“Hopcat reopened in a new location in royal Oak. It is a typical of the new Hopcats.“

“I came here on 19.1.2022. Parking could be a problem as Mary’s beer hall is located on the main road with no designated parking area. Long beer bar with a very good beer selection (+25 taps) including many local Michigan beers. I had a Sally Citra (Mikkeller), 70+ (Old Nation) and a Hopslam (Bell’s). They are offering sample sizes of all their beers for a fair price. Good food menu with one page of vegetarian stuff only. The beer cheese burger I had was delicious. Nice place. I will come back.“

“Came here on 5.10.2021. Another strip mall pub close to Royal Oak. Large restaurant with a bar to your left. They have at least 65 beers on tap (a few Germans from Weihenstephan), not too many ones from their own brewery which is not located here. I had an Elephant Juice (Eastern Market) which was quite good. Food (Brisket and brussels sprouts) was fine too.“

“Came here on 5.10.2021. Brewpub established in 1995 located in one of the suburbs of Detroit. Copper brewhouse and a few beer tanks are behind a long bar. 10 beers available including a couple of guest beers. Had an Oktoberfest which was not great. The whole place is a bit untidy and service was weird too. There a definitely better beer places in the Detroit area.“

“New location in Royal Oak -- I visited on day 3. Large, sleek place in an industrial park with lots of free parking out front. Modern, expansive interior, with a huge taplist. Everything is available in 6 oz pours for $2.50-4 or so. The taplist was pretty exciting -- though at least half is taken up by local lagers and uninteresting ales (like pales), the rest is IPAs/IIPAs, big impie stouts, and other off-kilter beers. Large food menu too, with plenty of vegan options. I ordered the Buddha Bowl ($12). Very nicely crafted dish. I found a little piece of plastic (I guess from the dressing packet) and after alerting them to the issue, they profusely apologized and comp'd me my food bill -- now that's A+ service. The excellent taplist means I recommend this very highly.“

Jolly Pumpkin (Restaurant)
419 S MAIN ST
“Located on a trendy street, with pay parking out front. Stylish interior, with plenty of seating, including lots of bar seating. Extensive draught selection with equal parts Jolly Pumpkin and North Peaks. 5 oz pours available of everything with some of the JP stuff going as high as $4.50 per 5 oz, just for saisons / wild ales -- that is a rip-off. Exceptionally friendly service, however. If you're up this way, worth a visit -- otherwise, hit another JP spot, like the downtown one.“

“Came here on 12.11.2019. Seems to be a chain with locations in Chicago and the Detroit area. 24 beers on tap, half of them are oak aged skir beers. Beers are brewed in Michigan but not in this location. Nice U-shaped copper bar surrounding the taps ans two tanks. Overall very nice ambiance with a separated restaurant area. I had the Pumpkin sour and a hazy IPA, both were excellent.“

“Shopped here many times over the years, even before I was interested in craft beer, they have a nice cheese selection plus a great assortment of other items, for example butter, bread, and bake goods. They have smoked meats along with other smoked items. The beers are placed by type and brand along the shelf, there are coolers for cold beers, also, they have a nice wine and liquor selection.“

“The parking lot is small and on the side. This place is in the downstairs of a building with a pizzeria on the top level. I came by at around 6:10pm on a Monday and their website lists being open till 8pm. The place was closed and listed on the door that the place closes at 6pm on Monday. The atmosphere is a brick cellar. I would be great if they updated their website to the actually hours (which are not much). *The second time I went this place it was open. The selection of beers is pretty limited. They had some older stock. The service was good. Pricing was average. It is fairly obvious wine is the primary focus.“

“Good size free dedicated parking lot. Nice up-scale grocery. Frigerated coolers on the left side going back. Singles after that on the left. Help with what was available was good. Pricing was reasonable. I would go back, but with a 90+ I expected more.“

