Saison 1900
Very yeasty aroma with taste to match, providing its only flavour dimension, though perhaps I could be convinced there’s some orange in here somewhere. Like a Belgian Blue Moon.

Dark golden, or more appropiately - thickened honey-like, with a rich creamy white head kept alive by a lot of streams of bubbles. Rich honey on the nose, with hints of acacia flower, fresh oranges and even birch sap. Some Belgian-style sugariness, some bit of spicy hop, spicy yeast, white peppercorn. Sweet from the start, with a solid maltiness, rather than just the honey hinted on the nose. Grainy biscuits with caramel and thickened honey on top, syrupy, slightly floral, with a mild spiciness too it, which is amplified by peppery yeasts towards the end. Some yellow apple mash, some spicy pear and quince, all of them overripe and somewhat juicy. Finishes with a whiff of European hop. Aftertaste has lingering honey-covered sweet fruitiness, plus some alcohol building up with each new sip. Medium to heavy body, prickly carbonation, but still rather sticky. Nice intense honey, but it’s a bit unbalanced towards the sweet side. Still, not too heavy to drink. Good one.

33cl bottle from Jumbo Supermarket (Amsterdam) and poured into a tegu glass on 19-May-2017. Clear pale amber colour with a medium sized white head. Aroma of bread, Belgian yeast and malt. Medium body and carbonation. Taste of sweet malt, spices and yeast. Close in character to a tripel, but but gets more hop prominent as the beer warms. Light to medium bitterness with a sweetish finish.

Dark brown colored, medium beige head. Aroma is of some malt, caramel, light coffee, dark fruity estery, apple, licorice and aniseed quite strong. Taste is medium+ sweet malt, bit sugary, some caramel, some apple and fruity esters, again strong aniseed and some licorice, bit alcohol, sweet finish. Medium+ bodied, soft carbonation, creamy. Lefebvre Hopus Primeur 2017
Pours with the expected motherload of heads, stubborn retention, leaving a silky, dense, cappuccino-like foam later on. Crunchy grass and fresh floral hops, lemongrass, celery, faint cilantro, mixed crushed peppercorns and honeycomb. A sharp, fresh aroma. The taste doesn’t take you slowly at all. A lot of spicy-peppery Belgian yeasty notes from the start, backed by a lot of spicy, fresh hop, with a specific "European" vibe to it, but not the regular earthy British notes. Floral, spicy, almost like Saaz hops on steroids, especially considering the rather "noble", tho intense bitterness in the finish. Faintly metallic, i might add. Soft honeyed grain in the back, but not enough to make up for a solid malt backbone. Aftertaste has pink/white peppercorn, dried petals and lingering spicy hops. The bitterness remains manageable, somehow. Medium body, really high carbonation, rather aggressive. Alcohol’s there, but feels... late for the party. A solid traditional Belgian IPA, as ironic as that sounds. One of my favourites, still.

5/V/17 - 33cl swing-top bottles from Geers (Oostakker) @ Abeels visiting (home) - BB: 24/V/18 (2017-575) Thanks to all for sharing the beers!

Clear pale yellow beer, huger very fizzy white soapy head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: some citrus, bit grassy, qutie fruity, peaches, hint of banana. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: quite some citrus, pretty bitter, hoppy, grassy, grapefruit, some lychee. Aftertaste: bitter, citrus, grapefruit, little sweet, some yeast touch, banana peel, bit malty, grains, grassy touch, very dry and bitter finish. One of the best Hopus Primeurs so far, I’d say?

Lefebvre Hopus Primeur 2017
Stumbled on this new rendition of Hopus Primeur in a pub in Ghent. Very thick and frothy, inches high, foamy, egg-white head leaving nice cobweb lacing around the edge, sitting on top of a lightly hazy straw blonde beer with greenish tinge and fierce sparkling sustaining the pillowy head. Aroma of soap, grass, straw, banana and even light bubblegum, hard pear, dried field flowers, white celery, white bread and a vague whiff of DMS but nothing too offensive; old-fashioned noble hops elegantly crown an otherwise typical Belgian tripel nose. Crisp, fruity onset, very sharply carbonated and strongly numbing, adding a sourish touch to an otherwise moderately sweetish flavor of banana ester, pear and some pineapple; soapy mouthfeel, full grainy and lightly ’white’ bready malt sweetish middle. Ends malty but well-soaked in a grassy, very floral and mildly spicy ’noble’ hop bitterness, a bit quinine-like in the end and adequately bittering with that celery hint lingering alongside some vaguely warming, but otherwise well-hidden alcohol. Thoroughly Belgian even if ’hop forward’, not fundamentally different from previous editions with that same soapy quality and banana ester, but seemingly a tad hoppier and more floral, so in that sense a slight improvement compared with last year’s Primeur as far as I’m concerned.

