Apple Wine in the US is typically a hard cider fortified with cane sugar or other fermentables to be stronger, like 12-14% ABV (compared to an Hard Cider which is usually 5-7% ABV just from sugars in the apple juice)
Generally, the term is meant for an higher abv still cider.
