo of pastrami with truly excellent Sauerkraut, good pickles, Russian dressing and above all well toasted, very tasty bread worked on all levels. So... yeah, I'd raise this into the should-visit category. They are still fine-tuning their beers it seems, and all were quite drinkable at the end, the food is definitely worth a shot.“

“Oh dear oh my, a tankovna in Munich - and serving German beer from tank, wow! A very popular, busy, darker modern place with a bunch of jokey sausage-related paraphernalia, with shades of Czech, in a mildly sketchy part of the city center. The place hit a concept and it does it very well - basically, Maxlrainer Helles in tank - three of them, with filling and tapping times noted. Not sure which one we were drinking from, but I'd guess the oldest one, which was semi-old for CZ standards. Still, seemed like quite a popular place, so odd they aren't going through them quicker. The prices are STILL 2.8€ for 0.4l, which is quite commendable, with other places being regularly over 4€ for 0.5l. Though for maybe better beer than the sweet, almost hop free Maxlrainer. Their menu is mainly sausages, looking good and for good prices and some CZ-inspired pub dishes. Busy, efficient service. This is a place I'd definitely go out with friends if I was living there, and you should hit it up too - one beer that will definitely be a tick for you and maybe a meal.“

“Visited with the @@ B-Day crew, it's, as its name says, the Beer and Oktoberfest museum's bar, located in its cellar area. Good atmosphere, lively, locals visiting as well, depending on the area either well-lit or atmospherically less well-lit, hah. Nice details and paraphernalia around, as one would expect from a museum bar. Efficient, helpful service. The beers allegedly rotate between different Oktoberfest breweries, and we ran into Augustiner - the Hell, Dunkel and Edelstoff on tap, the Weizen likely in bottles as well. The beers were in very good shape, the Hell slightly less good than at the Isarthor, but no complaints, the best shape I've ever seen Edelstoff in for example. 4.10€, which is quite okay these days. Didn't partake in food, but people seemed happy with it. All in all, a solid pit stop to check out, there might be some slightly less common sights on tap inside.“

“According to Stefan, Jonas and likely others, the bar with the best shape Augustiner Hell in München. Just across the street from the Isarthor, on the corner of a quaint little square, with Fin describing the atmosphere inside best. Dark browns and greens mostly, old-school but the crowd is young and old. We had to stick to the tiny patio outside as it was full and there was a ton of us sadly. Helpful service, very efficient. Didn't note other beers, though I didn't look and ask, being focused on the legitimately top-shape Augustiner - 4.5€ for a big one. People were happily eating away inside, might be good for that. All in all, well worth checking out!“

“Bar of the Wombats hostel in the Werksviertel. I went looking for a open venue which would have Werksviertelbräu on tap, since they sadly were closed around new years themselves. Luckily this place next door does not only have that onne, but surprisingly enough some austrian crafty beers and ciders on the menue. Modern exposed concrete interior, softened by mood lighting and wood furniture. Effective pay as you go, relaxed atmosphere - it was early in the evening mind you, probably is bouncing when the Austr(al)ians show up in numbers.“

“Visited December 2023. It’s a rustic bar/Kneipe next to the well known Café Kosmos in the Hauptbahnhof area, which kind of shabby. But the twist here is that they are specialised in high quality sausages, and many varieties of them. The sausages are great are served with good mustard and fresh horseradish and toasted bread. The other twist is the non-pasteurised Maxlrainer Hell, which tastes just great. Bonus: Czech dishes such as Knedlik and Hermelin is offered which is a rare find. Another bonus: The cheap beer price of 2.80 for 0.4l!“

“Visited here yesterday, 17th October 2023 in the company of Jonas, Stefan, Craig and Stella. It's located just 3-5mins walk from Kolumbsplatz on the U1, U2, U7 and U8 so very convenient, also a few minutes further on the from Kolumbsplatz is Brewsli so that is also worth taking in, when in the area. It's a small/mid sized place and for those that are unaware is the more traditional sister place to True Brews other venue, which itself is only 15 - 20 mins walk from here. We tried four beers and for me these were quite mixed in terms of like/didn't like so much. Two were good, the others require some work. However the place is very nice, I understand that the food (traditional) is v.good, and the layout is more tiled than the traditional dark wood interior of many of the more historical places. I like it“

“Visited August 2023, on a Wednesday evening. Located close to Hopdog on the other side of Isar. Modern retro German style Kneipe with 50s vibe. 6 True Brew beers on tap, exclusively brewed for the venue, Helles, Dunkles, Altfränkisch, Böhmisch Gold, Weizen, Edelpils. Canned beer as well (True Brew Lager). Top quality beers, I especially liked the Böhmisch Gold, excellent and truly authentic. Very remarkable is that each beer style is served in the correct glass ware (e.g. Böhmisch Gold in Tübinger mug, Helles in Willibecher), which is a big bonus! Food offered, not that great but good enough, small portions. This is more a beer venue than a food venue. Reasonable prices for Munich considering the offered quality of the beer. Friendly service. What a great addition to the Munich beer scene!“

