The golden blonde Westmalle Extra is only brewed twice a year, primarily for use within the abbey. Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.

Uiterlijk: Goudgeel, volle witte schuimkraag. Geur: Mout, hop, hooi.

GoufCustom (2672) - HONG KONG - MAR 27, 2018

330ml bottle bought at HKBWEX in Mong Kok.

Looks: Translucent golden yellow with a ring of dirt-like yeast sediments; One and a quarter finger head with crumpety white foam which lasts for 3 minutes; Very good sticky lacing with fizzy carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant Pils malt, with strong apricots, dark fruits, light perfume, bubblegum, light orange peels, floral, sugar, strong woody spices, dough, Bel yeast, lemon and grass.

Taste: Close to light sweet Pils malt, with orange peels, floral, light sugar, strong woody spices, dough, Bel yeast, lemon, strong Bitter grassy hops.

Body: Mid to full body. Slick and smooth palate.

Mouth Feel: Good Pils maltyness in a solid, slightly creamy background. Notable spicy orange peels dominates but otherwise plain tasting. Flowery with light sweetness, woody spicy with doughty yeast ended with lemon. Pretty good!

Hoppiness: orange peels, floral, strong woody spices, lemon and grass in nose and taste; Bitterness is initially strong but petered out for an abrupt, mid astringent bitter-sweet Pils malty finish.

After Taste: Quite dry. Spicy doughty and quite bitter to mouth. All the goodness went to the nice fruity estery aroma, but taste-wise is far less impressive, with doughty malt and spice filled up the void. Competent enough but not as good as Chimay Dorée. Still worth a try, though.
