He might be a failure....time will tell....but remember that Bama tried to hire him 3 different times and USC at least once so some heavyweights think he can coach. If rumors are true that they also have a shot still to bring Frost in as OC/coach in waiting there might be more to this. Did the Bama recruiting happen because he’s that damn good or because he has Bama roots and was alright? Plus USC did hire Kiffin so their questionable.... Bama roots certainly didn’t hurt, but the last time when they hired dude from Washington State (after Shula and Dubose) they didn’t care anymore about that....he is just highly thought of in the coaching circles. I think he will be a good hire, I’m more shocked he decided to do this now so late in his career. Rumor was he badly wanted to come to Bama but his wife didn’t want to leave the west coast. He will be pretty much polar opposite of Pellini. Much more polished.
