Tyranena Shaggin’ In the Highlands
12oz bottle from Discount in Waukesha. Brownish tan pour, no head. Even a lot of spinning did not create a head. Aroma is very plastic-y, with some scotchy peat and some iodine. Little positive in this ... Taste is of sweet malts, some smokiness, some peat and some alcohol. Medium bodied, with alcohol. The blend is decent - shrug? - for what this is, it is not badly blended. There is almost no carbonation. Finishes sweetly. This is not in a direction of a brew I am interested in. Maybe my first "less than 10" 8

Tyranena BGW Socialite - Imperial Brown aged in Red Wine Barrels
The third of the three barrel-aged browns that I’ve found from Tyranena in recent months, Socialite is another adventure in taste alongside Island Booty and High Class Broad. Both the oak barrel and red wine influence and significantly lighten the normally hearty Tyranena brown ale. The most distinctive and appealing aspect is the long finish that eventually turns a little dry. Enjoyed tonight from a bottle dated 30JUN16.

Tyranena Imperial IPA with Pineapple and Mango
On tap at the Malt Shoppe in Tosa. Darker than amber pour. Of white head, spotty lace. Fruity malty, less malt in the nose, not seeing specifics of either fruit. Thick. Not quite syrupy but close. Finishes sweet and fruity tangy. Shrug, tasty but a bit muddled. Not clean enough to be good. 13.5

Tyranena Imperial IPA with Pineapple and Mango
Light amber color with a smaller lid of ecru bubbles. Sweeter scents with citric hops and a bit of resin and wood. Sweet start. Middle has mild fruit and enough bitterness to balance. The fruit doesn’t seem to mingle that well. It seems to have lost it freshness.

Tyranena Rocky’s Revenge Bourbon Brown
On tap at Quaker Steak. Cloudy brown pour with an off white head. Taste and aroma of caramel, brown sugar and light bourbon. An okay brown but it feels a little to reserved. The flavors are there but not very pronounced.

Deep brown. Rum, nutty coconut, and cocoa. Flavor is mildly sweet, fruit rum with light nutty coconut and chocolate. Kind of like a light German chocolate cake-type beer.

Murky brown. Thick peat, vinyl and toasted caramel malt. Heavy salty peat, light ashy smoke, vinyl, and somewhere in there, a beer. I guess I am on the other end of the spectrum.

Tyranena Rocky’s Revenge Bourbon Brown
Aromas of wet leaves, brown sugar, and bourbon. Taste is brown sugar, caramel, faint bourbon, wet leaves, and cocoa. Bourbon is subdued, but present in the back of the tongue; I wish it was more pronounced. This is a good brown though.

Tyranena Shaggin’ In the Highlands
Dark copper to umber in color. small lid of creamy, light taupe bubbles. Pure aromas of scotch with some caramel tones of Irish whisky. Mild peat and iodine. Damn, this is a scotch drinkers brew!!! I could sniff this one all night. A bias aroma score, but if you like scotch, find ye this brew! A smoke infused caramel in the start. Mild peat, oak and iodine again work their way in. Caramel along with some cherry flavors wander about in a Manhattan cocktail sort of way. A beer and scotch lovers nirvana nippitatum nectar.

Tyranena BGW Carnal Knowledge Double Oatmeal Stout
Opaque, dark brown liquid with a smaller lid of tan bubbles. Pure stout scents, nothing overpowering, Dark toasted to roasted malt, Hints of dark fruit, mild tobacco, and every so slight ash. Thin sheet of lace. Feel is full and lightly oily. Sweet start which follows though into the finish. Lip smacking. Mostly light roasted malt and mild mocha. Bits of fruit, blackberries, in the finish as well. Linger is drier, with a touch of black malt acidity. Solid strong sweet stout.

Wonderful bourbon notes with a smooth vanilla overtone. There is a nice ever so light grassy hop finish. Quaffable is the only word needed here.

Tyranena Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale
Bottled on 19 Nov 2015. Brown toast malt smell under the nose. Just a tiny bit of Scotch peat. But the peaty note does get stronger as the beer spreads out in the glass. Hazy brown body with lots of floaties in it. Taste has plenty of malt, just a little smoke, and warming alcohol. No phenol found, this beer has aged very well, but is gladly enjoyed right now.

Tyranena BGW Coco Poco
12oz bottle from Discount in Waukesha. Served colder than cellar temp. Almost black pour with a beige head. Coconut, sweet malts, some chocolate and some cane sugar in the nose. Taste is of the great Tyranena sweet malts, chocolate, caramel, some tangy nut. Fuller than medium bodied. The blend is solid. Some alcohol presence. Finishes sweeter than bittersweet. Again a solid example of what Tyranena does well. 14.2

Pours tar black with a thick fluffy head. Nose is molasses , chocolate, and cream of coconut. Taste comes forward as a proprietary Porter and then sweet coconut attacks on the finish. Very pleasant and tasty. It reminds me Puerto Rican Coquito. Rum notes are not very prominent tho. Definitely will drink again.