“I visited here Thursday 13th July 2023 walking between Bierkiste and Andy's Krablergarten, I found it by taking a slightly longer backstreet route avoiding Lindwurmstraße. It's located on the corner of Waltherstraße and Maistraße, the two streets providing the name for the place. It's a nice building, tastefully furnished with fridges off to the right and also crates of beer here. I seem to recall that there may have been further fridges near to where you pay. The lady serving me was really nice, very helpful and when we got chatting explained that it's a sister store to Bierkiste, though they don't have a license to drink outside like Bierkiste. She also explained that they would try to keep their range slightly different to Bierkiste and looking at the beers I think that there were definitely some that I don't see in the former. I really liked it, I picked up a couple of new Furst Wiacek cans but if my bag hadn't of been so full I would have added some Frontaal beers. The lady liked my Half Man Half Biscuit T-shirt, asked about the group and said that she might listen to them, I chuckled and explained they're not for everyone, funny, sarcastic, witty and name checking the obscure and irrelevant, a very unique band that could only have come from the UK, good luck to her :-).“

“Visited here Thursday 13th July 2023, it's about 7-8 stops out on the S-Bahn from Isator as I recall and a 12-15 min walk from the station. Biergarten is situated at the front, I asked for the Kellerbier but got the Helles/export and that after the person serving me had to go and change the keg for a beer I hadn't asked for :-). Quiet when I arrived but super busy with young kids and pare after 15-20mins. Beer good, and staff fine, atmosphere pleasant, mostly left to my own devices. Worth the treck out here.“

When I was 23 in 1996 I went here and I was much rowdier than this visit, but it still had the same vibe I remember. I always enjoyed that you would likely sit next to people from all over. “January 6 2024, restaurant visit: Visited with the @@ b-day crew, for dinner. The interior of the brewpub is quite impressive, as expected, sprawling. More professional service when we visited, so raising that score. Tried the food and the Braumeisterschnitzel (two pork loin cuts, one coated with Obazda, one with spent malt probably, were delicious, the portion being okay, 20€ for that. Tried the Zwickl this time and it was quite nice as well (5.20€), the Weizen maybe not 4.0 as before but still great (5.40€), and the seasonal Archibald stout (5.50€) pleasant and well balanced. The food quality is pretty high here, so I'd definitely recommend it for that, if your budget allows it. All in all upscale, but I reckon they do follow that with quality, so I'm okay with the place. The limited selection keeps the score down, but I'd go there over almost any central tourist trap bar maybe Schneider, which this place has beat when it comes to the basic weisse. June 13 2023, Biergarten visit: Visited with Jonas. Classic brewpub located on the former Thomasbräu premises, very easy to reach from the Goetheplatz U-Bahn station (though you should probably go to Poccistr., hit Bierkiste, and then move to here and onwards). Didn't check the inside of the pace, but the pictures look nice, vaulted ceilings, light colors, classical decor. The Biergarten was very nice as well, a pleasant place to drink beer / have lunch. For some reasons, a part of it is sometimes off limits, which we found out only after we passed by the service, sat down, then came back to order. Gee, thx bro, could've told us immediately. 3 beers on tap as we visited (2 regulars + seasonal) - skipped the Zwickl this time, but the Weisse was world-class, the best clove/vanilla dominated one I, a rabid banana fan, have ever tried perhaps. Huge props to the young brewer! They change(d) brewers a bit, and this one's Weizen is exemplary, but her seasonal PhilIPA (Cascade/Mittelfrüh (?!!?!)) was sub par, and even less impressive considering the 5.50€/0.5l price. Sadly, I missed out on their Citra Weizen by two days. Oh well. The service was... of the type where 3 different waiters come to you in 5-10 minutes asking for this and while they were professional and polite, no reproach there, I'm not a fan of the concept. Still, I'll return here next time for a Zwickl and the new seasonal I guess. It's not far from many relevant places these days, so if you're around, you should probably give it a visit, despite the prices. 5/6/6/15“

“Visited with Jonas, and I really cannot add much more than what was said. Pretty close to Poccistrasse station (take the back exit if you're coming from the north), so easy to get to in general. Primarily a store, and a well-stocked and fairly priced one (for the area), focusing mainly but not exclusively on a wide selection fo Bavarian and German beers, with a nice row of smaller fridges each dedicated to separate important/relevant German craft brewers - the Flügge one sadly getting almost empty (wonder what they'll replace it with... but do get Otho while it's still there). It's also, a bar, as the patio proves, and you can make good use of the chilled beers, including two taps - Tilmans Das Helle was on one, and they were out of their Pilsner on the other. The TDH was of course in very good shape, if less hoppy than I like even for Helles standards. Patronized and beloved by the local scene it seems, becoming THE place of choice for many, and, most importantly, it works all days of the week (though, allegedly, late on Sundays the prices go up). Good, knowledgeable service, English spoken. A must-visit, even more so as there are so many other must-visits within walking distance of it.“
