“Friendly little craft beer bar located halfway along the curry house section of Brick Lane. 3 kegs and a very interesting selection of 60 or so bottles and cans. Friendly landlord. Seemed like the sort of place I'd like to make my local if I lived nearby and could afford it - unfortunately the prices seemed high even by London standards. If money's no object, you're sure to get some brews here that are difficult to get hold of elsewhere in the UK, especially in the lambic and sour department.“

“Quite different to there new venture Kill the Cat at Spitalfields Market, this is a small cosy old school game playing bar with 3 taps & a decent bottle/can selection. Friendly service“

“A enjoyable modern bar with a good selection of a dozen or so taps. Some interesting bottles/cans on shelving to take away. Friendly service.“

“Visited 15/3/2024. Great addition to the Kill The Cat empire, nice modern setting on the edge of the lively Spitalfields market. Better range of taps than Brick Lane (which it's very different to) and for me a better can/bottle selection too (excluding the ridiculous range of bombers Brick Lane stock). Didn't know it had been opened until recently, definitely one I'll return too“

“Dropped in at around 16:00 last Tuesday. The bar is located in a redeveloped end of the market. Modern purpose built units all holiday more upmarket boho-esque coffee shops, etc. When I arrived I thought the bar may have been closed. It has a glass front but was very dark looking. There were some people inside but the surrounding tables had boxes sat on them. I guess they must have just got a delivery and it's just not a well lit bar because they were happy to serve me when I went in. Two of their own contract brewed beers plus some.devent options from London and further afield. Would have stayed for a few more thirds but had to leave. They also have a full array of bottles. Did seem a tad pricy but I guess £20 US imported is now somewhat normal. Just bought the new Pillars Eisbock. Decent place. Took about 5 minutes max to walk from Liverpool Street so it's good to have a modern beer option in the area (OK there is the other KtC but that's slightly further away). But apart from the couple talking about their kid's school it was kinda dead. Hopefully more lively later in the week. Polite staff.“

“Очень хороший выбор пива, именно что самое лучше с крафта на рынке Англии собрано тут. Место по локации так себе, не самое приятное. Можно посидеть на улице, но не особо хочется. Нормальный магазин в целом.“

“Visited on a week day afternoon March 2023, a nice little beer shop with 3 taps operating during our visit, taps/counter on the right as you enter and cans/bottles the side. A small tasting area with stalls at the back where we has a couple of third pours from the taps. Guy working there was knowledgeable and friendly, prices about what you expect for craft nowadays, overall nice little place and worth a visit.“

“Cool spot in this little alcove off of Brick Lane that is pedestrian only and has lots of communal tables in the alley -- whole area is owned by the same owners apparently. There are 10 taps, nothing overly special when I went, but we found a couple of interesting things. No 1/3 pints, which is lame, so just 1/2 and full pints. Prices were exorbitant: about 10 quid for our two 1/2 pints. Nice spot, friendly service. If you're doing some Indian food here, grab some beer here and at Kill the Cat before/after.“

“Small bottle shop and taproom in Brick Lane next to endless curry houses, so a good places to get your craft beer on. They have just 4 taps, with 1/3, 1/2 and full pints available. Bottle selection is small but well-curated, with even some nice lambics available. Very friendly guy who runs the place. Not worth a special trip, but if you're in Brick Lane, it's definitely worth a look.“

“Visited here on an evening wander from Brick Lane. Located close to an area with photogenic narrow walkways full of small restaurants seemingly popular with business types and daters with a pre-theatre feel. The pub itself is a smart-looking place, with various seating areas though we didn't explore further than the first room. Expected the cask and keg list to remain firmly in the trad camp, but there are one or two craftier options (fruit sour / IPA / stout). Mainly London breweries. The bar is split between two rooms, the other room housing the 5 or 6 cider options. No lilleys, but most are fruited, with a couple of decent proper ciders. Overall, doesn't come across as a Greene King pub whatsoever, in fact it was a shock to see it is now. Serves standard pub food, but does have a price to match the area. Definitely worth a stop.“

“Decent little shop. Not a huge number of beers but it is an interesting selection, with some things one wouldn't likely find much in London. Prices are a bit above average for London bottle shops, though that is perhaps a function of the shop's location. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.“

“Possibly my favourite drinking hole in London. 3 taps and around 100 bottles and cans in the place. There are essentially two table; the bar, which can fit around 5 or maybe 6 people, and then the big table at the back, which looks like it should have a cadaver on it (it has a plug hole in the middle, which should not have liquids poured in it!). It has a sensational atmosphere! It's got a real locals vibe, but in the most welcoming way. I don't live in East London, but I still think of this as the place where I'm more a 'local' than anywhere else. Both the staff and regulars are super welcoming to anyone who comes in, from anywhere. Dan (the manager) runs a really fun place to hang out, try beers, and have a good natter. A great selection of cans and bottles, including a good number of big sharing ones (or ageing). Three taps, which almost always have interesting things on. They do charge a £1 corkage fee for drinking in. Pretty decent prices, for the range and keeping in mind it's London. If I could only drink in one establishment... this might be it!“

“Strange that there's only one review of this place (and that is from 2016). While not an obvious beer destination, this lovely corner pub is certainly worth checking out despite the fact that it's kind of on its own out here, neither being Shoreditch nor Surprised proper. Four cask and 10 keg (ok, five of these are Camden Town but there's also quite a lot of micro stuff) are complemented by a large-ish bottle list. Lots of low/no alcohol stuff for Dryanuary, and to be fair they tend to shy away from the biggest beers. Very reasonable and comfortable. I took to this pub.“

