60 /100 Selfridges & Co Ltd (Beer Store) 400 OXFORD STREET Been there for beer in the food hall a couple times, the selection was rather slender the second time. Still a few ticks each time. |
62 /100 Coach & Horses (Bar) 5 BRUTON STREET Tudor style corner pub between New Bond Street and Berkeley Square. Has a welcoming traditional interior with the area around the bar at the front quite tight, but the building expands into a bigger room behind. I think this is currently a Greene King run pub, but it had several guest ales complimenting their own that pleased myself in terms of selection. It was well kept enough too. |
50 /100 3 STAFFORD STREET In the middle of a short row of buildings, opposite a Nicholson's pub, it shows live football the same as its closest neighbour. Traditional enough in design without being exciting, this can be said of its cask ales as well which were from the Greene King regulars selection as you might expect, and St Austell Tribute as a guest ale on my visit. |
54 /100 10 STAFFORD ST Twin floored Nicholson's pub with a bar on the ground floor as well as its slightly more appealing basement area. That said both bars seemed to be devoid of the usual set of brews and guests you get a Nicholson's pubs. This has to be the worst selection I've ever seen in a pub from this chain. London Pride was about it in cask! It was showing the live football but it was the quietest of the places I visited on the same night that was showing this broadcast. |
54 /100 8 DERING STREET Small Greene King corner pub with a bar against its back wall serving a mix of cask and keg from the brewer, although the selection itself was all regular brews from the brewers portfolio. This place was uncomfortably packed as it was showing Champions League football on its televisions. Traditional and cosy enough in design. |
54 /100 Grapes (Bar) 16 SHEPHERD MARKET Attractive corner pub in the Shepherd Market area north of Piccadilly, much more so than the Kings Arms close by, and the inside has more about it too. Sadly the selection is very ordinary despite a good row of cask ale pumps on show, all with an ale, but the local Trumans Zephyr was the most exotic brew available, and I'm sure Londoners see this regular ale all the time on travels. |
52 /100 Kings Arms (Restaurant) 2 SHEPHERD MARKET Greene King pub over two floors and shows live football, which mean't this place was packed to the rafters on Champions League semi-final night. An uncomfortable squeeze through the crowd revealed a mix of Greene King regulars such as Abbot and IPA, but there were two guest clips from Portobello brewery, albeit their regular brews and one had gone off. The design of the place is traditional but very ordinary with a durability in design. |
56 /100 Iron Duke (Fuller’s) (Bar) 11 AVERY ROW, MAYFAIR Down some alleyways on the western side of New Bond Street, which do give it an atmospheric location, inside it's quite an ordinary functional Fuller's pub with durable traditional furniture and a range of cask and keg options from the brewer on the bar to the right. I found their latest special ale here. The layout of the pub is like an inverted 'L' |
44 /100 Punch Bowl (Bar) 41 FARM ST Despite living for London in 12 years previously, this is one of those backstreet pubs that I only know exists because of Ratebeer. On inspection though I didn't miss anything during those years. A pretty ordinary concern, traditional and cosy enough in design but certainly nothing to make a beeline for. There's three hand pumps here with the most regular of cask ales on them, and some keg too which you'll almost certainly have seen before. |
42 /100 Chequers Tavern (Bar) 16 DUKE STREET ST JAMES’S Tiny traditional pub south of Piccadilly on the way to St James' Palace. The pub has two entrances, at its front and along a side alleyway. The bar is a short one midway through the pub opposite the latter of the two doors mentioned, with very little room between the two. I'd imagine most people end up standing up here and in the alleyway at its busiest times, but there's a few tables on the carpeted area by the front window. There's three hand pumps here all with macro brews most people who have spent time in the UK would be familiar with. |
36 /100 Fortnum & Mason (Grocery Store) 181 PICADILLY Famously situated on Piccadilly, I found the beers downstairs on my visit, and they perhaps had the least care and attention in terms of presentation within the department store. It was all a bit slap-dash. There's a couple of ales brewed for the store though, whether they are rebrands I'm not sure, but if not then there's something unique to be found here. |
72 /100 Iron Duke (Fuller’s) (Bar) 11 AVERY ROW, MAYFAIR Pub tipico, con varias cervezas donde elegir, trato amable. |
66 /100 Clarence (Nicholson’s) (Bar) 4 DOVER STREET A Nicholson’s pub just off Piccadilly in Dover Street, opposite the Ritz. It’s quite small and can get crowded but it’s pleasant enough if you can find a seat. There are around eight hand pumps, with a strong showing from Siren when we were there.

