He’s saying the same things on the radio commentary There was some comment just now on BBC that one of the teams weren’t happy with the choice of ref, but to be honest I don’t pay much attention to the commentary - it’s just part of the background noise like the crowd chants. What is the point of commentary anyway. We don’t get it at live matches. And we don’t need it. Why do TV people feel they need to talk all the time and tell you what you can see. When watching the rugby I have the ref’s mike on only, as at least what he says is important, and I’d rather hear him say it at the time he says it than have the commentators tell me what he said five minutes later.

I noticed that when Spain were forced into the long ball during the game that it actually produced some chances. I think there’s a way of playing the long ball that can be very effective, and when the long ball is actually a directed long pass it is a stunning weapon in your arsenal. If you’re just booting the ball upfield in a desperate attempt to relieve pressure then it’s likely to come straight back at you.
