COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The golden blonde Westmalle Extra is only brewed twice a year, primarily for use within the abbey. Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.

tmoreau (9895) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - APR 23, 2024
UPDATED: APR 23, 2024 Shared 11.2 oz. bottle poured to a logoed chalice at The Beer Cellar-Glen Ellyn, IL., showing a slightly hazed, light orangey/gold color, with a fluffy layer of white froth, and spots & strands of lacing. The nose was soft grain, dried fruit & citrus, followed by subtle tartness & tanginess, and floral & yeast spice hints. Medium bodied, the taste was similar notes, with lively spritz to the effervescence, continued tartness & tanginess, some fruit, skins, & rind astringency, and a dry finish. Flavorful and quite expressive for a table beer.

UM02 (657) - Quebec, CANADA - MAR 29, 2024
UPDATED: MAR 29, 2024 Bottle. Hazy golden pour. Sweet yeast and grain aroma. A bit of sharp pepper on the nose but a fairly thin bodied malt. One can taste the grain and the Belgian style yeast but it is pretty mild. Decent and easy drinking and it is only a table beer but I was still expecting something a bit more outstanding or special from a Trappist beer.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2024 11.2 oz bottle poured, from Special Brews. Bottled 11/24/22, best by same date this year. Can't believe it took this long to pour this one and try it. Cloudy but bright peachy golden pour. Patchy active fizz head. Aroma is dense with spicy, floral notes. Flavor has lots of floral and spicy character as well, with some herbal notes, and a nice cooling Belgian yeast follow. Spicy note hangs on late into the palate. Slight lemon peel. Refreshing and crisp, with a dry side. Everything about this brew is interesting. Love this.

ganache (6773) - New Jersey, USA - FEB 3, 2024
UPDATED: FEB 18, 2024 11.2 oz at a time, bottled 2022 NOV 24 and best before 2024 NOV 24. A slow gush, clear straw with a foamy bright white head. Nose of straw, dust, pale malt, momentary stale tire air, Champagne. Taste dry, sometimes soul-suckingly dry, pale/Pils malt with black pepper spice and firm, slightly hard and metallic medium hop bitterness, lemoncit. Thin body with bitterness coming through the foam, hints of apple juice, bits of straw and grape. Yeast character is relatively dominant here, and it's a good one. No alcohol but the herbal hops take some getting used to -- could see this as a great one to pair with food. My mouth feels clean afterward, and the aftertaste is pleasant and reminds of an open, perhaps planted field, maybe more of a freshly-stocked haymow. Wins at the margins, with hustle, I can see my opinion of this rising with every bottle. [2024.02.02: 3.3] Ooh, baby, my third one was properly cold and what a difference! [2024:02.18: 3.6]

Paulaner.dk (125) - Silkeborg, DENMARK - JAN 22, 2024