Tyranena BGW Coco Poco
Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Star Liquors in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with an average sized beige head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of toasted coconuts, chocolate malt, a hint of oak and some sweet black strap molasses rum. Taste is full bodied, sweet as sin with flavors of multi-dark malt, plenty of chocolate malt, rum and vanilla. Finish is semi-sweet with some lingering rum and chocolate aftertaste. More coconut detected in aroma than in flavor, but definitely a decent winter sipper.

12 oz bottle. Beer is black with a thick light brown head. Some lacing. Aroma is mostly sweet dough with caramel and cola. Mild chocolate, molasses. Mild barrel. Sweet vanilla and fruit from the rum. Mild coconut, it’s there but the beer could really use more. Very pleasant porter flavors in the taste with some additional sweet complexity. Nice soft mouthfeel. A little more oak in the finish cleans up the sweetness. It’s a nice beer, but the flavors are somewhat muddled. A little too much cola and not enough coconut and chocolate. The formula would probably work better in a stronger beer.

Aroma of sweet caramel toffee, a hint of agave syrup, blood oranges, golden grain malt, and some floral hops. Taste is full bodied, flavors of golden grain malt, agave syrup, orange zest and a touch toffee. Finish is quite sweet, secondary flavors of golden grain malt, agave syrup, oranges, and a touch of cherry. Any cherry presence comes out later in the finish.

Dark brown with hint of orange through the light. Smaller beige head of small bubbles. Light brown sugar and oaken whiskey aromas. Thiker oily feel. Howler from the source. Golden orange pour, white head leaving spots of lace. Aroma has sweet fruits, citrus and pine, other stone fruits, and light nut. Taste is of tangy fruit, sweet fruits, oranges, Tangerine, sticky pine. Medium bodied with fairly constant carbonation. The blend is quite good and there is some alcohol presence. Finishes slightly more sweet tangy fruity than bittersweet. This is interesting; lots of tangy sticky with a bunch of citrus. 14.2

Tyranena BGW Sailors Take Warning!
12oz bottle from Flannery’s in Oconomowoc. Reddish amber pour with almost no head. Aroma has cherries, other berries, light agave and light sweet malts. Taste is of sweet cherries, some agave, some other berry, some tangy fruit and some sweet toffee. Medium bodied which is both lighter and heavier than expected. A touch of alcohol involved. The blend is solid and the carbonation is soft. Finishes sweetly tangy with some kick on the very end. Interesting, one of a kind, brew. The base is quite non-existent, but that is fine. What shows through is sweet, tangy and fairly tasty. 13.8

Tyranena BGW Blueberry Thrill Imperial IPA
Bottle - Pours amber with a bit of ruby tint and TONS of floaties. Not appetizing in an IPA, but whatevs. Nose is pine and sharp booze a bunch of bready malt. Not a blueberry to be found. Taste is where it comes out--a bit of berry sweetness with dry breadiness, pine hops, and a sharp boozy bitterness. Slick and thin with medium carbonation. Too sharp, not tropical like it was billed, and the blueberry--yeah, not there. Disappointing.

Tyranena Rocky’s Revenge Bourbon Brown
Poured this ale from the bottle into a standard pint glass. The pour produced a hazy, dark amber body topped with a thick head of beige foam, with good retention. A nutty, sweet aroma, which promises the sweet maltiness of the brew itself. A full mouthfeel with a slight metallic finish (though it could be hops asserting itself at the end.), with some alcohol notes at the end. I’m finding the hops to be a little more assertive than what I would like, especially since the malts in the front give the promise of sweetness. I think there is some complexity here, where you have a bait and switch going on with the malts and hops, promising a sweeter profile then popping with with the bitterness of the hops. Also, having a portion aged in barrels gives me the impression that I should be getting some notes of wood in the aroma, which I really didn’t pick up (perhaps it was too cold).

Bottle - Golden amber pour with a thin off-white head. Nose is sweet, with sugary tequila, a little bit of lime, and subtle citrus notes. Pretty malty and sweet. Taste is more tequila with some oaky barrel, some more citrus mixed in, and really no cherry to be found. It isn’t as good as the description states, but it’s a sweet golden malty beer with a lovely tequila barrel note. The tequila barrel beers I’ve all tried have been a mess, so this was a nice surprise. Still--not my jam.

Bottle - Pours black with next to no head. Nose is pretty boozy as it warms. There’s no hiding the barrel heat, but it’s just the right amount. I get a bit of maple in the taste--it helps that I know it’s in the beer. It’s not in-your-face like Mornin’ Delight, but just kind of lingers throughout. Let it warm--it’s not much there when the beer is cold. Other than that it’s just Tyranena’s classic big ass imperial porter and dialed-in bourbon barrel aging. This style of beer isn’t even my jam anymore, but man, these guys do it well. I’ll be drinking the 4-pack and enjoying it!
