Hi,

I was wondering if anyone bothers moderating the place listing for the more obscure (in terms of beer) cities.

For example, the listings for Yerevan ( http://www.ratebeer.com/places/city/yerevan/0/11/) give 32 locations, out of which at least 15 don’t like much like beer destinations at all (coffee shops, Chinese restaurants, even a children’s cafe...).

It looks like someone has just added all these places from the site https://yvn.reservin.am/en/. Perhaps it would make sense to remove the places that have no ratings, or at least the ones that clearly focused on beer.

Apart from this, adding lots of uninteresting places (which happens quite often), there are some user mobs that take care of promoting some lplaces and giving really bad ratings to others. Most of those users do only register and rate the same day, and then just fade away.

Maybe a more strict policy on rating places could be implemented. I´m not talking about having 50 places rated before your rating counts, but beers. Since it is not mandatory to introduce text in a place rating, someone can easyly rate 50 places in few minutes. Nevertheless, rating beers is more time consuming. IMO asking for several hundred beers rated before a user can rate places makes sense. This would show that someone is really interested in beer, and not in some other obscure interests.

I would imagine that places like Armenia would be very difficult to monitor. Interesting though it may be, it’s not on my bucket list.

People do odd things though. Recently someone entered a whole bunch of ALKOs (every one, maybe?) for different cities in Finland, so now there’s a shedload of ALKOs in Finland with 0 rates.

I don’t know why anyone would do this, even for stats as adding places gives you nothing.

You are right of course, Armenia isn’t really a big beer destination.

I only noticed these superfluous places because I am planning a trip to Armenia and Georgia - opened the Tbilisi and then the Yerevan page and was surprised by how Yerevan has double the number of places, despite the city (and country) not being known for its beer scene.

Perhaps it would make sense for new places to be somehow highlighted differently and carry a message like "This place has yet to be reviewed by users/or confirmed by an admin", which would then disappear after a review has been added/an admin has confirmed that the place exists and actually has something to do with beer (a quick search on the internet seems to be enough in most cases).

Not sure about requiring a certain amount of beers in order to rate places - some people (obviously a minority) prefer to just rate places... one guy from Russia for example has rated 787 places and 0 beers. Perhaps a better idea would be to impose a time limit, i.e. it’s possible to add places straight away, but new users would have to wait for a certain amount of time until they can start rating places.

The problem is that as long as they serve beer they’re allowed. Feel free to post a list of all the places that don’t meet that criteria.

I think the criteria are that they have to serve craft beer, and be open for business. So a bar that serves only Bud Light would not be allowed

Ok. To start with, these places don’t serve any alcohol at all (I checked the menu).

Not sure who the mod for Armenia is, but I’m sure he will be all over this when he sobers up a bit. Our policy is to correct errors when they become known. There are many shops, hotels and restaurants that think they can advertise for free by listing their bogus place here, its an ongoing problem.

That’s pretty subjective though. If we’re going by the BA guidelines and calling anything non-macro a "craft" beer then the bar with 4 taps: Bud Light, MGD, Shocktop, and Sam Adams Boston Lager would be valid here.