“Our group went in large part because of the vegan menu. This place was packed, but I guess that's bound to be the case in downtown Royal Oak on a Saturday night. Fortunately we had reservations. Nearly had to climb over people to get to my seat at the communal table up front, though. The beer selection was very nice, and the foods from the vegan menu were pretty good -- I just wish there was less emphasis on the fake meats there/a little more entree selection (tempeh/black bean burgers would be preferable to disturbingly accurate meat recreations to me). I'd have gotten the Tuscan Penne Pasta had I not been warned away from it by the server.“

“Very cool "little" place not far from Griffin Claw (nice 1-2 punch). The place is relatively new and the owners are great...husband and wife...they will treat you well. I really loved my visit here...it was brief (on my way to the airport)...but memorable. Great conversations (owners and locals)...very enjoyable beers! This is a neighborhood craftbrewery in every sense of the worked...and I wish I had one in walking distance like this as a couple of the patrons did when I visited. I will be back...you should definitely stop here.“

“It’s a small little space, fairly easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, but once you find it, it’s very inviting. The space is fairly "open" with only a few bar tables setup (so limited seating), but lends itself to a "chillin’ on the back porch" vibe. Everyone was very welcome and conversational, it didn’t really seem to matter if you were a regular (is this place old enough to have regulars?) or not. The bartender / brewmaster was very knowledgeable and excited about his beers (and beer in general), of which he had a dozen on tap. I can’t remember how much I paid, but I only intended on getting two drinks, but ended up getting a third because, not only were they tasty and unique, but definitely not a wallet buster.“

“The place looks small, but fits a lot of people without feeling too crammed. I like that they have some of their barrels out for customers to get a look at what they’re doing. The Wild Cherry Ale sounds interesting. It’s unfortunate they don’t have a beer menu. The waiter said they cycle through their beer too fast. They had seven beers on tap when I went: their Royal Pride IPA, Michigan Kolsch, a Belgian pale ale, a dark saison, their 4th Street Wheat, an ESB, and their Red. I’m always sad when a brewery doesn’t have at least one dark, malty beer on tap. The saison was interesting, and the wheat and Belgian pale ale were pretty good. The Red and ESB were a bit bland. I did enjoy the food, and the service was good. I’ll probably go back, especially since they offer a free meal during your birthday month.“

“First, the layout is pretty strange with the registers in the middle of the store. But regardless of that, a pretty good selection. Not the top in the Metro Detroit region, but likely the top in its area. Many, but not all beers available as singles. Employees offered to help a few times, which is good. Cashier was very mumbly, though, but mentioned one of the beers I was buying from a new brewery in Royal Oak. Certainly would be back were I in the area.“

“Holiday Market’s beer selection is pretty nice. Decent assortment of singles, reasonable prices. Every now & then, they’ll get a gem (they got a good amount of Vanilla Rye this year). However, where they really shine is the grocery section. Lots of nice meats, cheeses, dips, breads, etc., a great place for snacks & food.“

“Awesome High End Grocery Store. It has a dedicated parking lot, but it was full so ended up parking on the street close by at a meter. The beverage section is in the the corner furthest from the entrance, but close to where you check out. It’s weird how that works out. Anyway, they had a lot of Schramm and B. Nektar that I hadn’t seen elsewhere, plus what I had seen around town. Best selection of Schramm of the two places I visited that did have it. Bottles were about what I expected. The beer selection was fair, but really I didn’t give it much of my attention as I was on a mission to find mead. This place deserves to be on your itinerary if you visit the Detroit area. I really appreciate mikem409 giving me this heads up. Also, I’m a bit of a grocery store nerd, and this place was what I dream a grocery store should be.“

“A great cellar location with a nice atmosphere. Staff is great, friendly, pleasant and knowledgeable. The only flaw is the small selection. Not bad, but nothing that interesting. Singles and six packs but unless you are looking for something specific they ’might’ have not that great.“

“Small "hole in the wall" type, storefront restaurant. It’s done up inside with typical sea decor - aquariums, fishnets, ship wheels - but it’s not overdone, just present. The waitress was personable with a quirky sense of humor and a genuine enjoyment about her. Plus she was good at making recommendations about the beers. They only have five standard beers, plus two seasonal beers, and some Budweiser bottles. The beers were above average quality, nothing stands out, but nothing was off putting either. The food was outstanding - I could’ve just eaten nothing but their Caesar salad (with anchovies, of course) but their Salmon Reuben with sweet potato fries was a winner for me. Of course, being a seafood joint, the price of food was a bit high compared to other brewpubs (although affordable for seafood), but the beer prices were fair (a flight of all seven beers for $7). I’ll definitely go back for the food, and the beer ain’t bad either.“