Lefebvre Hopus Primeur 2017
Bottle. Pours strawyelow, rather unclear. big white head, rather unstable though. Smell is subtile hops, more to the spiced hoppy side. Somewhat fruity by the yeast, and mild honey aroma from the malts. Taste is creamy, mild bitterness, bit grassy/spicy by the hops, that remain very, very gentle ( and creamy ) mild metallic notes (that do not bother just yet) . Mild maltyness. Bit yeasty, as is to be expected form a Belgian beer, and thus some (very mild) fruity esthers. To high, yet very fine carbonation. Decent MF. The creamyness is very nice in this beer, and makes the beer still quite enjoyable, even though it’s strongly overcarbonated to me. I would have liked some more hoparoma, perhaps a stronger aromatic hop, or more/longer dryhopping. still Decent though !

Lefebvre Floreffe Blonde
Bottle of 33cl, in a Trappist glass; from the fridge. A beautiful blond colour defines that beer, with a nice white foamy head. The aroma is sweet and malty. And that unfortunatly is also the taste : sweet. Not too much sweet, but the point is there : for an blonde d’abbaye, the sweetness here is too much. Drink it if you are looking for an abber blond with a relatively sweet taste.

Aroma of ripe fruit, ananas above all, then yellow fruit and some cereal at last. You might think it’s good but there’s actually something unpleasant in it I can’t explain... something like rotten fruit. Magnificent golden color, very clear. Sweet, medium body, oily, lively, the same unpleasant feel of rotten fruit, astringent finish. Maybe it’s the worst tripel I’ve ever tasted. Do a favor to yourself: dont’ buy it.

Bouteille 33cl, Lille.

Lefebvre Floreffe Blonde
Copenhagen 6/5 2017. 33 cl bottle with swing cap from "Den Gamle Købmand"’s big box of offers due to being slightly too old. This has "Best Before" date July 2016. The usual Abbey on the label. It seems that these Monks just can’t stop brewing beer. Pours dirty dark golden yellow with big white head. Some clumps of what I suppose is yeast hanging around. Settles as 1 cm thick dense layer of foam. Lacing on the side the glass. Aroma is malty caramel with acidic notes. Odor of the kind Glue you need when you are trying to get a self-assembly kit to resemble an Airplane - Oh those sweet memories. Low carbonation and medium thick creamy palate. Flavor is medium sweet with a sugary feel. Followed by medium sour bitterness. Aftertaste is lightly bitter and slightly chemical. Not a typical Belgian Beer - and I am a bit bothered by the Chemical tang.

PREZENTACJA: trochę uciekło z butelki, tak brązowe że aż czarne w szkle, piana ogromna, szybko opada do 5 mm, oszczędnie oblepia ściankę;
AROMAT: silne żelazo i mosiądz, za nim cukier kandyzowany, brzoskwinia, pomarańcza, czereśnia, śliwka renkloda;
ODCZUCIE: ciało niskie ku średniemu, bardzo mocno nasycone, gryzie w język i gardło, mocno się po nim odbija;
SMAK: żelazo i mosiądz, karmel, cukier trzcinowy, czerwone owoce, czekolada, średnia czekoladowa goryczka, najpierw metalowy potem czekoladowy posmak;
OGÓLNIE: niezbyt ciekawa pozycja; nuty metaliczne grają tu pierwsze i drugie skrzypce, dopiero w dalszym planie można doszukać się nieco przyjemniejszych wrażeń w postaci ciemnych owoców i czekolady.

Saison 1900
I’m not about this life. Kind of the lager of saisons. Nothing really comes out here through the flavor, something like a nonbitter hoppiness with an aftertaste of sweet. Again, a characteristic redolent of a soso lager.

Strong Ale particolaramemte beverina. Schiuma vivace e abbastanza persistente. Colore giallo antico, molto antico... tendente all’ambrato. Piuttosto torbida, poca luce filtrante.

Super young cheesy yeast, lactic, honey... Interesting but odd and not quite my thing. Taste is better once you get halfway the bottle. Pours hazy yellow with a frothy, lasting, white head. The aroma contains hops, grass, herbs, earth, yeast and some fruit. It tastes light sweet and only medium bitter with a long duration. Lively carbonation, medium body, slick texture. Not as bitter or complex as an IPA. A strange brew, I think. Really lacking the features it promises to have.
