Beer is not just a beverage, it’s a lifestyle, opening possibilities of getting to know the world through its beer. I am particularly interested in beer history and beer style diversity, geographically and technically - and I came to appreciate them all, though I do have my preferences. Being Belgian, beer style classification is a hot issue to me, since few Belgian brewers make serious attempts at limiting themselves to standardized categories - see the fact that this very site limits itself to "Belgian ale" and "Belgian strong ale" for anything Belgian that doesn’t fit the few categories that are being followed. My beer ratings are mostly based on complexity: the more complex a beer is, the higher it will generally score, unless it shows obvious brewing mistakes or if the different flavour components do not match. Over 3/5 generally means appreciation from my part. I’d welcome any thought exchanges regarding (Belgian) beer style classification, since this subject has puzzled me for years...