52 /100 3 STAFFORD STREET Visited 22.10.18. Small boozer with four ales on cask, including A bot Ale and Greene King IPA. |
64 /100 Red Lion (Fullers) (Bar) 2 DUKE OF YORK STREET, Possibly came here in the early 2000's as my work offices were just around the corner, but definitely spent time in here in the summer of 2017, trying the one Fullers summer specials available at the bar, the rest of the selection were regular ones from the brewer of guest bottles. The cramped heritage decor is probably the best reason to come here though, in a couple of rooms either side of a small central bar. |
42 /100 8 DERING STREET Worn London pub with typical taps selection. The lady at the bar was pushy and rude. No reason to go back. |
64 /100 Selfridges & Co Ltd (Beer Store) 400 OXFORD STREET Harry Selfridges bar. I tried a hefeweizen I had not tried before. Nice place in the basement with pretty good service. They have half pints. There is an area with a few bottles outside the bar area before the escalator. |
62 /100 Coach & Horses (Bar) 5 BRUTON STREET A tiny pub in the middle of London. Was perfectly located close to Victorias Secret so I was taken care of when the female part of the family was occupied for 2h. Hard to get a table but fast service. Decent selection on tap. |
78 /100 Selfridges & Co Ltd (Beer Store) 400 OXFORD STREET Big classy department store in London. Their food hall in the basement is actually quite good and has a lot of specialties, including a decent wine and beer selection. |
48 /100 Coach & Horses (Bar) 5 BRUTON STREET A nice enough pub with a decent selection of ales, but it doesn’t stand out in the crowd. |
56 /100 8 DERING STREET Old pub hiding just off Oxford Street. Given the location a rather confused crowd of office workers, shoppers and tourists. Was Taylor Walker so now Greene King with the expected disappointing outcome for the beer selection. Only a couple of GK bitters and some sad macro craft on my visit. And prices were astonishingly high. |
62 /100 Grapes (Bar) 16 SHEPHERD MARKET Called Ye Grapes. Nice looking and historical pub, one of four pubs on Shepherd Market. Rotating selection of guest cask ales. Had Cottage Honey Bunny. Did not eat. Well worth a visit, as with the three other pubs. |
58 /100 Kings Arms (Restaurant) 2 SHEPHERD MARKET Nice pub at Shepherd Market, with 3 other pubs in the vicinity: The Shepherds Tavern, No 7 Market Tavern and Ye Grapes. Had Greene King Oompah, a few other cask and keg ales were also on. Did not eat. Worth a visit. |
46 /100 Kings Arms (Restaurant) 2 SHEPHERD MARKET Tucked away between Piccadilly and Curzon Street in nice Shepherd Market. Not far from our hotel. Ordered a round of pints and one sip later we were told they were about to close and therefore to leave. Rude staff . |
64 /100 Audley (Taylor Walker) (Bar) 41-43 MOUNT STREET LONDON Busy pub on Christmas Eve, in an area where good pubs are not abundant. Several cask ales on, the pint I had of Hardys and Hansons Rocking Rudolph was in good condition. The separate dining room on the 1st floor was closed when I was there. |
40 /100 Chequers Tavern (Bar) 16 DUKE STREET ST JAMES’S A small, carpeted pub. Kind of cosy, but also a bit warm and steamy. Three casks on the go but, alas, nothing interesting, just stuff like Fullers London Pride and Brains. All the kegs and bottles are macro stuff. This place really isn’t worth your time. There are better options just a short walk away. |
52 /100 3 STAFFORD STREET A little dreary inside - low ceilings, a fruit machine. Four casks on offer, and to be fair they have some mildly interesting stuff, such as Hammerton, Portobello and Sadler’s. The kegs are mostly rubbish. The bottles offer some entry-level craft beers, including BrewDog, Sierra Nevada and Goose Island. A beer geek might be able to find something of interest on cask, but that’s about all this place has going for it. |
