ineedbeer	3.9 Struise Twenty Two Anniversary Ale Poured from a 330 ml bottle, vintage 2022. Aroma is full of roast, dark chocolate and dark caramel. Some burnt sugar and molasses as well. Light anise notes. Medium light alcohol notes. Pours jet black with a large, thick, dark mocha head that recedes slowly to a small, creamy film that lingers. Light lacing and fairly long legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with lots of bitter bakers chocolate, roast, burnt sugar, dark caramel and treacle. Fairly high bitterness and medium low alcohol warmth. Light anise notes. Hints of ash, leather and tobacco. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice Belgian imperial stout. Solid chocolate notes with roast, burnt sugar, molasses and caramel. Fairly bitter to balance the sugar. Really nice mouthfeel.from.a Belgian stout. Thursday, May 9, 2024

Aroma of red & green apple, wet wood, sherry, raisin, ruby port, brioche, fruit cake, almond. Taste has sweet-sour red & green apple, pear & raisin in a caramelly, jam-like malt body surrounded by woody red grape, bitter herbal notes and a vague savoury touch of cherry tomato. Herbal hoppy and slightly tart finish of ripe grapes, wet wood and warming sherry- and port-like alcohol. Medium body, thin oily texture, soft carbonation. Typical 'late' Struise, I suppose, a vinous late-night sipper, not even that alcoholic but just a bit too thin. Sunday, May 5, 2024

Alengrin	4 Struise Twenty Two Anniversary Ale Imperial stout produced by Struise, pioneers of global or US-style craft brewing in Belgium, for their 22nd birthday last year (brewing since 2001 indeed but reaching an audience only several years later), bottle from Drinks4U in Deinze west of Ghent. It has been quite some years since I had a new Struise beer, so I was looking forward to this one. Thick and dense, creamy, regular, mocha-beige, tiny-bubbled, membrane-lacing head sitting firmly on a pitch black beer with thin copper-red edges. Intense bouquet of toffee, caramel or coffee liqueur, raisin bread, ground hazelnuts, armagnac, cold cappuccino, bayleaf, marmite, onion jam, dried blackberries, mocha ice cream, whisky, vague hints of cinnamon, olive oil, rubber, eraser. Concentrated onset, densely sweet, candied pear, haemoglobin, espresso, blackberry coulis, medlar and candied fig, with a faint sourish undertone enhanced by softly prickling carbonation; utterly full, oily to even somewhat syrupy mouthfeel. The mouth cavity is swiftly filled with layers of toffee-, walnut paste-, bitter chocolate- and marmite-like dark malts, heavy on the tongue and 'spiced' with peppery, whisky-like alcohol as well as peppery, leafy hops, the first element much stronger than the first, burning through his unctuous, almost gum-like, smooth deep caramelliness and chocolateyness - with a prominent coffee-like roasty bitterness coming in soon and filling the rest of the palate, including even a coffee aroma that lingers retronasally. Hints of not just espresso but bayleaf, black pepper, very faint dried eucalyptus leaf, vanilla and rosemary adorn this finish further. Utterly heavy-bodied, demanding and boozy stout, actually coming quite close to what I remember from Black Albert and its pedigree in the days when Struise were actually on top of the world. Cheers to Urbain, Carlo and the rest of the crew, for still continuing this impressive operation after so many years - this beer, though a bit too intensely boozy for me (I feel a - cheap - whisky burn going down my throat with every sip), certainly conveys the audacity and power with which you rocked the Belgian brewing in a time when it could use a boost more than many other brewing countries. Typical Struise 'muscle-flexing', but I have seen birthday beers from breweries pass by with far less force and personality than this one. One to sip slowly, whilst pondering the impact Struise made on craft brewing in Belgium and abroad. Better than present-day Black Albert or Cuvée Delphine, but not as good as those two were in their heydays, which I will remember vividly for as long as I live. Happy birthday, in any case! Very mild, caramel malty, minimally doughy yeasty and fruity aroma, hints of dried fruit, raisin, plum. Taste is sweet-ish, caramel malty, fruity, minimally woody and vinous, hints of dried fruit, plum, raisin, a touch of red wine and oak; minimally warming, alcoholic finish. Gains significantly depth while warming up. Slightly oily, watery texture, smooth and soft palate, fine, soft carbonation. Very mild and homogenous - pretty decent. Sunday, April 28, 2024

huineman	4.5 Struise Black Damnation XVI - Ivan the Terrible 33 cl bottle, as Black Damnation 16, vintage 2020. A glossy jet black pour with a thick, tight, light brown head with good retention. Aroma is mainly dark dry fruits and berries: raisins, prunes, dates. There's also carob, cola jellies and molasses. Onset is sweetish, crisp and mellow. Full-bodied, powerful (even boozy), with a very bitter and very long finish. Aftertaste is espresso, smoke and cocoa shake. It will certainly age for decades (this bottle was 4 y.o. and yet clearly immature.) A fantastic winter warmer or after-dinner ale. Tuesday, April 23, 2024