“This pub is about a 45 second walk from the craft beer shop Kill the Cat, but the experiences couldn't be more different. There are five cask ales on, all decent beers but widely available, so this ain't a tickers' pub. It's cosy (crowded) but there's a reason: the beer is on point and cheap, they do reasonable and simple lunches, and they're as friendly as you're likely to find. My quick half of ESB was perfect. Take some time out, put your ticking notebook away, and remind yourself why you started this hobby in the first place.“

“Tiny little shop on Brick Lane. Loads of good packaged beers to drink or take away (most aren't chilled), plus three on draft: on my visit these were provided by Fierce, the Kernel and the excellent French outfit Piggy. They are friendly and they know their stuff. Prices are indeed dear but this is London. A great place to stop in the area, or to grab a beer for your curry later!“

“Visited 10/12/2019. Has long been on my list of places I wanted to visit. Compact place. 3 taps which were ok but not that special but the c150 different bottles/can were a really interesting selection. Some were local/national, but a lot were international beers some of which were from breweries I’d not seen anywhere before - France featured unusually prominently, also New Zealand and US. Came away with a half dozen, could have grabbed more. Service was good. Clientele eclectic. Prices not too bad. Good visit.“

“Visited 10/12/2019. Food orientated. Cask beer selection was quite uninteresting. Couldn’t see much of interest bottle wise either. But they are clearly doing something right judging by how busy it was. Just not a place to seek out for beer only.“

“Visited 10.01.19. A small, but superb, bottle shop. Three ales on kegs and all cans and bottles can be consumed on the premises. There was a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere in the shop at my visit. It was quite packed (perhaps with ten people), and the bloke working there involved all in conversation. It seemed to be a popular shop and meeting point in the neighbourhood. Bottle selection was not large, but well selected with many up-and coming micros. Most of the selection was UK breweries, but there was also a selection of good international beer.“

“This place feels locked in the 70's, dark and hazy red velvet interior. Selection was almost all macros so doesn't hold much interest for beer tickers. It's near a very trendy shopping street in East London which seems to be its biggest claim to fame.“

“This pub is behind Liverpool Street station, another place that predominantly caters for the after work crowd. Most of the cask beers are from London based brewers, the keg selection wasn’t wildly interesting, cask ciders are also served. A decent selection for a GK pub but rather pricey“

“Small, but well formed bottleshop on Brick Lane. A good selection of UK, European & world beers including some rarer finds. Three taps serving. “A great little bottle shop not far from Spitalfields market. 3 taps and a huge variety of bottled and canned beers. The staff is very friendly, talkative and knowledgeable. Not many seats, but cozy. The beer selection changes very rapidly as they don't order loads of anything. The sell beer mostly from British craft breweries, but they have exports too (US, Denmark, Sweden, etc.). Prices are not super high either. Highly recommended if you are nearby. “

“Cozy little pub not far from the business district. Traditional British character with a fireplace and some old photos (plus a cat). The cask ale I tried was in a very good condition. “Have visited a few times as it’s very close to Liverpool Street Station (my station to back home from London) most recently Saturday 10th Dec 2016. A CAMRA GBG pub. Has a decent range of real ale and craft beers on cask/tap, good food, nice relaxed ambiance (unless the trains aren’t running - then it’s rammed). My only complaint is the pricing which is very steep even for London at £11.50 for 2 pints of quite ordinary circa 4% abv beers. That aside, it’s pretty good.“

“Stumbled upon this place down an alley near Liverpool St. During the day it’s nice and quiet but its central location means it will probably be chocabloc in the evening. Quite gloomy, which I like. Playing old wartime music. 14 beers on, split between keg and cask. Keg beers were pretty standard from Camden etc but there seems to be a good range of casks - certainly plenty new for me anyway. Also 6 cask ciders. All in all it’s a decent little spot which I will certainly come back to.“

“On the corner of a delightful old building this ground floor pub/bar is trendily shabby. Being a sister pub of the well respected Three Johns in Islington the beers here, 4 real ales and the rest mostly craft keg, the beers are well chosen so good choice and above all good quality. Staff friendly and knowledgeable. Situated just north of Spitalfields market and equally just south of Shoreditch High St station on the overground. Well worth a visit for the beer fan.“

“Not much choice and one of the three ales showing as on was not! £2,70 a half of Trumans Zephyr 4.4% is a rip off. Commercial Tavern 2 blocks north along Commercial St offers far better quality and choice at lower prices... a no-brainer!“

Culpeper (Bar)
40 COMMERCIAL STREET

I visited Culpepers on Friday 18th December 2015. I had never been here before and yet last week Loz and I had a curry very close to here. This place is quite easy to find, it’s located a 2 minute walk from Aldgate East Tube, just a short way up Commercial Road, on the right hand side on a corner as you head up towards Shoreditch.

Inside this place it is really nice, good money has been spent either restoring or by using reclaimed furniture and fixings, the parquet floors are nice and one thing that is original is the lovely glazed ceramic tiling on the outside. I sat on a metal stool at a window at one of the full length leaners drinking my beer and watching the world rush by outside. Looking back inside long old refurbished tables had been given a new life here, and the now all too familiar exposed brickwork on the back wall, it looks like a lot of money been spent here. The bar was centrally located and the seating wrapped around it like a sort of horseshoe to almost creates two separate areas.

The food looked good here, the fish and chips smelt and looked great, pies were a good size and looked home made as well. The beer choice was a little limited. I only saw a couple of handpumps but the reviewer below states four, it was busy on my visit so they are probably right. I had London Beer Company Chelsea Morning which was on great condition. I wouldn’t imagine that this will interest the avid ticker but for a nice pub, friendly atmosphere, good service and somewhere to sit for 30mins it was one of my favourite pubs of the day.“
