I guess quite a few of us would be happy to attend both, and there are a few weeks between them.

Well, we try to have one large gathering that attracts the biggest, most diverse group possible. Plenty of other countries have smaller gatherings throughout the year, which often attract some out-of-towners. But in order to get the biggest turnout at a single event, and that is the goal of RBESG, we can’t have competing events. Very few people have the time or finances to do two weekends like this so close together (unless you happen to be a local).
