Ah goddamn goddamn! That’s what she said when she brought this out from behind the barn...I was too busy distilling and drinking libational maximus to over hear the fact that oh my god, there it was, and it was fucking GREAT.

Bottle. Pitch black and viscous pour with a minimal beige head that dissipates quickly and leaves a minimal ring of lacings. The smell is dominated by smooth bourbon aromas, wood and coffee. Notes of nuts, chocolate syrup, fudge, vanilla and muted roasted malts. Actually quite balanced. The flavor is rather sweet with lots of coffee and bourbon character. The body is not as full as I had thought it would be, but the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. The chocolate is more pronounced in the taste than in the smell. Notes of woody bourbon, powdered chocolate, lots of vanilla, oak and roasted malts. Hints of licorice and fudge. Perhaps a note of tar. The finish is bitter and has a nice warming feeling to it. All in all, surprisingly balanced. Not the big bourbon bomb I thought t would be. For a beer this big it’s very easy to drink.

This year’s batch picked up from the brewery. A - Pours black and viscous with no head to speak of even as I poured more aggressively at the end. It could definitely use more head but still beautiful. S - Coffee and bourbon. Definitely a good breakfast. Slight malt quality to it. Time for my catch phrase. I wish they made candles that smelled like this. T - Bourbon, chocolate and coffee. The coffee is by far the strongest flavor. The oak comes through in the aftertaste followed by a bit of burn. Not too much burn though. The lingering taste is just amazing. M - Thick. Very Nice. D - I’m trying not to house this thing. Must... be... strong. The high ABV is definitely not a problem here. Well hidden. This is a great beer. Well worth the 5 hour drive to get a case. Funny though, I remember previous years relieving my neuralgia.

bottle courtesy of coyotehunter, thank ya kindly! pours black wityh a late rising dark brown head that disipates fairly quickly. great stuff, super warming with just the right amount of bourbon flavor, and all the best parts only. a a fair amount of black coffee present too, but just so nicely balanced with everything. the mouth feel is super creamy, incredibly smooth and drinkable. great stuff, i def need more. bordering a 4.7 for me right now, i really need another bottle do determine that! lol!

Compliments of my son, fata2683. This was GREAT! Caramel head with dark brown, almost black body, looked awesome in my tulip glass. Aroma of whiskey and coffee. Flavors were a myriad of mouthwatering delectables, including, but not necessarily limited to coffee, sweet chocolate, vanilla, molasses, and bourbon. I have enjoyed all of the Founder’s ales I’ve tasted, but I believe this one to be my favorite.

2008 bottle. Pours black with slight tan head that fades quickly. Strong coffee nose with plenty of alcohol. Well balanced flavors of coffee, bitter chocolate, and bourbon. Low carbonation. Classic brew......

2007 bottle thanks to shigadeyo! Pours jet black with nice finger of caramel colored head. Aroma is thick with coffee and vanilla, with some chocolate and bourbon. Taste up front is very strong coffee, working into bourbon and chocolate with some smooth vanilla, and finishes nicely with a sweet chocolate and molasses taste with a hint of smoke at the end. What a fantastic brew.

(Sample Date: 7/18/2009 Source:Other) At Immy’s. Big fresh coffee bean aroma with wood and whiskey notes and hints of chocolate in aroma. Very dark almost black with small tan head. Medium to full body and full creamy mouth. Lots of coffee and chocolate in flavor with some woodiness and whiskey especially in the finish. Nice balance of flavors. Finish is quite bitter, dry, and lightly astringent.
