This was one of the few Christmas stouts I came across from my local bottle shop (Vinmonopolet). Previously I had had only drunk one beer from this brewery and that was their Imperial stout, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I therefore looked forward to trying their christmas stout.

It’s not as robust or as complex as their imperial stout, but it’s a nice one nonetheless. Drinking the beer I could sense flavours of chocolate, coffee, some licorice and spice. It has a decent amount of bitterness and a long aftertaste. A nice beer for this festive season.

4 finger beige head, black body. Nose: Cloves, cardamom, ginger-brad, licorice, coffee and chocolate. Taste: Cloves, cardamom, licorice, malt, ginger, dark chocolate, soy-sauce,milk-chocolate,thin ferry-coffee and ginger-bread.
Semi-long ending with semi-long/low bitterness.

Decent, if somewhat unbalanced. Big amount of fennel, which dominates the beer. Some roasted malt. Medium body, too little to carry the fennel.

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2016 Bottle. 7.6%. Best before 08.08.16. Pours almost black with a big, fluffy beige/tan head. Good lacing. Sweet, dried fruit aroma with anise and fennel. Light tart note as it warms; berries and slightly overripe fruit. Flavour is sweet and fruity with anise and fennel as well, the latter two being more outspoken here. Bitter with a light hoppy note in the background. Finish is rather bitter, with more anise and fennel, though feeling a bit more explicitly liquorice-like here. Lingering alcohol burn and a light grassy note. A bit too much carbonation. Overall good; well-made and -balanced, though cloying in the long run. 07.06.16.

craftbeersweden (708) - SWEDEN - MAY 15, 2016
Bought at Systembolaget, Sweden in November 2013. This bottle has been resting in my beercellar for 2 year an 6 months.

Best before: September 17, 2014.

The stout pours clear, dark brown with a two finger high beige, head. Lacing stays on the glass.

Nose: Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and coffee ground.

Taste: Chocolate, cacao beans, oak, roasted malt, coffee, molasses, anise and fennel.

Mouth: Complex structure. Medium to light carbonation. Smooth taste.

This beer has definitely grown better with aging. Not as aggressive as when it was new. Very mature and smooth. The star anise and fennel seeds is there in the background just lifting the taste a bit.