“Visited with some co-workers and was surprised that this was also a brewery. The focus was the seafood for sure. The food was good and service was solid, but the beer was just okay. They had 7 available and did a flight of all for $7. I would come back for the food, just not the beer.“

“This is an upscale grocery that is worth the trip for the cheese alone. Lots of wine, liquor and beer. A great selection of Michigan singles as well as other craft and imports. They do get some limited releases but you have to pay attention to get them. This would be my grocery store if I were anywhere close.“

“Hard to find stand alone building in Royal Oak (it is under the pizzeria sign. More wine than beer, but they have a small but well thought out beer selection. Some imports, some locals, and some craft, but not a lot of any of them. The good news is the bottles can be bought a as singles. Helpful friendly staff. The beer is organized sport of by style, which I find confusing, but the space is small enough that you can find what you a are looking for if they have it.“

“I love this place. They have a great selection and constantly roll their product. Staff members are knowledgeable and friendly. The only complaint I have is there is no really consistency on rare beer releases from what I’ve seen. Some are first come first serve, others like the one happening now, are a lotto system. This wouldn’t be bad, except they started accepting lotto entries via facebook, which I think is extremely unfair. Overall, this is a great store with very knowledgeable staff and friendly service. Oh ya, and great beer!“

“Restaurant with good food and decent beer. Biggest complaint is that the beer was way too cold. That is ok or even necessary for bud light, but not a good beer. Food is very good and service friendly and knowledgable. Recommend that you order beers and let them warm on the table for 20 min. “

“Great food. Sat at the bar and had incredible service! 12 taps, all MI beers (Founders, Right Brain, Shorts, Liberty Street, Saugatuck, Detroit, Kuhnhenn’s) which is very cool since I am not local. “Kind of a chain brewpub feel to it with seven beers on tap and one on cask. The beer was nothing to write home about but the service was okay, though she didn’t know much about beer. I got a five sampler and the IPAs were the best of the bunch, though only ok. Bastone’s around the corner had a lot better beer.“

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the beers. The pils was nice and sessionable, the scotch ale was good and they have a good ipa and blond ale. The mussels were very good and lots of good choices for dinner. If you like seafood and beer this is a good place to visit.“

“After getting this as a suggestion from some Michigan BA’s, I stopped in while I was in town last week. It turned out to be an incredible recommendation. This is set up as a specialty grocery store, with a vast selection of wine and beer as well. Coming from Chicago, I was looking to try out the selections from Short’s and other locals, but their overall selection is just incredible. They have a good selection of nationally distributed craft beers, but I was most impressed by the selection of singles. There not many places that really break up six packs into singles around where I live, so I was able to grab a huge selection of beer without committing to a whole pack. Having a singles selection like this absolutely made the trip worth it for me, but the positives don’t stop there. I noticed the prices on some bombers and six packs were cheaper than they would cost at home. The beer is stored far away from light, so I never have to worry about it being lightstruck. Also, they get enough traffic and do enough volume that everything they have in stock seems fresh. Ashley, their resident beer expert, is just a great guy. He had responded to my thread about places to go with very detailed information, and it was a pleasure to talk beer with him in person at the store. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, and has great recommendations. Holiday just became my regular bottle shop whenever I am in town seeing my cousin, and I would recommend it to anyone. Overall, just a great experience. Good prices, great beer, great service. I guess you could call me a fan.“

“The atmosphere is nice. Like being in a huge wine cellar. Service is knowledgeable, but more about wine than beer. The selection is above average and all the beer is sold in singles. Which is great for variety, but not cost effective if you are looking for a 4-6 pack. The value is hit or miss. I paid less for some bottles and more for others...than I normally would. Overall, it is a great place if you live or work in the area. I usually stop in on my lunch breaks.“
