48 Based on visits to the Reading, Stafford and Hugh Wycombe branches, it's pretty much the same as B&M but slightly more downmarket - ie a budget "everything" shop selling everything from packaged food to home & gardenware, toys, pet products, cleaning and DIY products and so on. Prices initially seem cheap, but often this is either at the expense of either quality or portion size so you do have to be a bit choosy. Beerwise, smaller branches (such as the Stafford one) seem to predominantly stock Home Bargains own brand stuff (which count as Merseyside rates, which is good for me!). Note that their own brand brews are often disguised as fake brewery names such as Off Axis or Glen Cannich. Larger branches also occasionally get in one-off batches of some rarely seen (albeit not necessarily high quality) breweries - on my recent visits to the Wycombe and Reading stores there were several US breweries stocked that were new to me, such as Cruz Blanca, Paradox and Upslope. Overall then it's definitely not a beer destination, but it's maybe better than other budget stores on the beer front. If you're passing a larger one and have a bit of time to spare it's probably worth popping in - if you're lucky you may get some new brewery ticks at very reasonable prices. |
40 Generally awful, but you can occasionally find something odd and interesting. |
36 The home of cheap ticks. Generally an awful standard of beverage. Even so i'll reluctantly admit there is occasionally something interesting |
52 They seem to have at least a couple of untried cheap beers or ciders I've not seen elsewhere when I visit every few months. Managed to get my first Russian beer (Baltika) from here. They now even have their own beer range in cans. Quality of beer is mostly poor to average with the odd exception.
Worth a try if you are near and are looking for something new and cheap. Good fast checkouts as well so saves having to hang around or faff about with self service like some supermarkets are forcing you down. |
58 They usually have a weird and wonderful tick for me. No special beers but goof for ticking fodder |
36 Always a random selection of beer mainly euro larger and real ale bottles. Occasionally a nice find. |
44 This cheap supermarket chain has some larger stores that sometimes surprises, the smaller ones not so often. Usually just your 'run of the mill' offerings, but I've also found some 'odd beers' too. Normally pop into our local one (newly refurbished and large) in hope more than expectation. Found a Bomonti Fabrika (Turkish) in there yesterday, 22nd Oct 2020. |
46 Rather a random store to find beers in but there is sometimes new beers to be had. Pretty unpredictable in what they will be carrying but if you have found yourself dragged into one then a few winners raises the morale. |
40 You can’t beat home bargains for a random trawl I’ve had some shockers ( snowman revenge Bobby dazzler) the obscure hard to find American state Russian beer and lots in between worth going just on the off chance cheaper than the supermarket. Always worth it on the off chance |