68 /100 Red Lion (Fullers) (Bar) 2 DUKE OF YORK STREET, A lovely old-school pub, with lots of fetching ornate detailing. Lots of folks scattered around the pub enjoying pleasant conversation on a Friday night; no loud music over which to shout. Nice range of Fullers beers on cask, although no ’special’ beers from the brewery in bottle. BrewDog and Camden Town are in bottle, though. The kegs are mostly macro, besides the Fullers Frontier lager. The service is friendly. My beer was perhaps a little pricey, but it’s Mayfair. Probably one of the better pubs in the immediate vicinity to grab a pint of ale. |
66 /100 10 STAFFORD ST An alright Nicholson’s. They have 10 casks going but there is some duplication. A few interesting offerings, including seasonals from Trumans. Cans of Firestone-Walker. Meantime and macro on keg. Decent service. The beer is a little pricey. Nice pub, has an upscale, old world vibe. Worth popping by if you are in the area. |
66 /100 Clarence (Nicholson’s) (Bar) 4 DOVER STREET An OK Nicholson’s pub. Upscale vibe. Eight casks on the go, but two were off during my Friday evening visit. Some interesting kegs, including Tiny Rebel, Firestone-Walker and Meantime. Bottles are mostly macro with Roosters and BrewDog providing a small spark. Friendly and efficient service. OK value. One of the better pubs in the immediate vicinity, but not a must-visit. |
46 /100 Grapes (Bar) 16 SHEPHERD MARKET A pretty bog standard pub. Busy with local suits. Six casks but nothing interesting - Sharps, Fullers, Trumans. Keg and bottle offers nothing but macro. Not really much to offer a beer geek in here. |
54 /100 Kings Arms (Restaurant) 2 SHEPHERD MARKET So so. Has a neighbourhood pub kind of vibe, but the clientele seems to be mostly local business people. And they have TVs in here. Four casks on offer, but mostly third-tier stuff like Greene King. BrewDog, Meantime and Portobellow on keg. Bottles of Sierra Nevada and such. Friendly service, average prices. Not worth going out of your way to visit. |
58 /100 Guinea (Young’s) (Bar) 30 BRUTON PLACE A fairly ho hum place, beer-wise. It’s a Young’s pub, so that’s the only interesting stuff you’ll find on tap; they have around four casks. The usual rubbish on keg and in bottle. Hard to gauge the ambiance, since during my visit it was very busy and you could hardly move inside. So, I didn’t see the dining area, which I gather is a draw for this place. The cask ale I had was in good condition, so that’s something, I suppose. This place is definitely not a must-visit, but if you find yourself in this part of town, where the options are few, this place is an OK option. Of course, you could walk 10 minutes into Soho and have much better options, but there you go. |
70 /100 Audley (Taylor Walker) (Bar) 41-43 MOUNT STREET LONDON Nice, roomy pub in Mayfair. Quite a few casks, taps and bottles. Roomy and friendly. |
64 /100 Windmill (Youngs) (Bar) 6-8 MILL STREET A traditional British pub. The beer range is uninspiring, with only a handful of Youngs casks and some other stuff like Meantime, Camden and Aspall cider. This place does pretty well with the food, and they are quite proud of their pies. Decent value, average service. The location is very convenient - just a few minutes south of Oxford Circus by foot. An OK place for a nice meal and a simple pint of ale, but not a must-visit venue by any stretch. |
58 /100 Smack Deli (Restaurant) 26 BINNEY STREET An interesting spot. The food here is great - it mostly revolves around lobster. Fresh, good value. Quick service, plenty of seating. Impressively, they serve good draft beer; on my visit they had two staple Siren beers (an IPA and an APA). They have a fairly sleek draft system in place, and they even offer the beers to take away in swing-tops. So, I am somewhat surprised by the lack of variety. It really wouldn’t be hard to add a few bottles, for example. Perhaps they will improve selection at some point. For now, this is just a good place to grab a meal and have a nice beer while you’re at it. |
