3.4 Upland Dragonfly India Pale Ale 16 oz draft at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was my celebratory beer following Marquette’s win and advancement to the Sweet Sixteen. The pour is a clear orange, golden copper with a small off white head. The aroma is caramel malt, floral and a soft pineapple orange fruit. The taste is a nice blend between malt backbone and the floral and fruit sweetness, very much old school IPA flavors. The palate is medium to light bodies, softer carbonation and a malt fruit softly sweet finish. Monday, March 25, 2024

3.5 Upland Hoosier Gameday Lager On tap at The Beer Cellar-Glen Ellyn, IL. as a 9 oz. serving to a house snifter, showing a clear & bright, golden hue, with a bubbly layer of soft white froth, and ribbons & spray as lacing. The nose was mild malt/grain, touches of yeast & breadiness, some dried fruit that presented hints of skins & ripeness, and just a tad of caramel sweetness. Medium bodied, with decent carbonation, the taste was similar, with a bit less expression that was dominated by some earthiness to a lingering bitterness. Tuesday, November 21, 2023

2.9 Upland Hoosier Gameday Lager Pours clear gold with a two finger white head. It has a mild, grainy malt aroma. It tastes of grainy, bready malt and a little hops for balance. Light bodied and easy drinking, it’s fine for what it is, though it’s not really my thing. Wednesday, November 8, 2023

4 Upland Blueberry 750mL bottled 11/13/2019, drunk 5/5/23. Clear, blueberry pulp-tinted with a pinkish color and a small, pinkish head. Quite acidic in the nose with a good mix of fruit acidity, strong lactic acidity, moderate brett and minimal acetic. Some oak, with tons of lush blueberry fruit character and nutty and lightly white bread/honey-like malts. Clean, no alcohol. In the mouth it's full of blueberry. Pretty cool, as blueberry has been the most difficult fruit to get great expression from, in my experience. And this is four years old and still shows a ton of it? Wow. Noticeable oak, much more than in traditional lambics, though it's not unpleasant. Big lactic acidity as well as the blueberry fruit. It's missing any sense of funk/barnyard, but other than that is clean, well-attenuated, soft and malty with excellent fruit. Saturday, May 6, 2023

4.8 Upland Darken Dark Wild Ale Procured at La Bodega from Riverside, California for $14.99, Darken is a Flanders Oud Bruin crafted with ginger, coriander, grains of paradise, star anise, and black pepper, and aged in oak barrels brewed by Upland Brewing Company from Bloomington, Indiana. The smell of cherries, caramel, chocolate, coriander, a fair musty Brettanomyces yeast funk, and spice are felt upon the nose. The appearance is dark brown that pours a low beige head that dissipates gradually with a decent circular retention remaining and similar lacing. When held up to light, the color shifts to a dark carmine red. Dark mahogany shows when light reflects off the beer. The alcohol content is 9.1%. Cherries slightly tarts the take, sweetens the beverage, and blends with caramel malt. Roasted barley melds with the cherry and caramel malt tandem, which is darkened by a fairly rich chocolate malt. Munich malt gives off a toasted bread taste that broadens the cherry, caramel, and roasted barley combination. Rye lightly spices the malty comprehension along with a candi sugar tinge. Black pepper broadens the malt and roasted barley body, and renders a pine note to the finish. Brettanomyces yeast smoothens the drink, imparts a fair musty funk to the cherry and malt composition, and dries the finish, where plums are easily sensed. Coriander colors the funk, toasted bread, and plum mixture, and accompanied with a gentle ginger spice. Oak imprints a vanilla tint upon the yeast and coriander pair. Grains of paradise applies a nutmeg hue to the caramel, roasted barley, chocolate, and toasted bread body, and gives off a hint of minty cardamom and juniper to the funky yeast, coriander, and vanilla blend. Star anise is distinguished with the funky, toasted bread, ginger, plum, pine, and juniper finish. Darken is a glamorous Flanders Oud Bruin. Caramel, chocolate, and Munich malts, cherries, roasted barley, rye, candi sugar, black pepper, Brettanomyces yeast, plums, coriander, ginger, American oak, grains of paradise, and star anise combines into a beautiful craft beer. Brettanomyces yeast eases the drink as cherries tarts the take. Cherries, caramel, roasted barley, chocolate, toasted bread like Munich malt, rye, the nutmeg aspect of grains of paradise, and candi sugar colors the complexion, followed by the musty funk yeast, plums, piney black pepper, coriander, vanilla like oak, and the minty and juniper elements of the grains of paradise. The malty, roasted barley, and yeasty composition slightly weighs the body, which is accented by rye, black pepper, ginger, and candi sugar. Cherries, toasted bread, funky yeast, plums, ginger, pine, and star anise persists into the relatively dry finish, ensued by coriander, vanilla, mint, and juniper as the finish wanes. The tart is easy to experience, even for a newcomer to sour beer. I treasured each drink, and impressed with the complexity and depth ginger, coriander, grains of paradise, star anise, and black pepper imparts to this barrel aged brew. Cheers. Prost. 4.4 Upland Crimson Small cream head over brown-orange beer, veiled. Vinous, fruity, deep spirit aroma's, maybe Bourbon, but also brandy, fortified wine. Sweet-sour and really portwine-like. Finish has a fine, nice fruity acidity, discreet, but perfect for balancing. Here the Bourbon is slightly more plausible. Feels as slightly diluted portwine. Backthroat serious alcoholheat. Not very carbonated. Superb beer, amazing. I agree with "I sour red /I", NOT with "I Flanders-style /I". Monday, May 1, 2023
