A variant is (1) a spin-off of an existing, non-retired base product that is rateable, and (2) typically has a name that is similar to the base product, e.g. base: Beefman’s Big Black Barleywine, and variant: Beefman’s Big Black Barleywine - Sauterne Barrels. Typical variants feature a specific Dry Hopping, Barrel-Aging or Flavoring compared to the regular existing product.