66 /100 Iron Duke (Fuller’s) (Bar) 11 AVERY ROW, MAYFAIR A fairly typical nice enough Fullers pub, typical Mayfair suits crowd. Not the widest range of beers I’ve seen in a Fullers house. Fine. |
72 /100 Iron Duke (Fuller’s) (Bar) 11 AVERY ROW, MAYFAIR Nice business pub. Came in at 12 o’clock as it opens. Quickly filled op with people. Started with a Pride; the house hold beer. Clean stuff. Good wine list as well. Went for the taps. |
72 /100 Selfridges & Co Ltd (Beer Store) 400 OXFORD STREET A fridge of beer in the Selfridges food hall and also have some more different beers in the basement level in among all the wines. Not the largest selection ever, but they have a nice variety of London brewers and a decent international selection. |
56 /100 Audley (Taylor Walker) (Bar) 41-43 MOUNT STREET LONDON Decor is quite nice - red and brown theme. Busy place. Staff friendly. Four cask ales on. Soft music. Not interesting for a beer enthusiast. |
50 /100 Punch Bowl (Bar) 41 FARM ST In a quiet part of central London. Inviting exterior. Lots of dark wood inside - quite nice surroundings. Friendly service. 3 cask ales. Something a little depressing about the atmosphere. Nice place, but not that interesting for a beer hunter. |
48 /100 Guinea (Young’s) (Bar) 30 BRUTON PLACE Visited a while ago, catching up on the rating. In a quiet part of town. Youngs on Cask, standard stuff on keg. Decent decor - was expecting something more interesting given the history. |
54 /100 10 STAFFORD ST 5 cask ales, fairly modern despite the historical links, staff fairly friendly. Nothing too exciting for the beer geek. |
54 /100 John Lewis Food Hall (Beer Store) 300 OXFORD STREET A large John Lewis / Waitrose food hall, most easily accessed from the back entrance on Henrietta Place. They have about 80 bottles and there wasn’t anything much of interest when I popped in apart from a couple of beers from Wold Top and quite a large range from Bath Ales. The rest were things like Fullers and Wychwood which are easily found elsewhere.
(Visited 11 March 2014). |
72 /100 Coach & Horses (Bar) 5 BRUTON STREET Really attractive and unique exterior, interior pretty nice too. Its a nice pub to visit after you’ve finished a spot of shopping. Pretty good selection of beers. |
48 /100 Audley (Taylor Walker) (Bar) 41-43 MOUNT STREET LONDON Not too bad, Punk IPA on draught. However, called time without doing last orders - cardinal sin! |
38 /100 Audley (Taylor Walker) (Bar) 41-43 MOUNT STREET LONDON A worse than average Taylor Walker pub. There’s usually only Bombardier on cask. No rotating guests. This place is of no interest to travelling beer enthusiasts and should be scrubbed from the database. |
60 /100 Masons Arms (Bar) 38 MADDOX ST A fine older building that is apparently over 300 years old, enclosed by the newer constructions around it. This Greene King pub thankfully is as traditional looking as the building and its a low-key place to enjoy a drink or two which is unusual given Oxford and Regent Street are very close by. There’s always ales here and the range is mostly from their own brewery. |
64 /100 Clarence (Nicholson’s) (Bar) 4 DOVER STREET Visited this place a number of times when I used to work on Sackville Street just up the road. This is a small pub but always busy in the week with suits from the various offices around here so it may be standing room only until the masses decide to finally head home. It’s also just off Piccadilly so the odd tourist will venture in here too although it feels more genuine than the tourist joints at the top end of Piccadilly.. It’s well decked out in a traditional style as you’d expect from a Nicholson pub and there’s a fine selection of real ales available too. |
