Tyranena BGW Hop Whore Imperial India Pale Ale
From Jun 2008 I got this bottle from joe1510. Thanks Joe! It pours a hazy amber with a 1 finger head of foam. The smell has big nose of piney hops but it's almost matched by the caramel malt. I wonder if it will be as balanced tastewise. First sip reveals the answer. Yep, or just about there. The malty sweetness actually takes center stage but gives way to a nice pine hop flavour that works very well with the malt and gives a good no, very good balance. Ok, so forget about my comment about it being "about there". ;^) Nice medium thick mouthfeel and the carbonation is lightly done. The finish is where the pine really shines and I'm not usually that big a fan of pine hop flavour! That's a testament to Tyranena's brewing skills. I can't really say that I detect the alcohol(whatever abv% it may be) at all so I'll have to say that the drinkabilty is *very* good. A brief return to the appearance...the foam shrinkage during the session is very minimal and there's a ring around my glass after every sip. Cool! I see that this beer is retired but I'm hoping that there's enough still left on the shelves for fellow BAs to find some. IMHO, this is one hell of a DIPA!!

Tyranena BGW Dirty Old Man
Bottle. pours opaque black with a small creamy tan head that dissipates slowly with good lacing. Aroma is not overly pleasant, woody and roasty, molasses and char. Flavor is light plus sweet and light plus bitter. Not well integrated, raw. Medium body, soft mouthfeel. This was a pretty big disappointment given the ratings and my general appreciation of Rye BA beers.

Tyranena BGW Carnal Knowledge Double Oatmeal Stout
12floz bottle, no date, $3 single, pint glass. Appears a very dark-brown with light film of froth. Smells decent, kinda like cocoa puffs in milk. Lactic tasting of semi-sweet chocolate and oatmeal cookie. Slick, oily feeling leaves much to desire, which is much like everything else in this beer. It's not bad, but not up to most others in its class.

Howler from the source. Tyranena's standard "darker amber than ipa" pour. Oranges, other citrus, some chewy resin and sweet malts. Medium bodied. Blend is good. Finishes tangy bittersweet without the 100 IBUs really showing a ton. Nice solid & tasty. 13.8

Tyranena Imperial Saison - Port Wine Barrel Aged
Sampled from the tap at GTMW 2017. Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grains, flora and a strong sweet port notes supporting. Flavor has sweet grains, flora and some herbal notes with a bit of port backing.

Tyranena BGW Steve Doesn't Use a Rear View Mirror Mango IPA
Aroma is fruit, a bit like a red wine. Smells sweet. Golden clear light amber, lightly carbonated, creamy off-white head fades at a moderate pace to a bubbly cap, leaving thick lacing, especially if you tip the glass. Thick mouth feel. Initial taste is muted fruit, not sweet. Then fairly strong bitterness asserts in the middle and into the finish and aftertaste. As the beer warms, and as you continue to drink, the bitterness grows and grows in the mouth. In the end, very bitter indeed, overwhelming the mango taste.

Tyranena BGW Carnal Knowledge in the Morn
12oz bottle from Discount in Waukesha. Served cooler than cellar temperature. Very dark brown pour with a beige head leaving little spotty lace. Aroma has big chocolate and roast, with a whole bunch of barrel. Roastier down through the glass. Taste is of sweet malts, chocolate, heavy roast and bourbon. The bourbon overwhelms down through the glass. Somewhat rough yet, and aging will improve that, so will need to find another bottle. More than medium bodied, although - as in the base brew - not too deep or thick for style. The blend is good, although not to the promise of the nose, unfortunately. The coffee needs to balance better with the barrel. Finishes barrel sweet with done bitter balance. The Tyranena barrel program comes through again! 15.1

Taste of the same with more mango and a bit of alcohol on the back end. This full bodied brew is well balanced and even though I am not a fan of mango this brew still rocks.

On tap at Three Cellars in the Falls. Wow! Lovely peach/grape blend with a big oak presence. Tropical fruits. Deep and solid. Taste follows. Maybe some Belgian tangy yeast. But otherwise straight as the nose is. Lovely oak. Light to medium bodied and, really quite good. Blend is solid. Tangy fruity finish with the length and depth of the oak. Excellent saison! 14.7

Aroma is sweetly fruity but significantly subdued for an IPA tipping out at 100 on the Stimpmeter (or is that used for golf, I forget) but the bitterness definitely catches up on the taste, increasingly so as the finish lengthens.

Tyranena BGW Carnal Knowledge Double Oatmeal Stout
12 ounce bottle
It has been a while since the last time I tried a new BGW release. When the weather cooled it was time to pull this out of the cellar and work on the backlog. Hopefully I won’t have to wait this long again to get a couple more.

Aroma / Appearance - The oily black base pours like a mild mannered imperial stout with a bit of water for viscosity. Bleached chestnut foam surfs on the surface. Chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, coffee, and a rich maltiness permeate the air.

Flavor / Palate - Raisins, chocolate chips, and coffee enrich the tongue. Truffles melt away into a rich bitter finish. The naunces might not be as strong as other imperial stouts but gets the job done. This is a gateway to bigger stronger double digit ABV releases.
