Bull Falls Hop Worthy IPA
Tallboy can from Flanagans Appleton. Hazy orange, moderate foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of candied citrus and caramel malt. The taste is grapefruit, orange, caramel. Very old school. A little tinny. Medium bodied, mild lingering bitterness. Meh.

Base Stout was good here however the whiskey flavor comes through as purely charred wood with no finesse to it whatsoever. Nice color but missing out on the bottom line. This one wasnít for me.

Bull Falls Holzhacker Lager
Can at home. Gift from a mate. Sweet but sour apple juice aroma. Medium gold. Virtually no head. Surprisingly bitter when first sampled (although this tones down) , however lurking underneath is a chemical sweetness which I am not entirely keen on. Light. Watery. Soft carbonation. Some crispness in the lead up to the finish. Average lager.

Bull Falls Hop Worthy IPA
Can at home. A gift from a mate who got a Bulls Fall box from relatives. Pours a good white head, which doesnít last. Sugary sweet sap aroma, with a pinch of pepper coming through. Some sweetness at first before a a real bitterness overwhelms it all in the finish. Light - to medium bodied. The carbonation becomes prominent in the overly astringent finish. Didnít realise I was getting a sore throat until this gave me a burning feeling. Unbalanced - overly sweet, then overly bitter. Iím finishing it but itís not overly enjoyable.

Bull Falls Holzhacker Lager
Bright saturated gold, compact sturdy layer of foam that sits for a few minutes, and leaves behind arcs of lace. Aroma is mellow and clean, light apple yeast esters, vaguely biscuity and grassy. Taste is similarly mellow and unfettered, simple biscuity malt flavors mix with apple esters, and a crisp grassy bitterness from the Hallertau. Light and crisp, very smooth and clean with a lingering grassy noble hop bitterness in the dry finish. Minimal sweetness, and far from cloying. Easy drinking, true to style, and versatile with food. No one is reinventing the wheel here, itís just a clean, well made German lager. Simplicity is underrated and sadly often misunderstood... simple traditional beers can be extremely satisfying. Zero diacetyl, likely a contaminated draft line in the review below.

Bull Falls Marathon Superfine Old Lager
16 ounce can from the Eagle River, WI Trigís, consumed cold sometime over July 29th-31st. Several of them, actually. I did drink one of them, or at least part of one, out of a glass, and it poured a reasonable straw-gold color with a bit of lasting snowy head...nose is grainy, certainly corn is evident in the sweetness, but itís not overpowering, and thereís a freshness to it and, dare I say, perhaps a hint of resinous hops in there somewhere...pretty solid pale malt character in the body, again just a hint of hops which lets ya know youíre not drinking some macro pretender, this really is "premium" lager with a richer and fuller mouthfeel and just more general heft than youíd get from those older brewers using the watered-down versions of those 60-year-old recipes. This is pretty close to the real deal, which doesnít mean itís awesome or anything, but merely solid and eminently drinkable and unflawed. I donít think Bull Falls is currently available in the southern part of the state, which is a shame, but Iíll look for them next year when I head to the north woods again.

Bull Falls Bock
16 ounce can from Trigís in Wausau, drunk sometime between July 29th and 31st at my family reunion in Three Lakes, WI, from the can. OK I poured a little bit in my hand to make sure that it was, indeed, "bock colored". At least I think I did. I donít know, between the heat and running around after my nieces to make sure they didnít drown and trying to find a tiny bit of alone time the family reunion is already a bit of a blur, and I didnít take reliable notes on any of the many beers I tried. But these Bull Falls samples really did stand out, mostly because they were a lot better than I expected. This had a lovely - very typical - caramelized malt nose, maybe some brown sugar and smoke, even through the hole in the can...it was nicely balanced between those sweet malts and a little bit of burnt/charred bitterness, though certainly slanted more to the sweet side...carbonation level low but reasonable...perhaps just a bit on the thin side, but overall a solid bock and easy to drink outdoors in the summer heat.

