2.7 BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien (2020) On tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas, pours a deep dark mahogany, tiny beige head. Aroma is full of balsamic, Worcestershire sauce, and a touch of barrel. Flavour is pure acetic acid, with balsamic and Worcestershire sauce… there’s not much redeeming quality to this. Super acetic, with little depth. Not impressed. Thursday, March 7, 2024

3.6 BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien Grand Cru (2014) - Like a VirJin Amber, hazy, no head. The aroma has a nice woody character, subtle balsamic, mild barrelly vinegar. On the palate, it's tart, but restrained in that tartness. Sweet malts, good complexity of barrel character... I imagine that was the vin jaune. Sunday, January 28, 2024

3.8 BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien Grand Cru (2014) - Like a VirJin 375mL bottle, pours a clear dark amber with a tiny beige head. Aroma reveals balsamic, some sweet dessert wine, and a touch of oak. Flavour is tart, acetic and complex, with plenty of sweet dessert wine, balsamic, tartness, and oak. It's definitely acetic but fittingly so. Finishes tart, acetic and sweet vinous. Very good. 3.6 BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien (2022) Expectedly short, expensive pour @Silver Stamp, Vegas. Russet brown, hazy, kinda frothy. Sweet n sour, savory, Worcestershire, lemon, watermelon, lightly oxidized nose. Lemon, old ale, old wood, old apples, sherry, red wine, cherry skin pith, soft earthy bitterness is enough. Frothy, thick, sour slurry, always perfect acid that isn't too vinegar based. Not amaze-balls like a few years past, but good. Monday, December 18, 2023

3.2 BFM La Saison √Rouges - Racines Rouges hazy yellow orange brown with nearly no head. the small head is white. sour and fruity aroma with some sweet earthy spicy notes too. flavor is quite sour for a saison, not very spicy for a saison, it's a bit weird with the sweet sort of malty earthy spicy thing going on, and then the quite sour sourness. I can't help but wonder if it was intended to be this sour, or if it is sort of an accident. Sunday, October 8, 2023

4 BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien Grand Cru (2015) Like A Candle In the Wind Brewed in 2015, Bottled in 2017; sampled September 2023. A steady poor from the bottle produces a quarter finger thick, large bubbled, pale Amber tinged head that dissipates fairly quickly. Need beer is a concentrated amber brown color, that shows a somewhat hazy, bright red and rich amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells tart, with a little bit of spicy acetic character, lots of fresh cut woody notes, rich vinous red wine aromatics, very bright red wine fruit notes, spicy oak, and as the beer warms up, lots of toasted, whole grain, malt aromatics. The flavor has a solid tartness to it up front that morphs into a touch of spicy vinegar like acidity in the finish. The body of the beer has a soft viscosity to it, just enough to coat the pallet, but finishes pretty light, and the carbonation provides a nicely prickly, but not fizzy, texture and a bit of carbonic light that accentuates the acidity here. The flavor is also quite vinous, rich red wine flavors, lots of toasted oak, spicy oak notes, a touch of vanillin, jammy red wine berry flavors, and tart tannic currant notes. There is a touch of supporting multi-character here that accentuates the toasted oak notes, it adds a bit of savory leaning toasted grain character to the vinous notes. I really like that the acetic vinegar character here is kept nicely tamed, it adds a welcome addition to the flavor, without being overwhelming. This remains a very well executed and tasty beer, I always like having one when I get a chance, even if this has been sitting in my beer fridge for many years. Sunday, October 1, 2023