Aroma is lots of red wine, port, tannins, oaky barrel character, blackberries, woody malt, cherry, liqueur chocolate, fruitcake, ripe dark fruits. Hints of nutty malt and sugary malt loaf. Lots going on. Taste- cherry, red wine, bourbon hints, oaky vanilla, earthy woody malt, nuts, fruitcake, port wine, tannins, chocolatey traces, blackcurrant and other dark fruits, sweet spicy malt and the end. RudiGR	4.4 Struise Holy Beer House Tora Tora Besteld op 18-07-2023 bij Poseidon beers en toegekomen per koerier op 26-07-2023. Thuis op 17-04-2024 mijn nieuwsgierige smaakpapillen ermee in slaap gewiegd op 17-04-2024. Tora Tora wordt gebrouwen door De Struise Brouwers uit Oost-Vleteren in hun eigen brouwerij VDACO. Struise heeft zijn naam te danken aan de plaats waar hun eerste bieren in 2001 ontwikkeld werden, een oud schuurtje op een struisvogelboerderij in Lo-Reninge. Sinds 2012 brouwen ze hun bier in een eigen pand. Deze TORA TORA is een hersenspinsel van David Rogiers van Holy Beer House die een mooi lot Belgische jenevervaten meebracht en die liet vullen met een krachtig bier: de Kill & Destroy natuurlijk, (hetzelfde bier werd gebruikt om de Kamikaze te produceren). ‘Tora Tora’ is Japans en betekent ‘verrassingseffect’. Als je dit bier proeft, begrijp je direct waarom het zo heet. TORA TORA is een helder donker-amber bier dat slechts weinig beige schuim aanmaakt in de vorm van heel wat grove bellen. Het blijft ook maar zwak aan je glaswand kleven en zakt snel in elkaar tot het helemaal weg gaat. In de bodemrand van de fles zie je nog een gistdepot. En er zijn maar weinig fijne CO2 belletjes zichtbaar. Het bier wordt wazig als je de laatste cm mee uitschenkt. HET AROMA: Zoetig, kandij, beetje karamel, alcohol. DE SMAAK: Zeer licht bitterig, zoet, alcohol en veel jenever dringen samen de neus binnen. HET MONDGEVOEL: Volle body met een romige textuur, licht bitterdroog, medium koolzuurprikkeling. DE NASMAAK: Het weinige bittere vloeit lang uit samen met een lichte jenever tint. Veel alcohol die de neus binnendringt, zoetig. HET TOTAALGEVOEL: Een complex bier. HET VERDICT: Dit overtreft de Kamikaze net niet, maar ik hou dan ook meer van Bourbon dan van Jenever. Maar zeker lekker. Veel zoetigheid maar net niet teveel. Mijn eerste bier toch waar ik de alcohol tijdens de smaak en ook in de nasmaak voel binnendringen in de neus. jybi	3.9 Struise Pannepøt - Old Monk's Ale - Pannepeut Même si les noms se ressemblent, le rendu entre une Pannepeut et une Pannepot est très différent. Et ma préférence est claire et va à la Pannepot. Le coupable : une acidité sur la Pannepeut qui casse les arômes, qui ne permet pas une plénitude et une puissance de la bière. On n'en reste pas moins sur une bière de qualité, De Struise oblige. En verre nous sommes sur un brun (80 d'EBC) quasi sans effervescence et sans mousse. Le nez est sympathique sur le raisin, le chocolat, le caramel, la figue, les fruits confits, la poire, la coriandre et le girofle avec un alcool bien présent. On est alors proche de la Pannepot. En bouche, c'est une tout autre histoire...où une petite acidité surprend. Celle-ci donne de la fraîcheur et ne fait pas du tout ressentir les 10 %, mais on perd en plénitude et en puissance. Une petite aigreur et astringence sont également présentes. Des arômes de vinaigre de framboise font également leur apparition. Mais il n'y a pas photo...je vote Pannepot ! Saturday, April 6, 2024

Pours hazy conker brown in colour with a creamy textured conker coloured head. Bourbon on the nose, but not too boozy. Surprised at how easy drinking this is, warming, a little spicy edge, and moderate dryness at the finish. Marvellous, particularly good as it slowly warms and reveals more. Thursday, April 4, 2024

Maris	3.6 Struise Black Albert From a 330ml bottle on 2/4/2024 (vintage 2020). Pours a deepest brown with virtually no head. Has a light chocolate nose with some hints of coffee. Tastes of bitter dark chocolate, caramel, licorice, dark/dry fruit and a good dash of soy. Finishes with a strong, lingering, boozy, slightly chemical tasting bitterness. The body is thinner than expected and the mouthfeel oily, with softish carbonation. With the huge rep, I was expecting something special but it's actually pretty underwhelming.