Bull Falls Oatmeal Stout
16 ounce can from Trigís in Eagle River, WI, consumed at about cellar temp from a plastic cup in a motel room in Escanaba, MI. Nearly opaque cola color with a fair bit of tan head, almost fully diminishing...nose is roasty-toasty with a bit of cigarette and hardwood smoke/ash, a fair amount of burnt coffee, perhaps a hint of chocolate...on the palate itís sweet, very smooth, carbonation somewhat on the low side, a bit of chocolate and vanilla, and a dry herbal character towards the finish. Could be fuller, but with the drier-than-normal finish, I find this a pretty easy-drinking an enjoyable example of a style that is not one of my favorites.

16 ounce can from a grocery store probably not worth noting here on Ratebeer, here in Wausau WI. Pours a moderate-medium-sized head, lasts for a bit, topping a hazy golden body...on the nose, very typical hefe aroma, banana-clove, yadda-yadda, but also a bit if vanilla and I have to say all well blended and fairly deep and strong...a bit tarter than the average example, perhaps, plenty of wheat-sourdough character, quite soft mouthfeel, long lightly sour finish but also a more than adequate bit of fruity sweetness...I canít say this really stands out, but itís a more than credible example of the style without any flaws, and very enjoyable.

Bull Falls Five Star Ale
Draught pint at City Grill in Wausau, WI. Pours medium to dark amber with just a bit of foam...fairly uninteresting malty-biscuit aroma, bit of caramel, not a lot going on...is this an amber ale? I wasnít looking it up here while I was drinking it, and there was no description on the menu, seems amber-ale to me, little hop presence, biscuit malts, unfortunately a bit of cardboard character towards the finish...ehh, I really canít come up with much here. Drinkable, not that much wrong besides that cardboard (which mostly disappeared as it warmed) , but nothing much to take home either.

Poured with a nice sized foamy head, but that quickly settled leaving no sign or lace. Aroma is soap and traditional Bavarian Hefe. Flavorís the best part here and it has some of that traditional Bavarian Hefe qualities, but is missing some need carbonic tang as the carbonation is a bit soft. Not a bad beer.

Can - Cola color with ruby highlights. Nose is sweet with a little raisin and medium toasted sweet bread. A little bit of roast and nuttiness. Taste is the same with a little less roast and nuttiness. Itís mellow and bready, with a touch of bitterness and herbal hopping on the finish. Pretty solid...one of the better Bull Falls Iíve had.

Can - Pours like a hazy cola. Nose is toasted dark bread and metal, light herbal hops, and a bit of nuttiness. That nuttiness manifests itself in some peanut butter notes in the taste, along with the toasted dark bread. Itís a little sweet, pretty smooth, but a limp approximation of what I want from a Schwarzbier. Take out the nuttiness and this could be something.

Bull Falls Holzhacker Lager
4-pack of 16 oz. cans for $7.69 from Woodmanīs Market in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Pours a quite hazy yellow with white foam and good carbonation. The aroma is slightly metallic, probably from the can or maybe from the age of the beer. The cans are stamped on the bottom, but cannot be deciphered by the consumer. The taste is light and sweet with little hop presence, but quite a bit of caramel sweetness. This tastes like they used a cheap base malt because it lacks depth and body. The alcohol content is too high for a Munich Helles. This tastes very much like a typical American microbrewed lager beer despite its German name. Decent enough, but I can get a four pack of 16.9 oz. cans of KŲnig Pilsener for $3.99, Pilsner Urquell for $6.99 and Carlsberg for $4.69. A marginal quality pseudo German beer at this price?

Pours an opaque brown color with khaki colored head. Soft nose on this, but there is definitely barrel character, oak, vanilla, whiskey, along with the usual chocolate of and oatmeal stout; follows onto the palate. 16 oz. can purchased in Barron, Wisconsin. Pours a cloudy amber with an off-white head with good foam retention. The aroma is of yeast and sweet malt. The flavor is also very sweet with low bitterness. The website says that it has 15.2 IBUīs which is way too low. Not bad and drinkable enough but not great and somewhat thin tasting despite the amber color. I am willing to bet that they are using cheap Canadian grown barley malt to make this. You will not create authentic German beers using cheap barley malt. Spend a little more any buy some Durst/Weyermann/Schill base malts and you will produce a German beer. There is nothing German about this except the Bavarian blue and white colors on the can. Once again, all show and no substance.
